I've got lots of them.

I’ve had pest control get rid of one nest in a wall and I’ve killed two others in the ground and under a window. It’s bad this year.

Exterminator came in last Fri and knocked down, sprayed a big nest under the new deck. But now they are in the basement because the contractor (i fired him) left a hole in the wall leading to the laundry room. I filled the hole with raid and then spray foam. But now there is a new nest about 2ft from the hole in the wall. FML.

If their nest site isn't a threat i say let them be.
They eat plenty of other insects that are a PITA.
They are also good pollinators.

The theory is that they are territorial and if you hang up one of those fake wasp nests the won't bother you. Any better results than deer whistles?

Soap and water kills them too. Load a water gun or sprayer for attack at a distance. Soak the nest.

I think fake nests work to keep them from establishing new nests nearby. It won't make existing wasps leave imo.

I had one in my full-face helmet a few weeks ago! I could feel something crawling, squishing around my beard, and I kept sticking my finger in to squish or push whatever it was out. Was also going through a complicated intersection so the timing was not great.

I pulled over as soon as I could, the tickling sensation/crawling-around feeling was just too gross and I had a slightly panicky need to get the helmet off, although I was only thinking it was a bug, didn't consider something that could sting like a mofo.

Anyway, got the helmet off and it was a big, fat F'ing wasp in there. I don't why it didn't sting me when I was shoving and poking it with my finger. That could have a been a bad scene in the middle of the busy intersection.

Many wasp nests die off in the fall, maybe all? The queen leaves the nest and finds a spot to winter, the rest of the wasps technically starve to death without the queen (this is why they get "aggressive" for sugar/food in September and early October). In the spring the queen emerges and starts a new nest. I guess one risk if they are inside is she may winter inside somewhere?

So you can go thermonuclear now or wait them out. Regardless a strategy for the spring is a good idea. Fake nests help to discourage new ones. Make sure everything is sealed up before they start up again next year.

We have a nest that has settled in our door frame.

i guess i shouldve recaulked.

I was doing some demo in our basement a few years ago and pulled down some ceiling to find a wasp nest that had filled the space between the joists, I ran for my life and closed the door behind me... Once my nerves settled I went back and took a peak (a good while later) and thankfully the nest was abandoned, the shopvac made quick work of it.

As for going nuclear, I have drilled a hole through the wall (from inside or outside depending...), immediately stuck the spray nozzle in the hole (even add a short straw if needed) and filled it up and then immediately blocked the hole I made. A large nest, maybe a few times. If you know the entrance, start there. Kill the queen and all is done.

Don't look at me, I'm an atheist.

We keep a Blue Jay feeder at the edge of our property, it attracts a lot of Blue Jays and woodpeckers. Fill it with cheap peanuts and you'll have no wasps.

Blue Jays and Woodies rip the nests open to get the larvae, wasps don't much care for that.

Couple years ago I was DEEP in the bush with my dogs (at least 2km from closest road as the crow flies) on ATV, and I stopped to clear with chainsaw a tree that had fallen on the trail. As I was firing up the chainsaw, I noticed one of my dogs freaking out biting at his skin - and it was then I realized I had parked my ATV right on an underground wasp (or maybe hornet?? I can't tell the difference) nest! By the time I realized it, my ATV was covered in wasps/hornets and so were me and my dogs.

I ran back down the trail throwing off my clothes (as the wasps were inside both my pants and shirt already) until I was far enough away that I could clear them off me and my dogs. I didn't know what I was going to do, but luckily after waiting about an hour I was able to slowly walk back towards the ATV, gathering up my chainsaw and clothing, and was surprised to see the wasps had mostly went back to whatever they were doing before I disturbed them.

I tied my dogs up a good 300 m away, and it was the quickest ATV start/reverse/GTFO I'd ever done! I think I counted close to 50 stings that night... luckily I wasn't alergic!

I was on holiday once and we managed to get a tour of a coffee plantation all to ourselves. The guide was a worker at the plantation and he drove us to a grove of orange trees so we could pick a couple. Got out the truck and the sky went dark and there was a droning noise and he said “don’t move”. Biggest swarm of bees I’ve ever seen came down and moved through the area eventually heading off.

Pretty sure I nearly soiled myself.
