These E-Bikes stealing the show!

I definitely think there needs to be some laws laid out for any vehicle on the road, be it bicycle or e-bike. Had a few close calls over the years with e-bikes riding on the road, changing lanes without checking, all sorts of crazy stuff that is covered in drivers training for basic safe driving on a road. What happens if they cause me to dump my bike? They have no insurance, so I get hit, do my premiums go up? I see bicycles who demand the same space as a car on the road, but then go right through stop signs, or at a red light, look both ways and then head through on their merry way. I see this in Kitchener, I cannot even imagine what it would be like in a big city like Toronto.

Just started e-biking this year(the scooter style), got a good deal from a drunk guy for his e-bike, I negotiated based on it having a crack on the body panel and it missing the back storage pod.

The one I have sucks going up hills, I have to get good decent fast downhill max speed if I am going to make it up a hill at a decent pace.

They are supposed to be/legally limited to 32km/h

I see some e-bikers and for the most part they more or less go around that speed. It is hit and miss for e-bikers, I find some of them follow the rules and some don't. I understand where all y'all complaints are coming from. So far I haven't been called any names or insulted while riding as I follow the rules share the road/bike lane, use turn signals and stop at stop signs, red lights etc.

The amount of ppl that look haggard and looked like they have had DUIs using e-bikes is high!

Honestly since getting an e-bike, I have been lazy as hell. my poor regular conventional bicycle is sitting outside, chain rusted and spider webs on it, lol.

The only thing that sucks about the e-bike I got is the battery range isn't that good. But then again I get what I pay for.

Also as for e-bikes that go 70, did a search on kijiji found this:

E bikes shouldn't go anywhere near that speed. I thought they were limited to 35? Either way they shouldn't be allowed on the road without insurance just like the rest of us

We have far too much regulations and bylaws in Ontario nanny state as it is. No need for more. Soon you will need a permit to walk down the street.

IMO they should have to have insurance.
Not for themselves or for their bikes but for the pedestrians they are hitting more frequently.

If you don't like the nanny state, move to Florida.
This is Canada, and when ****tards do stupid things on ebikes or GSXRs, its the taxpayer that has to pay for someone to wipe their ***** for the next 30 years.

They are scooters, they should be just classified as scooters. Easy.

In the late 70s during the gas crisis, everybody ran out and bought scooters (no license, insurance) and the carnage was insane until they regulated them like motorcycles.

Sad state of affairs. People need to be regulated. Escooteristi more so. I went to a lawyers office once. I couldn't help but notice a huge book shelf taking up most of one wall. It got me to thinking, that's like a thousand bibles right there. The ten commandments are a start but we something with teeth. Regulate the ****ers! It's no wonder our betters think we're dirt.

This is a $6000 electric mountain bike, they are being sold for "off -road use only" but they have enough power to propel lazy a-holes to 60km/hr. They are causing big problems on mountain bike trails, and this genius just ran a red light.

So yeah, we need nannies when grown 40 yr old men behave like toddlers.

Severed finger, massive internal injuries, bad head injury, if he lives, taxpayers are on the hook for hundreds of thousands or more.

You want to have a bond fire? Permit.
You want a dog or a cat? get a pet license or you will get a ticket.
You want to have a beer in the park or on the beach? no your not responsible enough.. here is your ticket
These are just the ones the come to mind now. Lots more Nanny state rules that stop this place from being a truly great place to live in.

Its getting a bit crazy don't you think? Every time someone gets hurt we need the government to step in and protect us from ourselves. People need to be responsible for their own actions.

If I didn't have a great job, Id be long gone from Toronto.

But people aren't responsible for their own actions over and over again here......get drunk, drive and smash into another vehicle or a house.....blame the bar that sold you the drink; go to a casino and gamble your familys life savings away...blame the casino for letting you in; start a campfire in a park that gets out of control and sets fire to a forest...blame the park for letting you start a fire even though it's dry as heck.

Sorry...but when you act like an adult you get treated like an adult...guess what happens when you act like a spoilt child? Unfortunately it only takes a few idiots to ruin things for everyone else and we have more than a few idiots in our midst.

I understand your point but its a flawed system because it makes normal people break the law / by-law because they are doing regular reasonable things which would be legal in most other places in the world.

Example, I walk my Golden Retriever in the morning before work in a large field where there is no one there except other dog walkers. Most people let their dogs run off leash but we have to always look over our shoulder for the bylaw officer who rolls in once in a while. Why should we feel like criminals that are doing something illegal when no one is getting hurt?

How difficult is it to convert a regular bike to an e-bike?

Wouldn't mind taking the bike to work (18km) but all sweaty isn't a great way to start the day at the office with no showers....on the way home though would be a great workout.

Here ya go, a kit from ebay: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/48V-1000W-F-...on-EBIKE-26-/181796828070?hash=item2a53ef73a6

With a 1000w motor you should be able to go way faster than 32kph too... I've read that they are not hard to make push 55 to 60kph.

I've had this discussion many times over the years in particular about how free one feels in Asia, for example, compared to here.

In SE Asia, one has the 'freedom to'... basically do what you want, the few things are illegal you can bribe your way out of.
Here, we have the 'freedom from'... we are not free to do many things, but we are free from most other morons doing those things too.

I think there is a happy medium. The amount of things banned or that require permits here are ridiculous. Likewise... if I never left Indonesia I likely wouldn't be alive anymore.

I spend 3 months in SE Asia this winter... We experienced the same perspective.

I agree with this right here. This would be an awesome place to live if it wasn't for the idiots who ruin it for everyone else (just like always...few rotten apples).

People are NOT responsible for their own actions. That e-bike mountain bike rider will most likely survive, and then he will go and sue the driver that HE hit because the car wasn't paying attention to HIS bike coming along the sidewalk. This is the problem with this society. Has anyone noticed the sheer amount of ambulance chaser lawyer commercials being aired nowadays? It's non-stop...every channel there's more and more of these lawyers advertising their services...got hurt...SUE...SUE SUE! It is your God given right to sue anyone and everyone for anything under the sun.

We are a nanny state because the majority of the population is too stupid to take care of or think for themselves or accept the consequences of their own actions.

Just because there are a few idiots, it doesnt mean we all need to be punished and treated like children.

Im sure the guy who got hit for running a red learned his lesson. He can sue all he wants but its up to the judge to decide.

Yeah it is just the few rotten apples that ruin everything! E-bikers though seem to have it the worst as they seem to be the most shat on.

I think i'll try to put "GTAM" on my e-bike somewhere so I can hopefully not get shat on.

It is interesting that e-bikes are a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code of Canada, but not a motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act, Ontario. Unless they ride and do something criminal, it's pretty much a bicycle. They are immune to the HTA. License suspensions that are not criminally charged do not apply to an e-bike. I thought that a DUI conviction was criminal, and therefore not allowed, under Federal law, to ride an e-bike. Careless driving is not a criminal offence, but dangerous driving is.

e-Bikes are all the rage in China, and for good reason. They are inexpensive to operate, and also relatively cheap to buy. For sure they will become more popular. Change a wheel to an electrified hub, add a battery, throttle cable, and you're done. No insurance required.

Ontario Ministry of Transportation - E-bike FAQ said:
Q5: Can I operate an e-bike if my driver's licence has been suspended?

It depends on the particular circumstances that led to your licence suspension. If your licence is suspended because of a conviction that has resulted in a driving prohibition under the Criminal Code of Canada, you cannot legally operate an e-bike.
If your driver's licence has been suspended under other circumstances, you should discuss your situation with a licensed legal practitioner before deciding to operate an e-bike.

Q7: What are the penalties for riding an e-bike while drunk?
Drinking and driving a motor vehicle is a Criminal Code offence and charges are laid under the Criminal Code of Canada. Under the Criminal Code, the definition of a "motor vehicle" includes an e-bike, and anyone operating an e-bike intoxicated could be charged for impaired driving. If convicted, the offender would be subject to the Criminal Code penalties, including a fine or jail time, and a driving prohibition.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, an e-bike is not classified as a motor vehicle, so penalties for impaired driving under the Act would not apply.
