To sellers of Bikes

Back to the email comment.

I do always put in my phone number, but do specify the "prefer emails" which is forwarded to my phone. Much less intrusive responding - in a prompt manner - rather than immediately having to take a call for general information. After all, the add is posted electronically so it rather makes sense that prospects use the readily available email link rather than picking up the phone.

Yes, get a few "I'll give you __ and pick up today" responses. They're funny as sometime I'll just bail on a bike and don't care too much about price, and in agreeing to something of similar (if not the same) dollar value, don't get a follow up.

The funniest though is will you take __ today cash, they show up 2 days later with a deposit ...

I sold a Corolla last year. 10 grand firm, it was my mother's car.

The phone calls were ridiculous. Older Indian gentlemen just don't understand a firm price. I get it. It's cultural. But it's also my nature to stand firm.

Few buyers showed up with 1000, 500 or even 200 short. Cash price they say, I say yes and the price is 10G. I sent at least a dozen away.

I agree with the showing up short of a firm price and trying, but don't get mad when it doesn't work either.

I used to do 1/4 page ads in heavy equipment Trader every week and it worked great until Trader pushed online vs magazine. Electronic ads are way more difficult for all the reasons above. We make the ad clear and full of info that you know they will ask, just think of what you would want to know, and give a 800 number to call. This sorts out any other BS that hasn't been covered. I'm paying for the call and when some A -hole is unreasonable I can and do hang up! I've even had them phone back asking if I really did that (hurt his feelings, mom wouldn't do that) and I politely tell them I can't help them. You'd be surprised how that sorts out tire kickers and real buyers. Obviously this doesn't happen often but you have no other option sometimes. The best thing we have is a debit/credit card terminal that makes up their mind pretty quick. It's not as good as cash, and doesn't apply to most here, but boy does it ever cut to the chase . Most deposits will not go through first time. Plus you get paid up front ,before you even leave, and if you get screwed around at delivery just bring her back until new arrangements are made. I guess if you have a fair price and lay out all the good and bad at the start you've gone a long way to get a decent buyer.

I am with KLR I dont post my number use to but got tired of jerkoffs. If you cant get off your *** to come look at whatever then negotiate I dont want to hear your offer. When I used to get calls as soon as I here I will give you ....... I just hangup no goodbye no answer just click. Best part is when they would call back, I dont know what happened we were disconnected. I will give you ........ Click :D Some idiots would call back three or four times. Now I just trash the emails I wont even respond. I love when they use CASH. :) What do you think it will be twit? I dont know you it will always be CASH. I have a mountain of stuff that I could sell but dealing with these morons is tiring. Maybe when I retire Hahaha
This "its a cultural thing" response is old. This isnt whatever culture your talking about so respect my culture and stop being a tool.

In my experience the idiot buyer group and idiot selling group are equally represented.
1. ad says if the ad is up the product is still for sale...... "is it still for sale?"
2. price is firm thankyou and local pickup only........"will you take X? and meet me at address X (another city)?"
3. its mint....where did that crack and dent come from?......my kid backed the car into it
4. can my mechanic look at it? ..... yes.......will you pay for it? ......... no.........why not?
5. Can I come right now and pick it up?........... its 3am........... but I'm awake now......do you have cash?.....bank opens at 9........oh. nevermind
6. I seen three for sale in the last month for $200 less.........why didnt you buy one of those..........they wouldnt take my lower offer.......right.

and this is my kijiji experince from the last three months.

Everything is "mint", and nothing has ever been dropped. If it has been obviously dropped, it's just on the driveway.
#1 reason to sell bike (why do people think they need to justify a reason?): "no time to ride".

I love the notion of 'mint'. Selling a mint fully working TV that "doesn't turn on and just needs some part replaced"...

I apologize for my people.

If it's a cultural thing then go do it in their own culture. This is our culture and most of us are sick of the stupidity when trying to buy or sell anything. Firm doesn't mean waste my time

Seeking a decent Bandit or Katana.

Just wondering how much you were willing to spend?

I don't have a Bandit or Katana to sell, but I did try and sell a bike last Fall. My ad was pretty detailed and had good pics, (- I guess my asking price was too high because it didn't sell).

In my experience, I found a lot of buyers had unrealistic expectations when it came to price...

Yes, the word "mint" is overused to the point it's now meaningless. I was just looking at a CBR600RR on Kijiji that's apparently "mint". It also has a ticking noise coming from the engine.

Tip: if the seller is too stupid to write a decent ad, and cannot be bothered to take decent pics, ignore the ad. It's a symptom of bad judgment and laziness that likely means the bike was abused. There is a lot of junk on Kijiji, it was much better when Autotrader used to charge for ads, because you got serious sellers.

This. Can't put up a decent ad, imagine them trying to perform maintenance and the like.

Also I guess I haven't dealt with too much shadiness because I've only bought two cruisers in my time. first was a learners bike and a hassle free sale to a friend who wanted to get into it (took no loss other than money put into maintenance over one summer, and she even sold it for more!) and current bike, the man was selling it for his wife who wanted a harley, and he's got two a harley and some other toys so i figured it's been well taken care of!

This all goes along with all the advice I give to people buying bikes...you can only guage the bike condition so far - you have to learn how to guage the seller first.

Has anyone ever 'agreed' to sell something stupidly cheap and then given the wrong address just to waste the person that's lowballing's time? I've thought about giving the address down the street then watching through the window and giggling my butt off. Yeah it's a ****** thing to do, but it would teach them a lesson.

Would they even be smart enough to know why that was done to them?

Definitely! Done it a few times. Only to the really douchy ones, but it's worth it

That's a pretty douchey move on your part.

Why? When some inbred twat can't be bothered to read the ad, can't be bothered to see the item for sale before negotiating, thinks that the rest of the world is actually stupid enough to think that an email offer is a real offer, offers well below asking and incidentally offers well below what the item would be worth on its worst day, and generally is a big enough ****stick to insult me with the usual "I've seen some for hundreds less"? Sorry you fell for it, try to be a respectful buyer next time, genius

When you put up an ad on the internet, you will have to face a lot of time wasters and dreamers. It does not take a lot of your energy to delete the email or simply reply with a "no thanks". Be the bigger person, not the bigger tool.

Nah. Read the post again, this tactic is saved for the real bad ones. I have a quality of life worth protecting, so forceful vacuum demonstrations, water treatment systems sales people, and raging time wasters need to be dealt with. Feel free to be passive in your life, but don't patronize me. These are the same exact people that don't show when they say they will, or show up with no intention on paying.
