The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I am looking for a GTA watchmaker to repair a couple of items (70s Rolex, 80s Speedmaster). Who are you guys using/trust?

Sadly, my (and many local collectors) go-to guy passed away in December (Shane Ede). Just found out today, he was a great watchmaker and a great guy.
What a tragedy.

"After more than 50 years serving the watch community, I’m closing my business because I’m dying of lung cancer. It’s been a lot of fun fixing the watches of the many wonderful and supportive people who have been my clientele. I thank all of you."

LTTP on this, having been away for a while. but I've recently had good experiences with European Time in Oakville. Had been using a guy in Hamilton, but he got quite sick before Christmas and has cut his workload way back to only working on clocks, no watches.

Took in a few watches for regulation, turns out they'd been magnetised because I am an idiot and left my watch box too close to a bass cabinet with 15" speakers. He demagnetised and charged me a grand total of $18 for three watches.

Prices are fair, but turnaround can be slow. Definitely sits on the cheap/good but not fast part of the cheap/good/fast venn diagram. Not ideal if you have one watch you need back, but as I already have too many watches, longer waits are bearable.

Have a demagnetizer at work. I'll demagnetize an automatic if I wear it to work just because, and if one changes drastically all of a sudden (driver's door speakers can be a culprit) will wear that one in that day and do it.

They are available on Amazon from a variety of sellers for less than $20, too, mostly identical but each with a different alphabet soup company name.

I was just pleasantly surprised because I was expecting a bill north of a few hundred for regulation on the three pieces, so $18 was a bargain. He could also easily have just demagnetised them and billed me for regulation, especially as all are within 5 seconds per day now, and I'd have been none the wiser.

Looks like Timex has jumped onto the carbon fibre bandwagon.

Looking for some insight here…

My sons first communion is coming up fast and we’d like to (or my parents) buy him a watch that would commemorate it.

Parents wanted to do an Apple Watch but I’d prefer something more…non digital.

Top of the list is BABY-G but am open to suggestions sub $300.

As much as I despise them, omega swatch of some flavor? I assume resale prices should be coming down as they were a hot mess.

Any polish watches worth having? That could be cool.

How about a mechanical watch? No battery to replace. A classic one perhaps. Will learn to appreciate in later years as well. Might be a good time to hit the Bay as there will be sales going on now.

Baltic make really nice watches at really good prices. Polish roots.
Citizen and Timex are making some very nice affordable watches these days, well within your budget.

There are a few Eastern European brands floating around in used market that nobody ( except Eastern Europeans ) have heard of . I’d call it a vintage watch , your kid would call it a used watch .

The timex seamaster homage looks decent. Price may be too high for his plan. It may be ridiculously large for the kids wrist now. The kid is still pretty young.

@mimico_polak is the kid supposed to wear the watch or store it? While I like mechanical and will likely never buy another quartz, for a kid, quartz is more durable, doesn't require them to keep it wound, can't hurt it by setting time the wrong way, less likely for the kid to flood, etc.

Thanks all will look into the options. Totally forgot about the Swatch options with the different planets.

Baltic would be nice but I feel a bit too pricey.

Kid won’t be wearing it daily. He’s 8. I’ve had my watch stolen when I was that age so for now it’ll only be when we’re going out all together and more of a keepsake instead of a daily.

If it's a keepsake, an Apple Watch makes no sense. They're essentially disposable and will be landfill within five years.

I'd go with an entry-level mechanical watch with a common movement. That way, even in 50 years, it can be serviced and functional. I was going to suggest a Citizen Tsuyosa (like this one), but they have an integrated bracelet and so depending on his wrist, he might not be able to wear it until he grew up a bit. Maybe a better option is an NY0040, one of the most iconic dive watches out there. It's not too big so he can grow into it sooner, is insanely durable for an auto, and will still look good if it gets beat up so he can actually wear it. It's also a classic enough design that it will age well. If you hunt around, you can find them for around $300, too, which is far better value than any Seiko or Orient these days.

News was interviewing customers yesterday exiting The Bay stores. Overwhelmingly underwhelmed. 15% off MSRPs that were inflated compared to xmas MSRPs. Only thing the reporters could find with a higher % off was some garishly coloured luggage. Combined with xmas sale discounts the prices were better then. Better off with Amazon.

For now. Those prices will drop as time goes by and the actual closure date looms. Saw similar when a Sears closed close to us a few years back in BC. By the end, there were a few lonely racks with crazy markdowns, but mostly stuff nobody wanted. I ended up grabbing an awesome heavy-duty parka for $20 that was originally $600, which I still wear and love. Especially when walking the dogs in -30C this winter!

For watches, though, I'd expect all the PRX's and Hamiltons to be gone fairly quickly, with the Fossil and other costume jewelry watches the only ones left at steep discounts.

Barrie is running a stupid promotion. Something like, spend $125 and get 15% off, spend $175 and get 20% off. Most of the stuff people would want was stripped before the doors opened. Whether that was suppliers grabbing it back or the bay keeping things for their stores that remain I have no idea. Staff are all upset that people are now showing up and it was a ghost town. Meanwhile, the people showing up still aren't buying as prices are still too high even with the "clearance".

Bay management gets $3M in bonuses for sticking out the three months. Employees get no severance. F that nonsense. Our laws need to change. If you were steering the ship, you go down with it. Management needs to be the absolute lowest on the debt tree.

That climbing percentage sale was going on prior to Monday (it was 25% @ $250+ as well). I checked their brand + models they had in stock early last week to see if it was even worth while to go (pointless if they don't have anything I would want/wear). It was in effect then. One weird thing I saw. They had 2 Timex Q GMT models (both pepsis, different model numbers and prices). The lower price one disappeared in real time while I was checking individual watches then refreshing the main page.
