The knife thread

Buck mini multi tool I've had for years. More a novelty than anything. I had it as a fob on my keychain. Got wanded going into the Opera House for ACS' premier of Crusty Demons of Dirt II and they weren't going to let me in on account of me being armed. I couldn't stop laughing. They finally let me in with it. Once inside I told one of my friends I was with that went through ahead of me about the episode (he was one of the two friends we called "the Knife Brothers"). He smiled and pulled a 5" blade ceramic knife out of his jacket pocket.

I'm not really knife person. I still have a Testa given to me as a kid, he bought it in Germany during the postwar occupation.

About a decade, maybe a decade and a half Winners/Homesense/TMX... had "Twin Man"/German Henckels B-stock for very (maybe even crazy) low prices (a bunch of different lines). The big top end 10" Chef's knifes were <$30 and it went way down from there. I will admit I went a little crazy (going from store to store) and still have a huge pile of them, many still never used. All were excellent except maybe a slight spot on the blade or a scratch on a handle (and of course a B printed on the blade...).

I have a Normark Big Swede that is my favorite. No picture but is exactly like the one in this video.

Not mine but a friend that I camp and hunt with regularly. IIRC it’s a Gomboy 240

Everyone I know that has a Silky loves them though so take it fwiw

How much cheaper do you want? Average value of those knives is $6. It would be nice to know why CBSA thinks they are prohibited. Nothing is obvious from the picture.
They're all one handed opening. In CBSA's recent opinion, that makes them prohibited. The little thumb post or hole, plus a centrifugal flick of the wrist, makes them a prohibited weapon in their interpretation of the Criminal Code. I don't know if other police agencies will also use that interpretation, but it would obviously affect a huge number of knives already in the country if so.

Probably affects about 2 million already in the country . That seizure at $6 per knife , wow they must be great quality.
Do we have a lot of knife fights here ? I’m guessing more kitchen knives stab people .

Well that's BS. The actual written law is pretty clear and one-hand opening has nothing to do with it. Hand pressure only applies to a button or spring on the handle (eg post or hole in blade is allowed). The gravity or centrifugal force should be applied only to fully closed knives. Almost any knife can be flicked to fully open from a position just before fully open. From that point to fully closed, there is no easy break point so applying it to fully closed makes sense.

"prohibited weapon means

  • (a) a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife, or"

Yeah, thinking too hard about the intelligence of the law will just make you angry. Our interpretation had no legal weight, unfortunately.

Here's the full 2018 CITT ruling, if you're interested:

Again, I'm not sure if the CITT ruling is something that other law enforcement agencies can/will apply or not. If so, there are are several million people walking around oblivious that they're now carrying prohibited weapons.

My take would be if your walking around minding your own business, nobody including law enforcement gives a crap. However if you get into mischief , you’re in possession of a restricted weapon. Like get a DUI , bad enough , but now you get searches while being processed at the slammer and you have a R weapon…….

My guess is some body needs a headline that says $172,000 worth of illegal weapons , not 60 boxes of 3” Pen knives . You don’t make the cover of Border guard quarterly unless you photo all those pen knives open for the pictures .

Those black blades look extra scary.

Looking at that picture there are a few that clearly are defined as prohibited. The ones with external triggers and the double-blade push daggers on the right are a certainly a no --no... the ones on the left appear to have some sort of button release on the blades, probably a release assist to make them gravity flickers.

From what I understand, a shipment only needs one piece of contraband to be completely confiscated so many of those knives might just be part of the show. If it were 295 plastic toy pistols and 5 real ones, all 300 'handguns' would go on parade.

and a fixed blade one doesn't need to be "opened".

Would love a butterfly knife, but R.

I use the bottom of ceramic mugs/bowls too at some point in the sharpening.

Why do I like knives??????

Have lots, just nothing very expensive or special. Keep a multi tool in the backpack/car/bike. DC is a little Swiss on my key chain. Had to take it off and hide it outside, going into a Leafs game. Going into courthouses, can't carry anything unless you are doing trades work...lol. Carry my whole tool bags in then.
