Tinted/smoked visors at night?

Can't see s.h.i.t. with my tinted on my shoei out in the boonies at night.

In the city it's not that bad, but still it decreases my vision.

I have friends that ride tinted all the time everywhere and don't have an issue.

I usually have my clear with me if I know i'll be out past sunset.
 
I ride with a shoei cw1 spectra shield and I don't live in the city. At night it's not bad but still not the brightest thing to use. My dark smoked one is out of the question. Even with high beams on it's hard to see.

This is what I do if I'm get caught out in the dark. Although if I plan to ride at night, I'll throw on the clear visor before I leave.
 
My helmet has an internal snap-down visor. Best of both worlds. I don't think I would even consider a helmet without one now.. Multiple tint options for both visors internal and external, so you can mix and match to find the best combination for you.
 
I bought a helmet with a sunshield built in, flips up when I don't need it. I never liked wearing sunglasses inside my helmet. I do love the look of tinted visors, but don't like carrying a spare clear one, and driving blind claiming I can see is not an option for me. The sunshield is the perfect solution IMO.
 
As the latest posts have said, the helmets with built-in shades are a godsend on this topic. You never have to worry about bringing an extra shield in case you end up riding late.
I own one of these helmets and it just makes that part of my life easier. I am one of those people who hate wearing sunglasses so that was not an option I was considering.

Problem is a lot of the top-of-the-line helmets that people love to go after don't come with built-in shades because they are more sport/track oriented and the manufacturers figure the rider will put on the right visor for the job. Adding a built-in shade system only gets in the way of ultimate safety for those types of helmets.

If you carry a tankbag or some sort of luggage system while you ride, keep a clear visor in there if it fits that way if you are out longer than you thought with your friends, you aren't stuck being blind on the way home.
 
I have a Bell gradient shield that lets me see through the more clear part of it if I tilt my head backwards sligtly.

That said, the lid is probably not that dark even at its darkest cause I see fine at night. Especially on the highways where incoming headlights are sometimes so bright, I'm almost thankful for it.

Bought a pillion helmet that has the integraded shade and I'm really jealous of it. Which other helmet manufacturers have it other than HJC?
 
I've got a dark smoke visor and a gold mirror visor on my helmets. It's a tad bit easier to see at night with the mirrored visor but still not good enough to ride in areas without enough light

I am on my second HJC IS-16 Helmet with the sunshield. I commute to work and ride day & night, don't ever have to worry about swapping visors.

I love the mechanism with the spring loaded retract.
 
The bell transitions is awesome.

Unfortunately, I don't have one lol. My tinted visor is fine in city at night, but once outside the city it has to go up to see anything.

I have a Bell Revolver Evo, it has integrated sun visor and it's modular.
Bell has a photochromatic visor option for this helmet but it's kind of pointless with the built-in sunshades. I believe it's because they use the same model of visors on multiple helmets and the others don't have sunshades built in.
 
The Shoei GT-Air has one and is a pretty sharp looking helmet. Waiting for one of those to go on sale to grab!
 
Dark Visor's at night in the city/highway/well lit places are no big deal.


On an unlit road - forget about it. You will need to lift your visor up and slow the hell down. It's scary being caught in the boonies with only a dark visor.
 
For those using the sunshield visor helmets, how is the airflow in the helmets? Does "flip down" sunshade create poor venting?
 
I just bought a Scorpion EXO-400 and switching visors with it is a breeze. Takes me 10 seconds, even while wearing the helmet. I ride a lot with the dark smoke visor and nighttime in the city doesn't bother me. Have yet to get stuck with it out in the country but my jacket has a spot for a spare visor so I just keep my clear one in there should I ever really need it.

Though it's the first time I've heard that it's illegal to do so after sundown. Is it a HTA offense? Has anyone here actually been given **** for it?

I've just been searching for this and can't find any reference to it being illegal. Does anyone KNOW different?
 
I have a clear visor in the trunk. Had to pull over a couple of times after a Burrito to change it.

Edit:
I've been pulled over while wear prescription sunglasses at night.
I showed the officer my broken regular glasses and he let it slide.
I'm sure they could charge you with something, if they're pulling you over for something else.
