Volkswagen Golf GTI

So they say in tests. But I don't know from experience.
Some people have this preconceived notion that bigger is safer. Not always the case.

My condolences to your niece but we are on a motorcycle forum. Most of us put safety 2nd to how the car/bike feels or even looks.

Btw smart cars are pretty safe cars just ugly and slow.

Just because we are on a motorcycle forum doesn't mean we aren't concerned with safety, not everyone rides a gixer like a squid.

Saw a volvo take on a pick up truck once.

The volvo lost.

If you care so much about safety drive a car and don't ride. Even if your in the best most expensive gear you'd be more safe in any car.

It's ignorant of you to say gixxer riders are squids. I have spent a lot of money on gear. Almost half the price of my bike.

i've owned mk2's and mk3's and my family is currently driving a mk4.

I will never buy another volkwagen...

i like them, but too much 'random' stuff goes wrong with them. annoying stuff, like in the mk4 (its a '10 city golf) the instrument panel lights don't work, the radio scans automatically when you turn it on. the hatch lock didn't work (volkswagen fixed underwarranty)

just seriously, a new car shouldn't have all these issues right off the lot..

i love them, but I hate them

Correct me if I'm wrong , but I think the MK4 VW Golfs were made in Mexico...VW decided to produce the new redesigned 2011 and up VW Golfs back to Germany. To try and resolve alot of the misc. reliability issues that there were recently having.

Actualy the Golf is no longer considered VW's entry model. The Jetta now is. Take a look at the standard features in the Golf inculding the base Engine and options. I've only had my Golf for 8 months now so I can't give a long term reliabilty summary. But as mentioned before this car has so far been the most reliable vehicle I've had in the first 8 months of ownership.

With regards to safety. I think the Golf had a 5 star rating all around. For a small car it's defiantely not a light car. Which leads me to believe that there is alot more protective steel than a similiar sized vehicle like the Japanese cars. (just my opinion). The car also comes standard with 8 air bags, traction control, ABS, stability control etc.

On a side note alot the parts on the VW Golf are also the same parts used in the Audi...for example I was puting my snow tires on the other day and noticed the brake rotars all have the VW and Audi logos stamped in them. The interior of the Golf is alot more refined than a similar sized Japanese vehicle. To me it looks an Audi from the inside.

I obviously don't think the Golf is the best performance car in its segment (eg when compalred to the WRX). But having said that I think it's a better overall package. Price, fit and finish, maintenance costs, functionality, insurance costs, fuel costs, dealer network etc.

Any paramedics on the board who know how smart cars do in real world tests?

My mother-in-law had a Golf before, it felt like a go-cart going around corners.

the 4's were made in mexico, but my 3 and 2 were not and they were a lot worst than the 4. my locks constantly froze shut (had to carry di-icer with me), my sunroof motor worked when it wanted, i have to replace the blower fan, the abs modular, the TPS, and these are just the random things that I had to fix. I've owned a bunch of other cars and things like this have never gone wrong.

volkswagens are audi's share platforms, and parts, its always been like that.

JD Power doesn't give them a lot of credit either
volkswagen got 2 out of 5 (audi got a 3 out of 5)

I dunno whenever someone mentions vw golf i automatically think chick cars. ;)

How good are the vw dealerships with warranty fixes and such? That would be the deal breaker for me IMO.

I haven't had a warranty issue yet, so I am not sure about their warranty service. From past experience: Mercedes warranty coverage was excellent - they even covered a major repair that was 20,000 km out of warranty. Ford and GM were the worst. It was always a constant battle to get them to fix an item that is covered under warranty. Every time I had to go into the service department at the GM dealerships, I always saw someone arguing with their service reps to get something fixed under warranty. I will never touch a GM, Ford or Chyrsler product just because of their bad reputation for warranty service.

they were good with our hatch issue. Literally walked in, told the service advisor, he came out to look at it, said he's sorry about that, took my info asked when I want to leave it to have it fixed and that was that.

I dealt wth PHaff in New Market. They dropped me off at Upper canada mall and called me/picked me up when it was ready.
They were fantastic, but then again, we had JUST bought the car from them 3 days ago, so anything less would had me irate!

I considered the Mk4 to be a low point. Too much cost cutting. Mk3's were cheaply made but simple so you could mostly deal with the odd little quirks, Mk4's were more complex vehicles than the Mk3 but they didn't spend the money where it was needed on quality components. Window regulator clips, mass airflow sensors, ignition coils, etc. I had a '96 Passat TDI before, which was on a different vehicle platform, but it's not unlike a Mk3 Golf/Jetta in how it was built. I skipped the Mk4 generation although my dad had a couple of them - and never had any trouble with them.

The Mk5 has been much better. Having said that, VW is currently having an issue with the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) on the TDI engines and I will not be buying one until it's well proven that they've fixed the problem. The new (US-made) Passat TDI is a very impressive, albeit bland-looking package. They've fixed the intercooler-icing issue that plagued the common-rail Golf/Jetta TDI in cold weather and there are known to be some differences in the fuel system. Whether that's what it took to fix the HPFP issue ... remains to be seen.

If your driving a smart car, you wont need a coffin. It is your car/coffin all in one ..

Talking about vehicles hitting other vehicles .. name it. I've probably seen it, or been to it ..
