track noob questions

Op. Buy a 1 piece. I have never met anyone regretting getting a 1 piece. I have met lots of track riders regretting getting a 2 piece because they end up getting a 1 piece anyways....

I know how you feel about jumping in because the upfront cost is huge but take our word, you will like it. And as long as you're not overly big/small you can easily sell the suit after if you decide you don't like track days (not gonna happen).

I was starting from scratch this year after not even sitting on a bike for 10 years & never having been on a track before & I agree with all the above, get a 1 piece suit, you wont regret it & there are used ones out there on Kijiji etc if you are "normal" size.
I'm a biggish lad at 6' 2" & in the 245lbs region so I had to buy new for the leathers (nothing used would fit me) but got a good A-stars suit on sale for $450.
Helmet on sale from Royal Distribution (50% off, Snell 2010), A-stars boots & back protector on sale from Canada's Motorcycle (roughly 35% off & free shipping)
Deals are out there, especially at this time of year & there's also the motorcycle shows coming up in Toronto in January etc where you can find some good deals, I got my gloves from there.

Do get decent gear though because at some point you will need it to protect you - I crashed at GBM & jumped up without any injury to me but the gloves especially were fairly badly damaged & the leathers nicely scuffed up.

Be warned though track riding is very addictive & yes at $120-$140 per track day the costs soon mount up but what an exciting year I have had, I absolutely love this new sport & even though the bike has just been packed away for the winter after the final track day on Saturday at TMP I cannot wait for May 2016.

You can do a lot better than Velocity for less money. There's nothing wrong with off the shelf leathers, you just need to find out what brand fits your body size the best.

Custom fit suits is a gimmick and a waste of money.

and I am pretty sure Velocity is no longer making race suits

I used Velocity as an example for an expensive suit, you can insert any other manufacturers name instead, last I spoke to Jimmy he was still making custom suits along with heated gear, but that's besides the point.

So now that we've collectively decided that I need a suit, what are some of the thing I should be watching out for when shopping for one? someone mentioned to make sure the back and chest protectors fit, anything else I should be looking for? any specific brands to stay away from?

Cheers

Imo fit and comfort is what you should be considering the most. Obviously not all suits are created equal but if you stick to a known brand you should be OK.

not sure, I wear a Dainese jacket in 56(loose fit), and 34 pants, never tried on a suit
OK, i have a spare suit you can buy for 100 bucks, it is size 46. It is rough but can be used for track days. I also am a size 34 on pants and my jackets are 56 which is 46 so it should fit

I see everyone listing all the body armour, chest, back, even padded shorts.
How come no one says Neck Brace? That'd be up there to me with the back protector.

This isn't motorcross, a neck brace would restrict your head mobility when leaning

I don't know anyone that has one, I haven't seen anyone wearing one, and I'm too cheap to pony up the $600 to try one so I can't suggest it.

The leatt neck brace specific to road racing shouldn't affect your mobility too much but that's only what I've read. People complain about restriction while wearing a chest protector but the people who are used to wearing them don't have any issues.

no neck braces because when your tumbling at 100mph, you WANT to be able to "turtle". haha. those who know, know.

When you are riding MX your head is in line with your body/spine. When you are behind the windscreen on a road bike you head/neck are in a hyper-extended position.
So it is very difficult to use.
