Thinking of Buying a Shoei Helmet...Is It Worth the $$

I had 2 shoei lids.rf-1000 and the tzr..the helmet is amazing. great on the highway. and I like how there not so bulky.its worth the money.

I used to wear HJC helmets then wore an RF900, now i have an x11. I find it fits MY head better and that, to me, makes it a better helmet, for ME.

I'm not brand loyal, just what fits the best. Try everything on, wear it around the store for 15-30 mins, sit on bikes, make vroom vroom noises, dance a jig, whatever you do in your helmet. See how she fits.

I see you're in Durham, swing by GP bikes, they have a sale on their Shoei's (I was there thursday, helmets on-sale are upstairs across from the Dianese section) great prices and closer than london :)

I have the Shark RSF3. It fits my head extremely well.
I have the same helmet, fits my head like a glove! After my car accident and subsequent skin graft I can only wear helmets that give me very even pressure around my head. I tried on every single brand of helmet, and the Shark and Arai were the only two that fit comfortably. So, the Shoei might not be as comfortable for your head shape, but give er a try!

imo, i like shoei. but that is because it fits my head shape. i have the rf 1100 bought from states for 500 +/- couple bucks.
i had to break my helmet in for about a week but after that its perfect.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I love my Shark RSF-3 but was curious about other options that might be better.

I have the Shoei Qwest..quiet and very comfortable..have worn horse back riding helmets all my life and find the venting is good , but wish it was more, also I have a long oval head shape and it fits me well. I also have a big head and wear the xl.

The two above posters pretty well summed it up. I have an RF1100 Hadron TC. My only complaint about it is during cold weather riding, say 6C or less the visor fogs up instantly unless you have the chin vent open enough that it blows cold air uncomfortably on your eyeballs. If you don't foresee those conditions then by all means go for it.

Pin lock visor will get rid of that fogging no problem. Come October, mine stays in at all times.

If you don't care about having the latest "design" on the helmet and want to save some cash, perhaps you should look at an RF1000. Plenty of new ones to be had on ebay for CHEAP. It's pretty much the same helmet as the 1100. The biggest difference between the they changed venting system on the rear. Reviews of the change that i've read are pretty mixed.

Well I think it's also 100G+ heavier because RF1100 meets the Snell M2010 standards, right?

Shoei rocks! i have mine for 3 years now and its awesome. My next helmet will be Shoei as well :)

I firmly believe in buying a premium brand to protect my noggen, but the Shoei v Arai debate wont be solved via online poll. Go and try them on.

GP Bikes had did a buy-in on a few Shoei models 3 weeks ago, leading up to a massive sale. Call them, maybe they have some left.

The RF1100 is completely different than the RF1000, sorry. New shell shape and design, improved ventilation, larger eye port, new shield design and self adjusting base plate. About the only thing that's the same is the Shoei decal.

Shoei is a premium helmet and priced accordingly. They are not priced higher than other brands because of their "marketing". If you believe that, than I'll sell you the box my Shoei came in because obviously you have no idea how to differentiate between a premium and a lesser quality helmet. Shoei helmets are made in Japan, not China. Big difference right there. They are made in the SHOEI FACTORY, not a helmet factory that pieces together all sorts of helmets for anyone that can afford a container. It generally takes 7 days to build a Shoei helmet, with much of the construction still done by hand. Liners are hand sewn and 3-dimensional. Each liner piece has a specific place to fit in your Shoei helmet, they are not randomly sewn together and stuffed inside. Take a look through the 2011 Shoei brochure and if you read it, you'll see all these cool tidbits that explain why you pay more for a Shoei.

All that aside, if it doesn't fit you properly, don't force it. Some people have an Arai head and others a Shoei. Try on different models in the line as they all fit a bit different. Keep in mind that Shoei, Arai, Scorpion and others with a proper SNELL rating are helmets made and designed for North America.

Yes...and that's called marketing...and you are proof that it works.

Yes. I can vouch for this.

But the fit is the most important thing. If you're going top end look at shoei, soumy, arai.

Oh and bell

Love my bell star. Got the photochromatic shield so I don't have to worry about swapping... LOVE MY BELL (s).
