Vehicle choices

I was going say it's sucks to be buying now but you should get top dollar for the taco at least. I'm in the market for wheels but everything's a little whack right now.
I'm only doing it right now because i want my wife to see that I'm trying to do something positive for her.
It's odd to go into a new car showroom and only see a couple of clean used units.

Sounds like you do that all the time.

As far as car shopping goes I find there's so very little I want. The styling - does every car need to look like darth vader scowling? Electronics - I don't a giant info-tainment console blocking the dash. I also don't really want power windows, and heated six way seats. I also like to switch gears myself. I'll ending up dropping 20-30k on a car I don't really want. Get off my lawn!!!!!!

(just realized I want the KLR version of a car)

You need a JEEP good sir….somehow my buddy got a JEEP with manual windows, locks and auto transmission because he can’t drive stick.

I didn’t even know they still made cars with manual doors and windows….yet here we are.

Ugh.I hate buying 4 wheeled vehicles. We have decided that the "Turney" seat is the way to go for my wife.I thought it would be compatible with our Tacome. But it's not.

Heres the list.
My dad is losing mobility and has difficulty getting into cars. My mom dragged him around to every dealer in town trying out passenger seats.

The winner was a Mazda CX5. Placement of door handles, reasonable door size allows room to swing legs, standing butt height, slippery seat cloth all seemed to consider compromised mobility. We didn't need to go the Turney route

After 30 years and a dozen expensive luxury cars I started thinking your way. My last 3 cars have been basic reliable transportation, not terribly expensive but adequate.

I wouldnt go without power windows and locks, or AC.

Mini is no power anything but since you can easily reach the other door to use the lock or window, that's not a big deal. If it was a boat where you couldn't reach everything while driving, I prefer power.

We were going somewhere and with my wife driving, I decided to do a crossword puzzle. I then thought about what a person with Parkinson's went through 24/7 as she hit every bump in the road and me not being able to easily write a letter never mind a word. My frustration was short lived. It's difficult to comprehend a permanent problem of this nature and the search for a solution.

Gal in our social circle sells wheelchairs, powered and regular and mobility products. Its all about keeping people in thier own homes and making life easier.
As short as 20yrs ago we had few products to choose from, and a lot of difficulty sourcing anything. Now every major city has a half dozen outlets with mobility aids.

The routine we have now is strange. Wheelchair at 90 deg to door, stand her up holding each other's elbows, shuffle her to the open car door, sit her into the car on the padded transfer disc. Pick her legs up and put them in. Then i get into the back seat, reach around and grab the waistband of her pants. Haul her up into the seat. Ugh.

That sounds like "Throw your back out" territory. Then you have two invalids.

Princess auto has small cranes that fit into the cargo stake pocket of your pickup truck . Lift wheelchair , wifey all in one shot, couple ratchet straps and your done.
You can even get a great deal on a small tarp while your there so the nieghbors don't complain your insensitive about the weather.

My wifes grandma was pushing 300 lbs and that was roughly the same process to get her in and out of vehicles. Thankfully we didnt have to do it often. Most visits were in her place and we brought takeout.

Silly as it sounds I was thinking in terms of a modified engine lift device that would pick up the patient from the wheelchair. The patient would be seated in some sort of sling in the chair. The wheels of the lift would be sized to go under the vehicle and lowered into the standard car seat.

Sit the patient down, remove the surplus hardware and stow the excess stuff in the trunk.

The advantage is there is no modification vehicle to vehicle.

One disadvantage is image. Few people want to look like cargo, even if carefully tarped.

Very serious comment. A neighbour couple, up in age when she developed a neurological disease and needed assistance. Her husband called me one day to help lift her off the floor.

She tried to move from her wheelchair to a easy chair and fell. Care workers warned him that if he hurt himself lifting her there would be no one to feed her and take care of daily needs.

The saddest part was she was upset with him for letting her lay on the floor. "My good for nothing husband letting me lie here..." One had to realize it was frustration talking. They were good people pushed to their limits.

Lifting a person with no muscular control is very hard and she wasn't extremely overweight. They have no lift points and you don't want to hurt them.

I have had my Yaris for almost 10 years and the power locks still piss me off. Flip the key once and only the drivers door unlocks. Twice unlocks everything. I'm constantly finding myself having to go back and hit the door unlock button because I now need something out of the back seat or hatch.
I get that it's a safety thing for women late at night but it's stuck in my craw since I got it. And anyone who really knows me, knows I'm more of a safety third kind of guy.

For many cars, you can poke them in the brain through OBDII port to change behaviour of locks (eg driver/all, this side/all, all, etc). I've never played with a Toyota to see what's possible.

With some GM products it could be done with the key fob.

That's funny. Even when I was commuting 5 days a week my key was (and is ) the manual key. The Squeeze comandeered the fob right from the get go.

So, I'm Jed Clampett now?
