Maybe this is a stupid question, but why don't the cabbies get hooked up on this Uber stuff ? Fight fire with fire etc.

Because Uber has a rating system and if you go under a certain number youll be fired. These cabbies wont last a day with uber with their crazy angry attitudes lol

Retail Stores had to and continue to adapt because of new technologies and many people have lost their jobs because of it, for some reason cabies think they are the only ones affected by technology.

If they are not competitive to Uber prices then they need to adjust their prices.
If they can't because of the fees they pay then the fees need to be adjusted accordingly
If the fees can not be adjusted because of certain legislation then the legislation needs to change

All part of a free market economy. It sucks for them because they are losing their revenue during the adjustment period but maybe the entire cab industry should have realized what was coming and react accordingly instead of letting the customers pay up the roof for these ridiculous fairs.

Hell of an idea lets just deregulate everything that the city charges license fees for and send a good chunk of the profits overseas.
Not that I'm a big fan of cabbies but whats next everyone who wants to can open a restaurant in their basement without any inspections or anything just because they want to?

Would you go to a restaurant in a basement? Wouldn't it kind of be self regulating?

I do not agree with their tactics but they are frustrated to no end with the lack of support by local government. Yes I am in the industry. Everyone should read this article on how Uber is able to collect the fee for your ride and take the money and pay no taxes to Canada. They basically just suck the money out of our pockets and take it offshore.

http://www.troymedia.com/2015/12/08/how-uber-dodges-paying-taxes-in-canada/

Please don't make me laugh.
So we need to ban Uber because of the taxes?

Uber is here to stay, period.

I agree that the government has to intervene and legislate, our laws and by-laws never took into consideration these business models, BUT... banning Uber is going to be as easy as banning the internet (in other words, impossible).

Sure, I've broken some serious bread in church basements. I think it's doable. Uber underground.

You must have understanding issues, can you quote where I said the city should deregulate everything that is licensed? The specific quote please and not your piss poor interpretation.

They can't adjust their fees, it is set by the city. How can they be competitive if they have license fees, higher insurance, and the city tells them how much they have to charge. The city needs to level the playing field, either by making uber pay the same license fees, have commercial insurance , or by letting the cabbies have regular insurance, set their own fees and not be licensed. The cabbies went about it the wrong way by inconveniencing the people that are potential customers. This will backfire on them big time.

I thought these guys were all doctors and engineers?

I think my last cabbie I had was an engineer. When I puked in the back seat he made a bolt for the door.

They cannot change their prices.
It's fees, license and insurance.
they tried, but no one wants to change the legislation to level the field.

these are the reasons they are so frustrated. They are in a no win situation. Tory needs to do his job and level the field.

Sounds like a machinist. Last taxi driver I had was an Optometrist, made a spectacle of himself.

How bad are the cab fees? $648 https://www1.toronto.ca/wps/portal/...nnel=4f687f26e4d41410VgnVCM10000071d60f89RCRD

What's the insurance rate for a cabbie? $2k to $3k more than a regular driver? If you take the extra insurance and fees and divide it over the year with amount of rides they give it should be minimal per ride, but they charge 40% more than uber.

They are being bullies and the physical threat of violence is insane. These guys should be charged.

In defense of the cabbies, the whole cab system is set up in regulated and set up in such a way that it fails against disruptive unregulated competition, as what Uber is.

The rates are municipally set, they have to 'rent' those cab medallions from investors that see them only as income and don't really care about the cab driver, and they have to pay for all the upkeep of their cars and pay a ton of money in commercial insurance. It's the cab drivers that are suffering at the hands of uber, and they really have no tangible way to fight back.

I'm not a fan of cabs and I'm not a Uber user. I either, walk, take transit, ride my bike or take my car...

I've been reading items here and there and this is what I am also seeing. They have no real way to fight back against uber. Uber is the one who is operating illegally in a regulated industry.

Lets keep that in mind that last statement, Uber is illegally operating in a regulated industry. Lets just say that your a doctor. Some company comes up with a new way of non-medically medically assisting people cheaper then a current doctor (say private helathcare) but is 'technically' not helping them since they are just doctor-patient sharing technology company. And the pseudo-doctor is not required to be a doctor since he's not technically a licensed medical practioner but still 'assisting' in some way. how would that fly ?

Chiller, that's not a very good example because doctors are only a part of the equation. You still have prescriptions, drugs, hospitals, other care givers, etc.

Gartner keeps predicting that machines and software agents will take over many tasks in the short term future. http://www.gartner.com/smarterwithgartner/gartner-predicts-our-digital-future/

So, if we could have an artificial intelligence pseudo-doctor that gives medical advice, and diagnosis, and suggest treatment, etc. for cheaper than a human doctor, that would be fantastic. Would human doctors be disrupted? You bet.

But you could still NOT get treatment, unless the pseudo-doctor could give you a prescription.

But what would be wrong with having the alternative of an artificial intelligence pseudo-doctor that could give prescriptions, and would be cheaper than a human doctor?

Except that it's not illegal. I totally get why the cabbies are angry but IMHO it's misdirected at Uber.
