The REAL cost of owning a motorcycle…

1st year is going to be expensive, but it's the following years once the bike is bought and gear is bought where thins atleast level out a bit. there will always be repairs and upgrades though. it's then that the free parking and better fuel efficiency and sometimes cheaper insurance will help a bit.

slightly off topic
if it were all just about cost then scooters are great. some 80's riva 200cc thing for $500. an $80 helmet. jacket you already own and $300/yr or less insurance. done. scooter vs ttc even the first year is cheaper. following years are a joke. $1100 pass vs $300/yr insurance + 200 gas. and you could travel to other cities via backroads.

Well you should really invest in some sort of gear, even when riding a scooter in-town. Some scooter riders are a bit....... odd.

I used to save over 20 a day in parking riding to work. But parking was a bit of a pain because they like to film on temperance.

It can be really expensive, but it doesn't have to be as expensive as the OP either. As someone who just got their first bike last year I'll chime in with my expenses so far.This is not meant as a comparison to the OP, just an alternate route for someone who may be interested in riding on a budget.

Not nearly as detailed as yours, but for under $6k I am on the road for a year, with full gear. This is near the bare minimum you should expect to pay though, I shopped around really hard and went with used gear when possible. Maintenance costs are another beast, I do them myself and the bike hasn’t needed much so far. Under $100 total.

Reading through the thread... I have come to the realization I spend too much money on motorcycle ***** and i'm bad with money.

* Powerlet Heated Jacket $300
* Gerbing T12 Heated Gloves $300
* Airhawk DS $200
* Ghost Drift-S $500
* Wolfman Enduro Luggage $120
* Dainese Druids ST $200
* Joe Rocket Goose Pants $250
* Garmin GPSMap 62S $250

I'm just going to stop typing here.

Several years ago I did this: (My impulsiveness reached a all time high... Now when the fiancee mentions anything about motorcycles I just remind her at least it's not cars)

Civic -> Civic SI -> Mitsubishi EVO X MR -> Subaru WRX STI -> VW GTI (I'm keeping the GTI til the bloody wheels fall off)

I do lust for a KTM 1190 or 1290... Maybe next year. Somehow I just keep working things up in my head, and I will convince myself I NEED something.

For example:

I want an elephant.

-> Will keep the grass down
-> Makes great fertilizer
-> Could give elephant rides....
-> Who doesn't want an elephant?
-> 1 Elephant purchased

*sigh* I just realized I typed all this and the thread is about the real costs of owning a motorcycle... not my retarded escapades. Well... actually quite a few things I purchased are quite essential to motorcycle ownership.... ;)
