track noob questions

Hi Guys / girls

I just bought a track bike for next season and have a question about gear, is leather a must or will I be allowed to ride with a leather / textile jacket, and leather pants? I realize a suit is the way to go, but I would like to try it out for a season with minimal investment to decide if its for me.

Cheers

Max

You won't be allowed out there without full leather zip together gear at least.

thank you

I read the sticky advice threads, lots of good information there, thank you to the people who wrote them.

any other advise you guys / girls can offer will be appreciated

You won't be disappointed

Get a second Job, you gonna need the extra money lol

On a serious note, both guys on top of me on this thread have broken ribs as recent as this year, I have had my share of crashes as well, last one as recent as 2 weeks ago, your first instinct might be to save some money on gear but that is the last place you should save on.

I hear you about the extra money part

not really trying to save money on gear as much as I'm trying to see what I can reuse from my collection of street gear

You can probably re-use your helmet, everything else you will need to replace unless you've already bought max protection gear for the street.

Post what you own right now if you want opinions.

Jacket - I have a leather Teknic jacket that I have not used in a while with built in armour
Boots - Sidi, don't remember the model, but they are a full height boot, with ankle and shin protection
Gloves - Velocity VR-Pro
Pants - need to buy
Back protector - need to buy

Jacket - I have a leather Teknic jacket that I have not used in a while with built in armour- Make sure the pants you buy can be zipped to the jacket 360, if not you will be required to buy another jacket and pants that go together or a 1 piece suit
Boots - Sidi, don't remember the model, but they are a full height boot, with ankle and shin protection - Good
Gloves - Velocity VR-Pro - Excellent
Pants - need to buy
Back protector - need to buy - Make sure the back protector fits inside whatever jacket/suit you end up with, number one mistake new riders do is buying a suit ithout taking into account that the back protector has to go inside
....

10-4 thanks

a 2pc suit is the most versitile. If you get really into it, then you'll upgrade anyways and can get a 1pc then.

Just an FYI - At Mosport (CTMP) this year, Sandy advised everybody at the riders meeting that a 2-piece with the stretch panel connection at the 360 zipper will not be acceptable. Leather to Leather zipper or a 1 piece or you aren't getting on the track with Pro6 for 2016 season.

Honestly, IMO people should just get a 1 Piece but I understand budget constrains... The way I look at it, if you can't afford a used 1 piece, you shouldn't be getting into the sport, specially when you can probably turn around and sale the suit close to the same price if you decide track is not your thing.

I'm going to suggest padded shorts and a chest protector be added to your gear.

I still can't believe people ride without these items.

Agreed. But people should always check for used stuff if they don't know if they want to get new stuff.

OP, what are your sizes? I personally have 2 sets of full leathers, 2 sets of integral back/chest protectors, and 3 sets of chest of protectors that would be good if I sold them.

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated

as I said before, im not really trying to save money on gear but trying to make sure this is for me before jumping in with both feet, I dont want to buy a used suit on kijijji, then realize mid season that i absolutely love track riding and go see Jimmy at Velocity for a custom made suit, I know may be able to sell it to someone else but its more likely that it will be collecting dust in my basement.

I just dug up that Teknic jacket I was going to use and it only had a small 8" zipper to connect the pants, I dont imagine its good enough for the track, so what are my options? can I take it anywhere to get altered? or is it destined back to the basement to collect more duct?

Bakaboy - I wear a size 54 jacket, waist fluctuates from 32" to 34" depending on the time of year, 5'10" and 190lbs at the moment but have been known to get up to 200 and down to 175....

Cheers
