Trying to find a new job - My story so far...

Starting your own business is tough, but can be done. Just look around how do oyu think many of the small to mid sizes businesses you deal with got there. I agree fear is the biggest factor that keeps me from taking the plunge, I seemyself doing much better in a partnership versus on my own, that being said it woudl have to be a well thought out decision who I work with and who works with me.

LMAO! You could do that if you started bacj in the 80's. Now, good luck to even getting your feet wet. There is SO much government regulation that you'll surely fail in your first year if running a company.

I know of many successful businesses started in the last 10 years.

A lot of people think partnerships are good, but they actually make you go down. I would not do a partnership under any circumstance.

Weren't you the same guy who was interested in a partnership not too long ago???

unsure about that, I have seen many work but I do agree much more thought has to go into it along with a clear understanding of what each partner needs to do. That being said I woudl never work with family or friends, that always ends bad..

Maybe with a family member, but that's also iffy. I'm more interested in retirement or doing a second career. Feel so under challenged right now.

Trust me when I say it's hard. When you have to divide up money the conservation is I did x more than you or why are we making the same when I'm putting in more hours than you etc... Difference of opinions etc... Remember in any business there can only be one leader. It might work for mid size businesses doing 1mill+ that have a lot more room to float partners, but not for small business. Also, why share when you can work hard and keep everything!

I don't know I consider myself a good partner choice, I have well trained problem solving skills and enjoy the team atmosphere. I am not greedy by any means but I expect everyone to pull their weight. I lead by example even when no one is watching. If you want to put me to the test feel free to do so you will not be disappointed. ;)

Yeah, but look at it like this. I can do all this myself so why should I get a partner? If I can do it all and keep the profits that's even better! Working for yourself means yourself and not anyone else.

I don't doubt your views but mine are different. The thought of doing something and sharing the experience and wealth, to me sounds great. I am sure like any decision there is always good and bad.

Oh no another running man...

Anyways, back on track here. Start my day as I usually do, up at 5am deal with the dogs get the wife up then hit the job market. Starting to notice a trend. Many companies post there job through agencies, these agencies hire people to post said jobs, screen applicants and set up interviews etc. (or so I assume) now I'll go out on limb here and say that the jobs I am applying for have a higher pay grade than the person I am dealing with to get said job through the agency. I have noted so many spelling and format errors, zero call backs and when I do get them I deal with a person 10+ years younger than me that clearly has issue with what their role requires them to do. So all this got me thinking, what to start a business how about a job agency that actually gives a damn about filling their clients needs? Not only do I see the poorest written job ads many of them are months old and yet still have errors in them, I guess it a two way street the client not checking and the agency not caring.. I have always been interested in this market as it seems to be lacking when it comes to drive and sucess, at least where I ma concerned.

Ok, end rant...

Yes, it's a frustrating process. You have to know that there are ads out there that are just for placement agencies doing some fishing. They are trying to grow their database of skills so that when a client is looking for someone, they are ready, they need to get people in quickly becasue they too are competing to place the spot. Getting on a headhunters list will not necessarily get you a job in the near future, can take a while. I'm booked solid right now, and have to turn work down, wtf was all this when I needed it!

If you are not getting replies, it might be due to huge competition from some more generalist type positions. Focusing on a smaller set of skills in your searches might help, I compete on one software package, one platform, and I do well. In my field, going after "networking" or "web development" means competing with 1/2 the IT workforce, and dick all replies.

Best of luck.

Ha agreed, it has always been like that for me. I am in a niche market but many of my skills can be used in many businesses. I guess my frustration is just the lack of motivation or so it appears to me. I agree there is always competition but as it stands I am getting less than 1% return on my investment. Funny I am taking classes to continue my education and many people in the class are out of work and have been for years all of them in the I.T. field (which is not the field I am in) I sat there in the beginning and wondered how can someone be out of work for years!?! I am now starting to see the frustration of job hunting in Southern Ontario, we simply have an overkill of resources and I feel many companies are simply looking for the "cheapest" not the "best" suited person for the position. I could be wrong mind you, but it sure feels that way from where I am standing.

Have you notice how rude some of the agencies can be sometimes?

Another tip might be stay away from workopolis & monster. I've never gotten a response from those jobs. Try elutta & going directly to co. websites

Agreed, seems like they are hiring the least qualified people to look fo the most qualified. I use every resource I can, as it stands I spend about 4+ hours a day looking for a new job, following up on leadds and making new contacts. My favorite agency situation.

Agency Person - "so basically Mr. Jampy00 our client is look for someone who is honest and has a strong work ethic along with a high level of integrity"

Jampy00 - "sounds great I have all those aspects, with proven results to back them up"

Agency Person - "So are you currently employed?"

Jampy00 - "Yes"

Agency Person - "I guess you would have to give notice then if you decided to leave?"

Jampy00 - Thinks "WTF?"

It makes me laugh, it seems being employed is a bad thing when you're looking for new employment or a employment change...

> Agency Person - "I guess you would have to give notice then if you decided to leave?"

What if you had said "no, I can start immediately"?
Perhaps with that question they were testing your honesty and level of integrity.
They might not be as clueless as it may appear.
