Tim Hortons in Oshawa on Simcoe St. S - drive thru only

There is some pretty suspicious ne'er do wells milling about out front.

The news clip I saw blamed the druggies and homeless. As they were filming someone appeared to be shooting up. Add that to the risk to staff and customers, liabilities etc. Drive thru only is about the only option short of fully fencing the site and having 24/7 security stopping trespassers.

A homeless guy, looking for a washroom, came into a fast food place I was at and he smelled so bad some people left.

I can envision panhandlers looking for spare change at the drive thrus.

When we did the Trent-Severn and Rideau we only went to Smith's Falls. We were told that boats the moored along the canal in Ottawa would wake to panhandlers sleeping next to the boats. Made people think about what they left on deck.

Drive thru only , eliminate public washrooms which are a huge pain for fast food joints . Or have a walk up counter inside with no seating to cater to pedestrians and cyclists. Probably no drop in sales .

Unfortunately, a lot of truckers and travelers don't have the option of a washroom down the hall. When they closed the service centres on the 401 during peak Covid they were crapping between the trailers.

I was an on road sales guy for decades , you never stop at a Tim’s or other for a dump , you pull into a nice hotel , better parking and never a line at the lobby bathroom. And nice paper. Sometimes cologne.

Agreed, seat is always sweaty at Tim's and McDonald's. Yuck...

Has anyone been in the new stripey mcdonalds? I don't like them but service is faster. They increased kitchen size and decreased seating. Some have a separate entrance for delivery drivers to keep them away from seated customers.

Years ago I worked for awhile on Bloor St just east of Simcoe. That whole area was really sketchy even then. Lots of druggies and other down & outers. Methadone clinic, which was always really busy, and a few halfway houses in that area. From Bloor north to King Street; Simcoe Street is not the place you wanna be!

You must be talking about the Timmies in Orillia. Drive thru and counter only. No seats, no washrooms.

There's actually quite a few Timmies like this. When you are on the road all the time and sometimes it's the only option for a warm "coffee" (in quotes for a reason) and a bite to eat, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Ol 'Douggie promised to introduce a law that required shippers and receivers to provide bathrooms to commercial drivers. As someone in the industry, I can confirm that this never happened, and to this day a lot of places still won't let drivers use the bathroom. At least fast food places are an option again in most circumstances now, although I'm still surprised at how many places have basically permanently closed their bathrooms with "sorry, out of order" signs that have clearly been there for months/years.

I'll add Douggies promise about that law to his list of broken promises.

There's actually quite a few Timmies like this.

There was one that was basically a 15'x15' kiosk with drive thru windows on both sides on the east side of Waterdown on 5. It got upgraded to a double set back farther from the road with a walk-in counter around '05. That is gone now. The entire east side of town has been gentrified.

There's one in Cobourg on Division street at a gas station like that as well, basically just a walk in with a lobby and no seats, you take your food out. Separate from the gas station, but yeah, order and GTFO.

IIRC the one in the south end of Orillia on Highway 12 is like this as well.

IIRC Macdonalds started here with walk in only, no seating just take out. The one on Queen st in Brampton was like this early 70's. I can remember when they expanded, adding seating and later on a drive through.

There's one like that at King and Dundurn in the Hammer.

Then again, it ain't OG unless there's a sliding screen. Last one of it's kind. It's down the road from me in Aldershot.

The only reason I knew this Tim Hortons existed is that I've been told if you go there late you can pick up a prostitute in the parking lot. (Un)fortunately I haven't verified these claims myself however.

I do volunteer work at The Canadian Automotive Museum just up the street from that Tim Hortons in Oshawa, it’s super sketchy. About two or three years ago another volunteer went in to get a coffee. When he came out his car had been keyed the whole length of the drivers side and the crackhead that did it was standing there waiting for him to come back and say something. I guess that’s what crackheads do for fun in The Shaw.

The CAM is on my must see list. I'll keep parking in mind. Add the above to the list of things that will discourage tourism and entrepreneurs. But hey, look at those shiny new Not Dundas Street signs, several on every corner.

Entrepreneurs, if your restaurant folds because the government can't out think a druggie, gear up for the upcoming opportunity, recycling and reprinting megatons of stationery and literature.

Surprised CAM hasn't tried to find another location, not really ideal to take a family there for a visit when across the street memorial park is full of homeless/addicts.

Harwood road Tims in Ajax isn't much better either.

Do you remember the conveyor belt that brought the food from the kitchen, over the lobby and to the drive thru?

Have a tourist attraction. A fast food place opens nearby to cater to the traffic, transients move in. rinse repeat. What is the real problem?

Do drugs lead to homelessness or does homelessness lead to drugs to ease the suffering.

I had a shot of morphine 40+ years ago to get me through a kidney stone issue. It could have been addictive but I had a wife, family, house and a kid on the way. What's the incentive for someone to get clean now? Want a wife or kid that you can't feed or house?

Family? Some of the homeless have family so where's the support, warm bed etc. Who instigated the separation?

Did the parents raise a self centred brat and now can't live with their output or were the parents control freaks?

More theories than solutions.

Solution to addiction, I don’t know. One of my best friends got clean, married with two kids and one lapse and overdosed himself. Had all the love he needed but once an addict always an addict. He very well could have ended up on the streets and homeless if he didn’t TKO himself.

All I can say if I had young kids I wouldn’t be taking them anywhere near that museum.

Some would say that exposing them to the ugly stuff would scare them straight. I'm not sure if I agree.

I'll take a drink but don't like being buzzed. If I'm upset the thought of drinking almost makes me sick. Nature or nurture?

Why the growth of drug addiction? It's been here forever but not to this extent.
