Much as I'd love to fall on the side of Brit TV (with my biases already well established), I can't disagree about The Wire as the greatest show. No other show has managed to simultaneously entertain, amaze and alter my understanding of the world like it did. Even Season 2, which I didn't like as much at the time, makes perfect sense within the overall arch of the show.The wire is also all encompassing, it covers EVERYTHING, from crime, to policing, to the school system, journalism, politics, corruption ,working class struggles, manufacturing and job outsourcing etc etc etc
it covers the entire city of baltimore, and urban life in general
each season is a different show onto itself basically
Still, holding Line of Duty to that standards seems a bit unfair. It's a short list of shows at that level...
