How long did you ride it for/why are you no longer riding it?

1983 or 1984 Yamaha 400 Maxim.

None at all.

Rode it for two years, including two cross-Canada trips, before trading it for a 750-Four.

Was a great first bike. Reliable. Plenty of power but not so much you'd be inadvertently spinning the rear wheel too easily, comfy for long distances, easy to work on. A good bike to learn on.

First bike was a 67/68? Yamaha "Twin Jet" 100cc. That was a typical bike for the time and I could afford it.

I had previously frequently ridden a bicycle and once rode a friends basket case 2 stroke though a fence.

I burned my poor little bike out.

It was great because it was my first taste of freedom. It was cheap and could go anywhere.

What was your first street bike? 2004 Suzuki Gs500F

How much riding experience did you have before acquiring that bike? Almost none besides the M2 Course

How long did you ride it for/why are you no longer riding it? Rode it for 1 season I sold it and upgraded to a zx6r cause I like green and love the handling and power of the new bike, I still loved my first bike it was great to learn on I would have kept it if I could keep 2

Great first bike for learning very light and agile, upright position great gas mileage

I'm almost all the same as above, but I went with a Street Triple R rather than a zx6r.

Started on a 2006 gsf500 rode it for 3 months then bought a 05 sv650S still riding and great street bike. Have a 03 gsxr600 for the track

I started on an 82 Gpz 550. Had 3 of em 1 for street, 1 for racing and one for extra parts.

Just dirt bike experience before I got that bike.. had them for about 4 yrs before I moved up.. All 3 engines had over 75K Km on them, great bikes, great engines. They handled pretty good for the day too.

1982 honda twinstar

First Street Legal bike, was a 1980 Suzuki TS185 at the age of 16. I had been riding for a few years, starting on a Honda Trail 70, then a Suzuki DS100, followed by a DS185, the TS185 was the same bike with Blinkers and a different color. this is a 1980 TS 100 I bought a few years ago with 394 original factory miles on it.

Now in a proper storage place

Still on my first bike, 2005 R6. Put about 20k on it since I got it. I had 0 experience with motorcycles when I took the MSF course, bought the bike 2 weeks later. Definitely not a beginners bike. There were a couple butt clenching moments during the summer, and it is very easy to get carried away and not notice how fast you're going. Been down twice (both at low speeds)

First bike: 1987 Kawasaki GPZ 305, bought used in 1996.

No experience of any kind. It actually sat in my parent's driveway for a couple weeks before my buddy could teach me how to drive it.

I rode it for a year and a half, eventually moving to a 1998 Suzuki Katana 600. Paid $1000 for it & sold it for $1500 lol.

It's whopping 16 bhp and top speed of 125 kph made for a good learning tool but riding 2-up was a test in patience. I beat the hell out of it, did little maintenance and made $500 on it so I'd have to say it was a decent starter bike.

Not my pic but this is the exact bike I had:

Fall of 2010 I bought a 2010 Suzuki GS500F.

How much riding experience did you have before acquiring that bike?
Only the RTI course.

How long did you ride it for/why are you no longer riding it?
I still have it and love it. I also have a GSXR 600 I plan on putting on the road this year.

Do you feel it was a good first bike? Please explain.
It was an awesome first bike. Not much torque, so it wasn't scary. More than enough power for the highway. Super cheap so mistakes with this bike such as not checking your oil and killing an engine, wasn't such a big deal:)

P.S. This is a really great thread, it should be sticky'd into the New Riders-Start Here section.

^ Agreed about all of it.

2006 GS500F

How much riding experience did you have before acquiring that bike?
2 days of M1 exit at Humber

How long did you ride it for/why are you no longer riding it?
About one full season. Looking for something more sporty.

Do you feel it was a good first bike? Please explain.
Great bike. Enough power that you don't feel you're on a beginner bike, not enough to get you into trouble. Simple, reliable, and about 30 years worth of second hand parts kicking around. Great for learning to ride and wrench.

-2007 Yamaha R6.

-Lived in Asia for 6 months, drove a Honda Wave 125cc or 150cc (cant remember exact) + Gearing up-Conestoga riders course. M1 exit.

-About 2 weeks/Got it in September 2013. Didn't insure it and put it away for the year.

-Nope, not at all. I knew I should have gotten a fz6r or even a 250 as my first official street bike. R6 is a bit intimidating to me still, it's not a comfy bike, half hour of riding and you get all sorts of cramps. But I got it mainly because it was a good deal from a friend.
This year will be my first full season.
