what r u paying for weed these days ?

I
In a past life I would take small clip on flowers and attached them to various points along the upper growth to resemble flowers. This seemed to confuse nosy neighbours. There's not much you can do about smell outdoors in my experience - that's too dependent on strain type, air flow amount, air flow direction and so on. As growers we may be limited by choosing the best spot due to our need for maximizing sunlight, or ease of access, etc, so I would first try to go with less pungent varieties if possible.

Personally Mike, I don't want big plants anymore. It used to be fun for my ego, but it's too much work to harvest, too much waste, too much resources, and I can't even give it away I have so much. I also go for strains with shorter flowering periods. Last year I gave away all the healthy plants and kept the stunted runts. With successive pinching they were all way smaller than my 2020 crop, when the plants were just too big. I'm ideally looking for plants that yield around 1/4lb, not well over 1lb. I personally don't have a use for autoflowering varieties, but I get why many people would.

Lastly, smaller plants grown in pots allow me to move them into the garage if needed during early and sporadic frosts.
I think the 12 footers were an ego thing too, it was funny to see people stop their cars to photograph 'the beast' last year. Pots might be the best way to limit size, I've noticed the ones I did in pots stopped growing around 4'.

I too give all of my stuff away, not my first choice for recreational inebriation. Like my flower gardens I get a kick out of growing really big stuff, I normally grow a few large annuals: castor beans, brugmansias, and last year I started growing bananas and big dahlias. Last year I got a real crop of passion fruit, I heard they will survive winter outside so I planted a couple in the garden last spring -- well see.

Mine ended up around 3-4ft outside which was a good size for me, as it was easily portable. Had some good help with the growing and I’ve still yet to try it.

The smell was annoying the MIL so I’d move it from the max sunlight area off to the far part of the backyard at night so it wouldn’t annoy her as much.

She’s old school so weed is bad in every sense of the word. But did promise to make me brownies from it.

I’ll try again this year, but I don’t have grow lights at all and not sure what to get so may just leave it be.

How did you get them to grow sideways??

I also tend do pots these days. Trees in the yard have grown over the years so not as much direct sun on the yard. I can move the pots to chase the sun and move them to a corner if I have a backyard get together.

It’s mostly just something to do for me, kinda the same as the vegetable garden.

I’m probably going to do some moving of perimeter plants and garden this year so the garden gets more light. Maybe I’ll put one of the girls in the ground and see how she does.

Have I missed the boat for this year to start growing in the house? I bought one of those small grow lights and a fan as last year was a disaster for the first batch...may be too late.

Tried out the stuff I grew sideways above...very nice.

I started with seeds on March 2.

It’s not too late you just might want a couple extra plants to compensate depending on your yield desires

I don't think there's an advantages to starting early. Every year we get a couple of plants pop up out of nowhere (possibly reseeding themselves?) -- they finish the same size, same time as the plants started indoors in March.

How do you do that? Isn't the limit four? Is it four per address or four per adult and he can plant 12?

EDIT:
Obviously he can easily physically plant more. I have no idea how finicky police are being with exceedances. I sure as hell wouldn't risk my future employment and travel by exceeding a limit.

Technically (and taken from): Cannabis laws

You may grow up to four cannabis plants per residence (not per person) if:
  • you are 19 years of age and older
  • it is only for your personal use
  • the starting material was purchased from the Ontario Cannabis Store or an authorized retail store
  • it is not forbidden by your lease agreement or condo rules
I still have some leftover from 2020 and lots from 2021, so doubt I'll grow any more this year. Plus we got a puppy who loves to eat plants, so I think my garden will be really low key and low maintenance this year.

Definitely not too late to start plants now, especially if it's just for moderate personal consumption.

Where I live (city of Markham), you might get a ticket and lose 1 plant if you are caught growing 5 plants - that's a city thing. They only come at the request of a citizen's complaint -- sometimes a problem late in the season when the plants start perfuming the neighborhood or there's a spat between neighbors.

At plant 6 you're risking being considered a grow-op, however, I don't think people are charged unless there's serious evidence you're growing for money.

The rules are clear the limit is 4 per residence and the responsible grower must be at least 19. It's definitely not4 per person. For further clarity, here are some examples my friendly narco cop neighbour explained to me:
  • Single-family dwelling: 4 plants no matter how many residents.
  • Single-family dwelling with a legal second suite: 4 plants for the main suite, 4 for each legal suite. All units must be occupied by different residents. Rooming House: 4 plants no matter how many residents
  • Single-family dwelling and a cottage: 4 plants at each place no matter how many residents.

What kind of hours of light does the seedling need? I’ve got this grow light and a timer so can just set it.

For light, you are typically looking at around 18 hours of light. This will somewhat mimic the natural daylight patterns that plants would typically get if they were germinating outside.

This is a pretty simple read on germinating seedlings with a bunch of other relevant info to help.

I’ve always just put seedlings under 24 hr light. If you’re getting real technical a metal halide bulb is best for vegetative growth in my experience but fluorescent and LED have very broad spectrums that work well too

They NEED 16-18hrs, depending on the strain. If the strain came from near the equator it wants18hrs, further from the equator less.
...but you'll hit diminished returns with more than 18 hrs.

In Alderville every place is selling $75/oz, with twofer deals all the time.
I got an email from an online guy: $69/oz and a free 1/8th, $14 overnight shipping
... growing is a hassle at those prices.

I don't know about that. My cost to grow 4lbs was $275 in 2020. Last year I made my own soil blend and also grew runty little plants and still ended up with 1lb for the same cost.

It's hard to beat those prices for the casual consumer, who can't be bothered to grow, especially if you like the strains. Personally, I'd prefer to grow it because I want to know how it was grown and I'd rather do it myself and I think my personal stuff is smoother ans tastier than I would buy elsewhere.

Similarly, it's cheaper for me to buy tomatoes, but I'd rather grow them myself.

Same here, except my cost is zero. I do zero to the ground, zero fertilizer, and a make my own seeds by hand pollinating a few buds. I do spend a little time pruning.

This year I'm not starting under lights, just tossing a few seeds in the garden. Hopefully the late start will keep this year's girls under 10' tall.

Folks, cannabis plants are called weed for a reason. They are as easy to grow as dandelions and need the same basic care.

... unless, of course, you want GOOD weed.
I like strains that come from around the equator, that have LONG flowering periods.
I used to grow a Durban hybrid with a 15 week flowering period. You can't do that outside. We tried.
In the late '80s we were getting $400/oz for that ****.
Nobody grows it anymore, we should have kept it going. i know people that WILL grow it NOW.
When I was growing dope, it was all about quality.
Now it is all about quantity, and sadly, it shows.
