TMP - June26th Video

Damn Reed, you're quick!
In session 5 I thought I was doing well, but I held you up just as much as everyone else.

At least I got to see my BP a little on video. [Session 5 @4:45-6:00]
Looks like i'm tucking in my elbows (was not aware of that until now).

I see what you mean about straight line speed on the SV though.

The only pass I found questionable was when I (and a few others) were piled up going into 6 [referring to ~5:54 in the session 5 video] and you went down on the inside past myself and a few others.
I was at the back of that group you passed, and it looked like you spooked the last guy you passed a little.

Besides that, from watching the videos, it looks like all your passing was done with respect for the other riders.

Glad you are moving up, it's no fun when you hit traffic in the middle of a killer lap. See you out there!

Thanks, Kelvyn. :) I definitely got some good footage of you... If you want the 1080 versions just bring some large type of storage device to the track next time we are both going. I bring my netbook with me.

You look good on the bike most definitely and I think you've got a lot of speed to find if you're willing to unleash the potential of the bike a bit more. Your body position is your strong suit in my opinion.. so I don't think you have much to fear about causing yourself to crash due to lean angle.. Going through turn 1 you are looking pretty good, you just gotta attack the inside of some of those other turns.. you will be able to get on the gas a little earlier.. that is how I am catching you.. try to stay outta the big bumps and I bet you will take a good 5-10 seconds off your time without even putting yourself at any more risk. Just try and crank the confidence up a notch because you look ready to take it up a notch. :)

Awesome :) I'll definitely bring a portable HDD or something next time.

Thanks for the kind words Reed :) I may be slow, but at least I look fast ;)

The three things I want to focus on now are:
1. Left hand turns. - At the end of the 26th, I was just starting to become more comfortable in them. I was actively trying to copy my body positioning that I use in RH bends, in the left ones.
I think i'm actually just going too slow (ie. really slow) right now through them to use such an aggressive BP, so I subconsciously hold back and stay on the bike to hold my line. Still haven't touched that LH knee puck.
Need to pick up the pace there and I think i'll be able to get off the bike similar to the RH bends.

2. Smoothness - I got the hang of hard braking and blipping smoothly on the 26th (no slipper clutch). I'm already pretty smooth on the gas.
I need to be smoother moving around on the bike (changing body positions), and with the other inputs in general.

3. Also need to keep the weight off my hands under hard braking. I seem to stay light on the bars everywhere except on the brakes.

After i've got those covered, i'll start paying more attention to lines, and picking up speed by getting on the gas sooner. Towards the end of the day, Dave was telling me to get on the gas sooner (starting 1/2 a bike length before) and going from there.
During my last session I worked on that a little, and could visually see my efforts in the tire wear!

I sold off some extra street fairings I had and bought a set of warmers.
Just using Dave's spare set for half a day, I felt way more confident in my tires.
Consistent tire feel from the first lap and throughout the entire session goes a long way confidence wise.

Not sure when i'll be able to track next. I've got a brutal summer class until early August, so I might not make it out until after that.

See you out there!

Left handers are my worst enemy, as indicated by my lowside last track day... Everything feels so natural on rights, the body positioning, foot positioning, hand positioning on the bars etc... it all just works on rights. We should both do a backwards track day and if we haven't crashed by lunch I'm sure the knowledge gained will be invaluable.

Good luck with the warmers too, unfortunately they are not in my budget for this year being my first year on the track so I'll have to live vicariously through you... As Reed mentioned you have the tools and know how, just need to attack the corners with a bit more speed. I wouldn't say to brake later to go faster but work on entry speed into the corners, try carrying more speed throughout the turn, your bike can handle it!

Would be a good thing too to get a baseline suspension set-up done if you haven't already. My rear shock was completely maxed out (or opposite of that depending on how you want to look at it) with 0 preload from the previous owner wanting a plush ride... ******... Don had to hammer the adjustment ring for about 5 minutes just to get a reasonable sag setting. To be completely honest, as I only did one session EVER prior to having the suspension adjusted, I didn't notice a major difference. The mental aspect of it was what really benefitted me, knowing that all you hear is "suspension, suspension, suspension, set-up is so important at the track". Understanding I had a good baseline was enough for me to push it a little more and understand that myself and the bike can handle a little quicker pace through different sections...

whatya waiting for post it already!! lol :p

Here ya go! Hope you don't mind, did a little picture in picture with your video for the added veiwing pleasure. Not too good of an angle from my bike but caught some of the crash. No music either, didn't wanted to add some in, wait forever for it to upload only to find out youtube doesn't like my tunes... Was definitely getting some confidence back in this session, ran my best lap times. I know there's still tons of time left out there, just have to figure out where, any suggestions?

My interpretation is I could brake later in 1, carry more speed through 2/brake later, work on lines through 6 to avoid the bumps (hate that corner), and try braking later(through the chicane possibly) prior to left handed turn 8.

I had my suspension setup at my first TD with Racer5. Noticed a LOT less diving under braking and the bike felt better in general. My rear spring is still way too stiff for my weight, but that won't be an issue until I get faster.

You're looking great out there! From your video I can see how much speed you're carrying through the corners, and the lines through some of my trouble spots.

I found a new spot to mount my camera, so hopefully my videos won't be total **** next time :)

Nope, I sent him a 3rd email this week. I guess he doesn't want my money?

Yeah I think Tim may have packed it in... I talked to him on fb and asked if he was going to send the pictures of a friend, his reply was that he was very busy with the new job (not photography related) and would send the images as soon as he could. I also mentioned that there were a few guys on GTAM that were asking for the images and to check the forum.
So if someone wants to make a few bucks there might be an opening for a photographer on the GWB and Racer5 Days... there was nobody there taking pictures on Thursday.

Thanks for mentioning that to him, totally understand this isn't his full time gig and sometimes people move on. It's always nice to get some nice high-res images from a day of lapping though. Hoping for the best.

Your left elbow is tucked in, try sticking your left elbow out on your next track day and let us know what happened. Trust me on this one. day and night

Definitely sweet with the Picture in Picture. Good video Justin, you're looking solid out there, now. I definitely need a new ride, haha.

and in no way do i pretend to give advice, someone else got this same advice fromma competent source and I used it on myself to fix a coouple of issues, as you can see from my avatar I still suck *** on my body positioning.
