the Real Jerk, get it before its gone

I always found it better than the Real Jerk Pit, but we went many times, long, long ago, when I lived around the corner from there.

Thanks for making me furious and ruing my day, you ......you...!!

"Ed and Lily Pottinger, the husband-and-wife team who own the Real Jerk, were given a month’s notice to vacate after their longtime landlords sold the building to a company called Buckingham Properties in late December."

That's frikkin ridiculous, and criminal in my opinion.
As some of you know, i owned a place on Queen W, and had similar, actually worse, issues with my landlord, the city, you name it.
All a bunch of pirates that cater to the rich, who gives a crap about the little business man, we can move a McDonalds in here now!!
F-ing sockcuckers :protest:

I could rant for the whole afternoon, but i think i'm gonna go beat the pizz outta my heavy bag for an hour instead......

You don't serve Southwestern Cuisine at your place, do you?

Yup, used to.
There was a section on the menu called "Southwestern fare with attitude"!
And jerk chicken isn't southwestern btw.

I don't care how good or bad the food was there, i'm ****** at the fact that you can rent a place for many years, probably paid for that building, and the landlord has the balls to force you out in 30days if he feels like it.

That's a crock of crap.

Yeah 30 days is really short notice considering the developer that bought it probably isn't going to do anything with it right away.

Owners of The Real Jerk restaurant have launched an online campaign to buy more time for the Caribbean-food institution before it must close its doors — although the building’s new owner doesn’t seem prepared to budge.
Ed Pottinger and his wife Lily are asking for an extension of three to six months — instead of 30 days — to find a new location for the restaurant on Queen St. E. at Broadview Ave., which has existed for 28 years, all but five in the current spot.

“After 23 years, we felt a one-month notice is not just unfair. It’s ridiculous,” said Pottinger, who said he was encouraged to take action because of public outcry and support.
The campaign, SaveTheRealJerk.com, asks supporters to sign a petition, and share stories and memories of the restaurant’s food and company. The petition will be shipped to city council, it says.

“The Real Jerk helped to revitalize this neighbourhood. Now The Real Jerk needs our help,” reads the petition.
If the new owner doesn’t change his mind, the building — featuring the west side sunburst-in-shades mural — must be vacated by the end of the month.

I bet their lease says 30 days. Nothing unfair or ridiculous about that.

I don't disagree entirely, but it IS a bit douchey to pull that. Give them 6 months..let them find a new location and do an ad campaign to get the word out. It's just a little courtesy..

I may be callous but I call that business, the same thing as an employer terminating an employee with only government minimum severance .

On the news the previous building owner made a statement that the sale of the building was done over a year ago and the restaurant was aware and should have seen this coming or at least planned for the worse.

Popular Toronto restaurant The Real Jerk has been granted a temporary injunction that will allow the well known Caribbean restaurant to stay open for now.
Ed Pottinger and his wife Lily hired a lawyer to fight the eviction of the restaurant, which has been there for more than 20 years but was given notice to leave its long-time location at the corner of Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue over the Christmas holidays.
Restaurant manager Natalie Williams said earlier this week they were given "31 days to pack up and get out. It's unfair and not neighbourly."
The Real Jerk's owner argued he had a year-to-year lease agreement, while the property owner said it was month-to-month.
The restaurant owners asked the court to give them some more time so they can find a new location.
"If we were given extra time by the injunction, that's what we're going to focus on…give us the breathing room to check out this location, check out that location," Williams has said.

Didn't a judge just order that they can stay another year? The property owner was claiming he found an Irish pub that was willing to pay double the rent that the Real Jerk was currently paying. For an extra $6000 a month I would be trying to kick them out as soon as possible too.

Ya, I heard on the radio this morning. They got an extra year and have to pay the increased rent. They are in negotiations for a new place after that.

Instead of starting up a new thread, I thought I would ask here.
I've been on a serious oxtail binge lately and every place I try has a different recipe. (Scarborough area)

Where's the best (your favourite) oxtail place in the city?

theres a bunch of places along eglinton west between marlee and dufferin. theres too many places along there to list that were good.

last time i ate there i found hair in my food, the waitress tried to say it was mine. my hair is long, blonde and at the time very straight, this hair was not. not impressed with the hair in the food (though it can happen), way less impressed about the accusation of planting it.

If the hair was short black and curly then there may be a little more to worry about than hair nets.

MR JERK peanut plaza.... HANDS DOWN best for oxtail and jerk pork.... and this is after trying pretty much every other place that anyone ever recommended to me.

In scarborough, the Oxtail at Sunrise is the best I've tasted in my opinion and its good value because they actually give you meat along with bone and not just a whole wack of bone like some other places do.

MR JERK at peanut plaza is my go-to these days because its the closest place to me and there aren't too many places that do Jerk pork and there's is pretty decent. The only thing is that place could use a serious scrub down and window wash.

I tried the oxtail at Sunrise just the other day and I didn't enjoy it much...
Beryl's Pepperpot in Ajax has got some good Oxtail if you're ever in the area.
