The last thing we need - A "Smart" windshield

if it turns out to be the typical "emergency" where one or both of of my teens are losing their mind because the internet went down for 90 seconds (;)) i'll be glad i wasn't distracted on the bike trying to read the 150 text messages inside a 60 second period - that sort of crap can wait. ;)

lol. I'd expect the HUD to be tailored to the info you want to see - ie, turning off all txtmsg notifications.

"Anything" is grossly over-stated. We know the cellular phone is not going anywhere, and it pretty well is tied to everyone's hip.

uh, nope..not me - no cell, no fb, no twitter.

edit: and no gps. freedom from gadgets is a beautiful thing...

You haven't really cleared the list of "anything". You've just listed a GPS, and a cellphone.. and then cited two social media platforms. I know what you're getting at, but I was getting at all the other things that 'take the rider's eye off the road.'

If you're a purist who chooses to eschew all distractions while riding then that's great and I respect that but it's also irrelevant.

Distractions that take your eyes off the road may technically be "dangerous" but the real issue is the length of time that your eyes spend away from the road and the amount of attention a given distractions demands. Your gauge cluster is a distraction but it's designed to be glanced at quickly.

They just showed this on Daily Planet. It's cool and new, but I really don't want to be using all of that crap while riding. But I guess it's no different than hunting for one of a hundred buttons on a Goldwing.

The gauge cluster isn't interactive..unless you find the signal light blinker amusing or something. The problem people have with electronic gadget distractions is that they are.

The two things are not really a fair comparison. If the gauge cluster displayed text messages, facebook status updates, alerts that your friend posted another picture of his cat/lunch/motorcycle/kid/etc on Instagram, etc etc etc then it would be, but most don't display a whole lot of anything that would cause your mind to have any interest in them beyond a split second glance. Phones/electronic gadgets are different.

I'm going to pull over as well, but I've never been able to tell when in my iPhone 4 is ringing in my pocket. Ye olde Ericsson T610 worked a lot better for that.
+1000 My old BlackBerry Curve would almost fall off the table with how it vibrated. The newer phones suck for that.

In my view AF4iK is entirely correct and so are you, PrivatePilot. To keep it all in context one would have to scroll back in the thread to my initial reply to taximan62 who made the comment about "anything is dangerous". In my original reply I was alluding to basically what you're both saying about, "anything."

How did people die before we had cell phones? The mind boggles.

I assume you're trying to contest what I'm saying, but it's not really working. You'd have to go back and look at the context in which that comment was made and then figure that back when we didn't have cell-phones certainly people cared when family died.. and I'm sure if a magical device was available back then to be alerted to the fact ASAP they'd be thrilled.
