Turbans vs Helmets

So, if this passes, and then I grow my beard out and wrap a turban around my head, can I ride without a helmet too? Can a police officer pull me over and question my religion?

Wondered that myself today. I'm sure like colander guy someone outside the exemption will take full advantage of things to make a point.

It's a very slippery slope.

To be fair, as an MPP, if his constituents want the law changed it's his duty to advocate for it. If he's doing it for himself, that's a different story.

Oh life, it's bigger. It's bigger than you. And you are not me. The length that I will go to. The distance in your eyes. Oh no, I've said too much. I set it up.
That's me in the corner. That's me in the spot light. Losing my helmet. Trying to keep up with you. And I don't know if I can do it. Oh no, I've said too much. I haven't said enough.

The bill's sponsor should be fighting for things to aid all motorcyclists and to make their endeavors safer (e.g. filtering, HOV lane use etc) rather than selfishly pandering to his own personal demographic...again.

In that case he should be fighting to abolish motorcycles on public highways, and to put those now ex-riders in Volvos.

@inreb....consider this....consider this the helmet issue of the century. I thought that I heard you laughing.

@Joe Bass you shiny happy person.

I'm sure Harleys are gonna start a cult... although they almost technically already are

Pastafarians revere pirates, so I'm sure they could work on some kind of crossover/joint venture. A number of countries are recognizing Pastafatian weddings (NZ for one). It's gaining traction.

Might be a skid mark?

Although you might, I wouldn't agree with such an effort but it would make more sense than fighting to increase brain injuries & death for his buddies in the name of religious symbolism.

I wouldn't agree with such an effort. I would however be somewhat understanding of a move to more strictly regulate motorcycles (and cars) above a given power-to-weight level, whether by something akin to a gas-guzzler excise tax based on power-to-weight instead of fuel consumption, and/or by imposing stricter licensing and experience requirements on those who wish to operate such vehicles.

Remember that about half of all motorcycle fatalities in Ontario are single vehicle crashes, no other vehicles involved. HOV lane use and filtering does nothing to fix that.

Of the other half of motorcycle fatalities, about half are due to rider fault. HOV lane use and filtering does nothing to fix that either.

The majority of rider fatalities are due to failure to engage the brain's self-preservation mode. Wanting to ride sans helmet is one symptom. So is wearing all the de rigeur protective gear available but then riding to such extreme degrees that not only are your chances of crashing greatly increased, but so is the probability that resultant crash forces will completely overwhelm the protection afforded by that gear.

There are a lot of good and responsible riders out there. Unfortunately there are also a lot of the other kind and they are a lot more visible. There will be scant public sympathy or incentive to help make riding "safer" for motorcycles as long as the high visibility element out there rides in a way that appears to show that they care not one bit for their own safety, let alone the safety of others.

If you don't want to wear a helmet...go for it. Increased insurance costs? A couple of cracked heads will not add much to the overall insurance rates.

Increased OHIP costs? Sure, but we live in a public health care system and have all agreed to cover everyone's choices and costs, including smokers, motorcycle racers, mountain bike riders, white water rafters and even those who choose to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. If we are worried about health care costs lets privatize the system and pay our own way just like visiting the dentist.

Religious rights vs helmet laws? If you can use the law to change the law...go for it....I don't have a problem with that. I just hope the Federal court house brings back Christmas trees after one judge had them removed without a hearing or trial just because they thought it was a Christian symbol and not inviting to other religions. I'm not religious, I just like Christmas trees at Christmas time.

This is always the fly in the OHIP ointment. Of course we want the freedom to live as we choose and if, as a consequence, we need additional medical aid it's covered out of the general pool of money. I want to mountain climb knowing I'll get a free helicopter ride off the mountain if need be. It's these tax based infrastructures that build great societies and why people clamour to come here. But a line has been drawn in the sand, again by a quasi democratic process, that restricts certain specific actions to protect people from themselves. If this MPP wants to move that line so be it. But the public has the right to push back the other way and is demonstrating sound reasons for doing so.

My wife works in the medical field, and trust me, when someone in their 20's-30's suffers a traumatic brain/head/spinal injury and is a vegetable for the rest of their lives, requires round the clock care for potentially 60-70 more years... you are talking tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to care for that person for the rest of their days.

When the average insurance policy is anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, suddenly your statement doesn't make any sense whatsoever. The same as how home insurance goes up after a rash of claims for whatever reason, the same will happen with MC insurance of a bunch of squids take advantage of helmet laws being abolished and suddenly end up as turnips. The money comes from somewhere - guess what...that'll be you and me.

I don't know what it costs to keep a person alive in vegetative state... but I question the above numbers.

It costs well over $100 grand a year to warehouse a Canadian inmate and that includes the volume discount. A boutique care facility with on call ball washing is going to be mighty pricey over the long haul.

I totally agree that people should draw a line in the sand, I just think it should be pushed WAY back. There are a lot of risks that people take that if they had to fund personally (with or without the availability of additional insurance) might not do anymore. I don't believe great societies are built on fully tax funded systems that pose no consequences on the people using it....it only creates a free rider problem that costs much more down the line for all of us.

Re: line in sand, the religious or special interest component of the ask is really what's at issue. If the MPP wanted to take a run at striking down the helmet law overall..........
Lots could be argued back and forth over our western tax burdened society. I think most of us realize it's far from perfect. Still, I would suggest quality of life factors have refugees coming toward the west not the other way around.
