Thinking of replacing the Volt...looking for something more entertaining!

Is your V8 Mustang manual? Curious, what's the fuel consumption like on it. Always wanted to get a V8, but feel it's very inefficient for a daily commuter.

I decided to try auto this time.. It's my first sport car with auto transmission but I heard good reviews on it and decided to try it.. Fuel consumption? Yeah, let's say it is not very efficient. I don't remember exact numbers but I think with my driving style it is about 13.5 l for 100km. Highways do help a lot in terms of fuel efficiency..

Wow, how times have changed. When I learned to drive there Honda, Audi and GM had 1 FWD platform, no light duty AWD trucks or SUVs, we didn't have traction control, most cars lacked posi, and with the advent of 'all season radials' we didn't changeover tires.

By the time you finished high school, most of my friends could elegantly drift their dad's Torino or Cutlass through the winter snow or through curves on the rural sideroads outside the city. Without autosport advanced training.

Unfortunately, it is not the case anymore. For most people driving means "getting from A to B" and they don't want to know what to do even when there is some snow on the road.. As a result, overall driving culture went down a lot.. just look what kind of drivers around you in your daily commute. I recently saw a guy who was watching a movie on his phone while driving..

Saw 2 people make a u turn on a red yesterday. I don't mean, "just went red". Solid red light, approached intersection, u turn, carry on.

Thanks for the input guys, appreciate it. I'll post the Volt up next week and see what happens with that. Last time I had this thread I ended up with the Si thanks to the suggestions and it was a good experience. Here's hoping to something similar!

Just in case, anyone have experience with the 128i? Is it something to stay clear from? Not as powerful as the 135 for sure, but less issues from what I'm reading.

Also, how are the newer generation V6 Mustangs? Would love the V8 but might be a little overkill for our roads / my foot.

So, first of all, I would recommend only S550 generation. Just because it finally has independent rear suspension and overall nicer car IMHO. I never drove V6 or EcoBoost, but I was inside. Inside it looks almost identical to V8 and I personally like it (premium package, don't have experience with base model). I would recommend to check EcoBoost as well. It is a nice engine and has better MPG. Of course, it wouldn't be as fun as V8 but still a lot of fun : )

One more thing: I actually was considering 370z before got my mustang.. but I didn't want FWD car, so I was looking for RWD or AWD only.

EDIT:
I mean 370z is RWD and it was in my list but other cars like Si or GTI are FWD and I wasn't considering them..

Thanks for the input. I actually love the Z cars...but lack of rear seats is a tough sell. I thought the 370Z is a RWD?

Yup, 370z is RWD. I wanted to say that Si or GTI were not on my list because they are FWD.. Damn, completely forgot that 370z doesn't have back seats..

Beautiful car but totally useless in the snow...had a guy get stuck on our street and took 20min to push him out. Honestly if I buy a car like that I'm tempted to just risk buying studded tires, or buy chains that I can throw on in a pinch. We have some at work in BC and what a difference. Small studded tires, and chains on the rear wheels that can be put on/off within 5min.

Not sure about 370z but I was driving my mustang whole winter and I was surprised how capable it is. I remember once I exit the office and saw that I need to remove some snow to just open the door because it was much higher than door's bottom line.. And it was a huge surprise for me that my mustang just drove through the parking lot without issues after it. Of course, the snow was not so heavy and I have winter tires but it still was amazing. At the same time, previously I was driving STI and there are no doubts that STI would just laugh on mustang..

But don't forget that it can be really difficult to drive RWD cars in the winter, especially in slippery conditions. I personally enjoy it and it "re-charges" me after long days. For example, I was driving on a ramp from 401 express to 404 north in slippery conditions and I added just a tiny amount of gas when it was almost straight.. it was enough for my rear wheels to lose traction. It was easy to catch the car and I personally enjoyed that moment a lot. However, I can see that many people would be at least scared in such a situation. Btw, S550 mustangs have amazing traction control which allows to have fun but helps when you need it.

Basically, this is why I would recommend you to try rent a car for at least a day before you will make a decision, just to find out if it is the right car for you.

Good point. Never thought of that. I used to work for Jaguar and had some good experience driving RWD for 7-8 years which helped me a lot, and then had a Genesis Coupe 3.8 (6sp) for a few years as well and that was a great winter driving experience. Never got stuck with it. Civic Si yes...Genesis or Jag no.

If you mostly drive/live in GTA area then I think most cars should be good enough for winter (in terms that they can handle occasional snow storms). Except maybe BRZ/FRS.. You had experience with RWD, so you know the drill. Another thing to consider: will your significant other drive this car too (at all)? For example, my wife will not and shouldn't drive mustang in winter and we both agree on it.. If it is different in your case then e.g. GTI would be a much better option.

I bought a V6 Mustang last spring as I decided it was time for something 'impractical'. Back seat is a little cramped, and the car lacks the practicality I'm used to in my previous cars, but kids are grown and it really is a beautiful, fun car.
We've had 2 adults in front and stuffed our 2 grown-*** sons in the back. Screw them; they're lucky they get to drive around in a Mustang!
I've had no problems this winter with proper WINTER tires.

I noticed more than once reference was made to how much you enjoyed your old Si, I know where you are coming from, the high revving Hondas are a blast to drive and are well sorted when it comes to handling as well.

Unless you are looking for something "different", I wouldnt touch a mustang or german. Wasn't driving a lethargic Volt punishment enough?

The honda's are for more refined, great on gas, slick shifting, and reliable. still a blast to drive.

Id upgrade to the latest SI, even if you have to spend a few dollars more.

The new Si is definitely a nice looking ride but Honda can’t make a beautiful 2 door Civic IMHO at all....4 door I love though.

I want ant to try something different, and no the Volt was not punishment. It’s a very good car, but just doesn’t make excited to drive it. It’s a commuter through and through. Great at what it is, but for driving feel I want to look elsewhere.

Price is fairly fixed as all cars are paid off and I don’t want to have payments for a toy.

Don't know about GM, but Audi did the 4000, 5000, Coupe GT, 80, 90, and A4 cab in FWD.
Lol -- I'm older than you think! When I started driving the only Audi around was called the 'Fox'. I forgot Rabbits were also on the loose then.

there was an audi fox? was aware of the VW Fox, I knew a girl that had one.

I had one of those
what a total POS!

hit a bump and the front wheels turned sideways
both of them 100% toe out
that was the end of German cars for me

and it was an Audi

2 door VW Fox was the ish.
But they didn't really sell iirc. Saw maybe 5 or 6 ever in person.

Now I'm curious to see what that Audi Fox is.
