Virus caused rogers to suspend my internet..... Any help?

So apparently I have a serious virus that is attacking rogers, thus causing them to suspend my internet. They only told me that it's called a bot net drone, and the last time it was spotted. They won't tell me what it was doing nor do thy have any information on which computer it was coming from.

What am I supposed to do now? Do I have to waste money on geek sqaud or some **** to have someone check and clear each individual computer? Can't even download any anti virus bloatware to catch this ****.

This sucks because plenty of people come to my place and use my wifi, so for all I know it is one of their laptops causing this to happen.

Anyways, has anyone else been through this? What did you have to do?

My internet has been slow recently. I don't know if its the same problem.

There is a Microsoft Antivirus program which is free. Look it up. Should be compatible with your windows OS

Going to have to get my buddy to download it for me. Does any of that stuff eat up a lot of computing? I've avoided any type of anti virus programs because whenever I did have them they seemed to slow down my computers more than any virus could.

I wouldn't doubt that they would have something to do with it to be honest. It's just frustrating that they can't give me any information on it at all. I mean if they can detect it on their end shouldn't they be able to give me an idea of what to look for? ****ing cunts.

Boot your pc in "safe mode with networking"
Install Malwarebytes (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Run a full scan. If a single scan detects several malware/viruses, reboot into safe mode again and run a second scan.

Boot in regular mode and run another scan.

Do this to each pc.

It is very unlikely Rogers has anything to do with it. Getting rid of a virus is a whole other kettle of fish and not really their responsibility, to be honest. The Malicious Software Removal Tool only runs when you tell it to, and Security Essentials is fairly low-impact.

Also, there are probably some serious legal implications to them identifying the exact trojan on your computer, as analyzing their own customer's internet traffic is a bit dicey.

Excellent idea, and look where it got you. You've probably had so many viruses you didn't even know it, possibly even a few Trojans stealing your info and who knows what else, and if you have multiple computers you may have infected them as well. Your best bet would be to wipe all your computers and start from scratch and install the virus util followed by anything else you need to install after the fact.

Did you receive a call from Rogers telling you that it was a "bot net drone" and your internet was suspended or did you receive it in an e-mail?

I highly doubt Rogers detected the type of virus as they would have no way of identifying it unless someone is sending ridiculous amounts of packets for spam.

There are a few ways you can deal with it:

The lower level, least effective way of dealing with it would be downloading multiple (known) virus scanners and try figuring it out that way and deleting it or at least finding the source. This would not really do much if the virus is FUD (Fully undetected), in other words, not in the anti-virus dictionary and would not appear.

Also, virus scanners cannot delete files if they are currently running (which it probably would be).

The more effective way of dealing with this:

A lot of viruses are added to your computer startup so you need to address that first.

press the windows key + r and type in msconfig
click the startup tab and uncheck anything that looks foreign

open task manager
click View -> Select columns -> check PID's
leave it open

open command prompt (cmd)
type in netstat -o
search for a connection that looks out of place and note the PID

go to your taskmgr and look for the PID of your suspected virus (in the processes tab)
right click that process and click open file location

end the process of the selected virus and delete the file in the folder that you just opened.

If it says the program is in use, it is probably opened up again from another process. You can do 2 things from here. Note the file location and start up your computer in safe mode and delete it there or end the process and quickly delete the file before it comes back.

If all goes well, the virus should most likely be gone even after you restart if you did things correctly.

As a side note, many people name their virus svchost.exe as many noob hackers use this as it is usually a default setting but it is also an application that windows runs. You just need to identify the PID out of place.

Note: I am writing this strictly from my memory

^ That being said, Malware Bytes is a pretty good anti-virus.

There are also some forums with professional white hat hackers that will help you resolve/diagnose your problems for free.

I also find going to technicians in big box stores often result in getting misdiagnosed or robbed. Some places even charge $50-$70 for a diagnosis and it is often wrong and you hear a lot of "your xxx is defective". xxx being almost any piece of hardware in your computer.

Highly doubt, almost 100% sure that they cannot diagnose what kind of virus is on your computer from their side. I call BS.

If you were notified by e-mail by Rogers suspending your service it could be hackers using a spoofed e-mail address (yes it is possible) and you should read up on this and consider it as a possibility.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack

If you were contacted by phone, then it really is them and they blocked your connection or your friend is trolling you.

While being suspicious of this kind of thing is healthy, this is something Rogers actually does. They detect certain types of trojans like this via traffic monitoring, usually because your computer is sending out a large amount of **** over your connection. Generally they are doing you a favour by stopping it from consuming your bandwidth.

I had this happen a few times like 7-8 years ago. My family computer had a bunch of stuff downloaded from KaZaa and no one bothered to scan them before they opened them. Fixed it up and then called rogers. They made me listen to a long speech and agree at the end to their TOS before they would turn my internet back on.

If you stop watching porn and downloading Avril Lavigne albums none of this will happen again.

Cool story bro. You don't have to reply with nonsense. Just pat yourself on the back for being such an elite computer user and never getting any viruses. Btw, so far I've found nothing on my computers and chances are it's one of the people who regularly come to my house with their laptops.

switch to bell

Looked into it. Told them I wanted at least 40mbs if I was going to switch. Stupid ***** wasted my time for half an hour talking about how amazing bell fibe is only to finally tell me that they can only offer 5mbs. Was looking into tekksavy as well, still might switch but I have a fairly decent Package with rogers right now.

Lol, I used to have a laptop that I used solely for that. I've completely disconnected a while ago untill I can completely wipe it and start fresh. I only use my computer for games and youtube now. I don't really browse at all on it.

To everyone else, thank you for taking the time to give me in depth and detailed steps for what I should do. In the next couple of days I'm going to go through the three computers that are used and see what I can find.

For the ones asking what happened with rogers. I got a call from a machine saying my internet has been disconnected. When I called rogers it brought me right to the tech support. They told me that apparently I had a botnet drone and didn't really want to tell me anything else. Even went as far as suggesting that I may be doing it deliberately. After that I just told the guy to go **** himself and hung up. They were smart enough to suspend my connection the day after they took their payment.
