Much as I'd love to fall on the side of Brit TV (with my biases already well established), I can't disagree about The Wire as the greatest show. No other show has managed to simultaneously entertain, amaze and alter my understanding of the world like it did. Even Season 2, which I didn't like as much at the time, makes perfect sense within the overall arch of the show.

Still, holding Line of Duty to that standards seems a bit unfair. It's a short list of shows at that level...

I watch almost exclusively British television. Every now and then something comes up on Netflix or Prime but they are rare and I am even at the point where I may cancel Netflix all together. I bounce back and forth between BritBox and Acorn. I loved Line of Duty, all the seasons had me binging through the entire season. For humour I love Would I Lie to You or WILTY. You just don't get that level of wit on anything N. American.

Try Unforgotten with Nicola Walker. Excellent series and amazing actress. We try to watch everything she's in.

We like Brit dramas and comedies and “Nordic noire” precisely because they aren’t N American. A lot of North American dramas are pretty formulaic and a bit “Hollywoody“. Not everything is of course but a lot is.
 
Since we're talking British tv, I really like Death In Paradise. It's light, non serious tv, with beautiful scenery. Good entertainment

Would I Lie to You? topped our list of funniest shows for years until Taskmaster recently took top spot. Both almost guaranteed to have us in tears at least once per show. Lee Mack recently won a BAFTA for his hosting work. Incidentally, he's on the current Taskmaster series.

Trying to explain WILTY to people is almost impossible. It sounds pretty underwhelming until you watch. The chemistry between David Mitchell, Rob Brydon and Lee Mack is perfect. Anytime Rhod Gilbert, James Acaster or especially Bob Mortimer are on, you know it'll be special...

Happy Valley and Broadchurch are two more great but dark shows. We're now watching Mare of Easttown on HBO/Crave, and it's got a similar feel, despite being American.

In a similar vein with strong but flawed women as leads, we're rewatching Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren. First two are near perfect, the third drops a bit, and we're on the fourth and it's not quite as good. Hopefully it picks up again...
 
Speaking of Rob Brydon he was pretty funny in Gavin and Stacey, which is a good show to watch- James Cordon before he become Hollywoodized. David Mitchell is a very funny individual, as so is Lee Mack. It's just that type of humour is only really understood in the British Isles.

Broadchurch is one of the best detective shows ever, imho.
Hinterland (set in Wales) is also really good as is Shetland (although I prefer the books).
Happy Valley is no longer on NetFlix - which is annoying as I hadn’t watched it yet.
Mare of Easttown is really good and I would agree...very dark and gritty, but it is HBO so not really surprising.
 
I find myself lately watching more disney plus...and I miss crave
netflix is pretty mediocre at this point

I am a big David Mitchell fan. Peep Show has to be one of my favourite comedies of all time. The show really was brilliant in concept and execution. I am also a big Rob Brydon fan so the two of them had my interested when I first heard of it. I had not heard of Lee Mack and do not know anything about him outside of WILTY? but they are a great trio and the banter is second to none.

Unforgotten is a great series as well and worth checking out. A basic detective show solving cold cases, but very well cast and intriguing stories. I am going through one of my favourite series Midsomer Murders again. Have to say I miss the original Barnaby. The "new" guy does not have the same charm.

John Nettles is another good actor, prior to the Midsomer series he was on TV in a similar show called Bergerac @jc100 will remember that.

Another good old British series is Inspector Morse with John Thaw.

Reflection of how poor modern day shows are I have started watching old re-runs of Colombo.

Need a way to find to watch the streets of San Francisco without having to own a VCR player.

I remember all those. Really well written and well acted. I loved Morse... do you remember Z Cars? John Thaw was in that too wasn’t he?

Have watched Hinterland (my Mum's side is Welsh, and I spent time there as a kid, so anything with that accent is good with me), but not Shetland.

Olivia Colman in Broadchurch is fantastic.

Olivia Colman in Peep Show is also fantastic. We haven't watched many, so it's on our list to binge. As for Lee Mack, aside from the usual panel shows, he's also in a sitcom called Not Going Out. I haven't seen many episodes, but it seems to be a very 'classic' sitcom, with a laugh track, lots of comedy around misunderstandings, and zingy one liners. Hugh Dennis is also in it, and he's usually hilarious as a straight man.

As for David Mitchell, he's amazing. I first found him in That Mitchell and Webb Look, an incredible sketch show he did with Robert Webb, also from Peep Show. Numberwang and "Are we the baddies?" are two enduring bits. He's also incredible on QI. His rant about customer service is a thing of genius:


Haven't tried Unforgotten, but will definitely add it to the list.

Love Morse, too! There's something about the scholarly sleepiness of Oxford that makes the perfect backdrop for murder mysteries...

I was somewhat finding the same with Netflix and while perusing Disney I stumbled onto the fact they have a lot of new "old" movies added to their library. When we first got Disney they didn't have much other than the stuff on the main screen but now they're pretty good.

I started watching Line of Duty on Netflix today and after a few episodes I'm into it.
 
Big Shot - Along the same lines as Ted Lasso, but not quite as good. Still very watchable though
