Very upsetting global news segment

I did not mean it to come out as 'blaming the cagers' I am fine with the report other than I think at the end they should have just had a reminder that bikes are out now and they could have said to a reminder about checking blind spots and what not... You are absolutley right though, treating the streets like a track is stupid and I have seen many riders ride like this and when they get in an crash they blame the car driver which is wrong, if you ride like an ass it is going to catch up to you eventually

I thought it was really well done.Bikes and some bike riders are dangerous. If you cannot accept this fact, get out now.The three GTAM riders did a really good job of representing us.Especially Goldie!
I agree... it opens the eyes to all motorists.
We all need to be aware and drive / ride accordingly.

Waaay to go GTAM riders who participated!!!:p

Considering the various ways this could be presented, I though it was a well done piece. They obviously included various members of the motorcycling community.

I agree that there may be other "more valuable" stories to present to the general media that would benefit our community better (like SMIDSY awareness). But it is a fact that there have been a lot of fatalities lately. But seriously, motorcycling is dangerous. As more people get into it, the probability of accidents in general increases greatly. Just judging by the amount of bikes at work, there are more riders this season than last.

On a sidenote, the SMIDSY is the most common multi vehicle accident scenario for a rider, but I do not think that it is the leading scenario for fatal accidents.

All things considered, the global news piece seemed quite reasonable to me.

It's fact not fiction, only us riders can change that. The fact is most vehicle accidents are due to driver and or rider error. Period. After commuting in and out of the city for many years, I'm glad I'm not doing it anymore.

I thought the piece was nicely done as well.

Bahahah Goldie! Wut wut!

Best line of the day from this chick :) This is also why the wife is guarenteed to outlive me and collect my life insurance hehe

In all 45 motorcycle fatalities since 1995, the driver was male. Motorcycling is a male-dominated sport, but Steele believes that women make safer drivers than men. “We tend to be a little more cautious on everything,” she said. “Maybe we want to keep the species up and running versus knocking yourself out.

I just thought this was a very poorly put together report (and WHY the tops story???)
heres the link to the video, what is your opinions?

I swear to god I was exiting dvp @ bayview/bloor at the same time they were making this report and I saw a cager parked and sitting appox. 50 meters away from the reporter in white(last one in the video) as if he is sitting on the park bench and I saw another guy walking with a kid in a stroller on the other side of the road....I consider both incident very very dangerous because if you consider the nature of that road the guy with a parked car is pure distraction and what to say about the guy with the stroller as you are not allowed to walk on that road because it is still regarded as a ramp to dvp.....

The point is both incident happened right under their nose while they were making this report and yet they went ranting about riders....How come no one reports such dangerous behavior of cagers and pedestrians and everyone want to take a dig at riders......All I wanna say is don't listen to this stupid reports and be your own judge as long as you look after yourself while out on the road I don't think this stats matters..........

That's over 64% of Toronto motorcycle fatalities in the last 16 years in which the motorcycle rider (and not some left-turner) was determined to be at fault. That to me suggests that the majority of motorcycle fatalities could be eliminated if riders themselves got their house in order, particularly as far as excessive speed is concerned.

And I bet plenty of those deaths where it was determined to be "the rider's fault", was in fact a pothole's fault or the biker trying to avoid a careless cager (cutting them off or something) causing them to lose control... Don't blindly trust statistics.

A lot of you people are trying to find blame where there sometimes is none. When two cars are involved in a "fender bender",the collision shop and wins. When a car and a bike collide, the car wins. They are called accidents.Yes in the fender bender, one of the drivers will be more at fault. But that's it.
It really is a simple matter that bikes are dangerous.

I thought the piece was well done, and timely, because riding season has started. Public awareness does not start out with a biker bias. This might make drivers wary and may even turn people off.

...I am fine with the report other than I think at the end they should have just had a reminder that bikes are out now and they could have said to a reminder about checking blind spots and what not...

The message was implicit. Featured was a biker in all black leather with a mohawk. I would guess that drivers would think the rider would be mean and dangerous. It turns out to be a nice girl, and she gets to explain the healing of all her injuries. For a horrific and life scarring event she actually came out Ok. This is a good news story.

Takeaways for the audience would include:
-not all bikers are badass and dangerous. Most of us are pretty normal, nice people.
-bikers are riding and they can get seriously hurt by cars
-it is now riding season, so be aware

The piece humanizes motorcycle riding by putting a friendly face on motorcycle riders, when in reality all car drivers see is a fast racing machine and a rider, who's face is usually shielded by a full face helmet and is therefore near anonymous. Maybe if car drivers personally knew more friendly motorcycle riders, like the girl with the mohawk, they might better look out for us. One of the negatives of a full face helmet is the hiding of our face. When you cannot see someone's face there is a greater tendency to mistrust and fear.

GlobalTV does not do public service announcements like in Britain and Colorado. For this the provincial government needs to pony up cash, and they won't even let us ride in the HOV lanes. We should be thankful to Global for doing what the provincial government would never do for us. I am considering writing a thank you letter to Global for highlighting our interests, as well as a nasty letter to McGuinty for not doing more for motorcycling in Ontario (Oh yea, I did that already).

about the car drivers that turn left in front of us
Goldie, the asian chick in the video if you do not know her, was injured by a vehicle pulling out from a side street (making a left turn).

Goldie, you are famous! I am going to need your autograph pls.

many of us on this forum know that, but they neglected to mention that in the video.

although, i agree with this video that a lot of us riders could ride a little more carefully, abide by the rules of the road and not go crazy speeds on the busy streets so these 'accidents' could be prevented but thats all this video showed. nowhere did it mention that the drivers of the cars should pay more attention to bikes while changing lanes or coming out of the driveways.

to me all this video showed was that the motorcyclists are riding recklessly thats why they are getting into alot of these 'accidents'. it would have been better if they showed both point of views that some of these 'accidents' occured were fault of the drivers too.

Seems to me the point of the story is to create awareness to cagers that motorcycles are on the road too. And don't get ****** that they tell you to slow down. There are still way too many squids out there riding crotch rockets like morons and they need to be told.

Haven't seen the report but I wouldn't be shocked to find out that numbnut Jackson Proskow was behind it. Global is FAMOUS for this type of stereo-typing. Others too, but no one puts a shine on it quite like Global manages to do.
There's no bike love within 150 miles of GTA and the media are first and foremost bottom-feeding troughers. They hold all the cards. You address or call them on something, then sit back and try to recognize your piece, but then discover just how edited your words became. Media sucks the bowl and gets the overspray on anyone who gives them the time of day.

I agree with thinking it was a good piece. Perhaps left some things out but good in general. And at least it does remind people we are out there... even if people are thinking 'gees I am glad I dont ride' they are still thinking and remembering we are out there.

Goldie does an awesome job advocating motorcycle safety. Shes been in a few articles etc.

As for left turning cars.... we'll I've personally never had an issue... but then I watch for it, change lanes. slow down etc when I hit intersections.... I find I get less surprises when I ride preparing for them.

What I don't like is the upcoming story tonight at 6 that is very pro E-bike. Those things are a huge danger from what I've seen.

I was there for all of the interviews except for Goldies and all three of the guys spoke about riding like they were invisible and having to look out for cagers. Not sure why they did not put more enphasis on that or more of those clips in. I guess that is what happens when you have a none rider doing the report and not enough time to fit everything into it. The segment was only 2 and a half minutes.
