Under 25 with a sport bike...what do you pay?

Hi guys,

I`ve seen a lot of these threads about people complaining and wanting to get cheap insurance. I`ve already come to terms that I will not get that. However I`m curious to find out what some of you pay for a sport or supersport if you are UNDER 25 as that seeems to be the magic age. I have a G licence for almost 5 years and an M2. I am getting the 2011 CBR 600RRA next week most likely and the cheapest quote I have gotten for liability only is 4025$ per year. State farm offered 4056/year or 338/month. That seems to be what I will have to pay.

If you`re under 25 with a sport or super sport let me know what you are currently paying. Just looking to see how the rates stack up.

Thanks for the help.

My quotes for full coverage on an 03-06 ZX6R 636 (full coverage) were all 5 figures, I'd take the fact you're getting insured under 25 with an SS as a win. My stats are about the same as yours

Holy crap!! Isn't that like ~30% of the cost of the bike? If you've had your G for 5 years that makes you approximately 23 y.o right? I'm not here to tell you how to spend your money obviously (and maybe this amount is not a huge deal for you), but perhaps it might be worthwhile to ride something smaller/cheaper for a year or two? The insurance savings will cover a significant portion of that 600 SS once you turn 25.

What have you ridden before?

Do you mind PMing me the name of the agent or broker you used?

I've ridden a couple of harleys and a 250 but I've never actually owned my own bike. I meant I have a driver's licence for 5 years not Full G for 5 years. I`m 21. I looked at something smaller and for a 250 they asked for 2000. So it`s a 2000 difference, plus I`m getting this as a gift which is why i`m choosing the 600. Insurance I`ll pay myself but the bike is a gift. Also I do not want to go to a 1000 so this will pretty much be my bike for a long long while.

Id suggest, start smaller, ride for a full year on it, (you might get bored) and then after that year, rates will probably start dropping, on insurance. After insurance has dropped you can start looking into bigger (and the money youll have saved on you premium + resale price = a 600cc)
So this first bike youll be able to drop, beat the **** out of and enjoy with more ease of mind.

Otherwise you can also look into getting whoever is buying your bike to buy me one as well :)

I`ll check with them hahaha. And i`ve ridden dirt bikes quite a bit, I know it`s nothing like riding on the street but I`m planning on taking it slowly not just jumping on the highway and gunning it lol. Also the 250 felt a little small. I guess you could say it`s a personal decision made with my heart not with my wallet. Another quick question after that first year of insurance is there a significant decrease in insurance if you have no claims? i have a friend and his insurance dropped by almost half the second year. Just curious.

are you sure the person giving you this "gift" isn't trying to get you killed...?? gifting a 21 year old with minimal experience a modern SS...LOL.

haha fair statement, however why is it always seen as a deathtrap? That is the argument I always get. Just because you see most young guys zooming in between cars and all that with SS bike doesn't mean everyone is part of that. If you respect the bike and ride it responsibly why can't a less experienced person ride one? I think me riding one is safer than those crazy guys that always cut me off at 120 km/h + with inches to spare. (many of whom probably have lots of experience)

So I started with a 250 and want to move to a 600. Called the insurance company and the insurance on the 600 is double that of the 250. I asked the agent will the price drop now that I've been riding for a year and she flat out said, "No". Our prices start low and stay that way.

The insurance company was State Farm. I didn't post the price cause i'm well over 25 and my insurance is cheaper than you guys....

You guys are forgetting to post if you have any tickets.
The going rate just about anywhere for any sport bike for a male under 25 is going to be at least $3500 with an M2.

And here in lies the rub. The Police know the cost for insurance so when they pull over 10 sport bike riders they know several of them do NOT have proper insurance coverage or no insurance coverage.

Would you guys post like this so we can follow easier:

Age:
Bike: Make Model Year
Your license classification: G M1 or just M1 or M2
Tickets on your record currently:
Location: major intersection where you live

I remember when I hit 25 my car insurance dropped by half. I got quoted for a 650 (not SS) $900/yr, even if I doubled that to $1800 it's still nowhere near $4k, lol, wow, bike insurance is such a scam under 25.

Something else to consider: SV650. It's a nice bike that bridges the 250s and the 600SS. Might be cheaper on insurance depending on the provider (not State Farm, they go by CCs) and a lot cheaper for the 'gift provider' (I'm assuming that you're looking at a new or new-ish bike).

I looked at some other bikes. The insurance i checked with was State Farm and Duffy. State farm said that once I hit 25 the insurance for the same bike will drop to about 1300/year. So man it`s such a scam before hand but not much you can do. From what i see 3500-4000 is the going rate.

To end the whole gift provider thing it`s my parents and grandparents so whether i get this one or a cheaper one won't be a big deal to them cause insurance is still on me. I will check out the SV650 however the look isn't quite for me.

For an earlier comment I have a GM2, No tickets and in Toronto (North York) and am 21

Doesnt end here...are they looking to adopt?

Check out the New Riders section on why a supersport isn't a beginners bike. I tried learning on a ZX6R last year, and I regret every second of it. It made me not want to ride anymore and I actually gave up on it and didn't bother with my M2. Now this year I've had a change of heart after playing around with a couple friends' smaller bikes. Everyone has different experiences and it's a hotly debated topic but ultimately starting on an SS is a much steeper learning curve than starting with something with more low-end and mid-range power, that doesn't fly into the high rpms early on you.

Look at a GS500f or an SV650 and you won't regret either one unless all you're going for is "oooh it's a supersport"

This is an 06 Sv650:

If you put full fairings on it it gets a much more aggressive SS look to it while still having manageable power.

Im 32 and the quote I got for a 600cc bike is higher than $1300. I have a clean record for riding and driving.
So I'd take that with a grain of salt.
