The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

Riding on the sidewalk isn't a green light to run the cyclist over. They're both at fault.

EDIT
Actually, the driver is at fault for the collision, the rider may be guilty of riding on the sidewalk illegally if his wheels are more than 24 inches (stupid law).

The reason the rider took off is probably because there was no reason to hang around. What should he have stayed for?

I believe that has now changed to an age restriction (under 16) in Toronto. At least it was on the table to change about 2 years ago, IIRC.

Because people illegally occupying an intersection doesn't absolve drivers from the responsibility of avoiding them!

He's not illegally occupying anything. He's driving the wrong way down the road. When you're doing that, the things you hit are on you.

Meanwhile, this keeps happening...

But hey I get it, we're fighting the war on cars here and war means casualties, amirite?

Irrelevant to the previous situation. Just because a bike does a hit and run, doesn't mean that a random car is allowed to do the same.

Vehicles belong in the street, not on sidewalks.
Is that just some inherent sense of justice that informs you about that, or are you basing it on the law? Because as a reply to "it's a stupid law" that would be equivalent to bible-thumpers response when told their religion is dumb.

The cyclist was in the crosswalk, which is bidirectional. He only went outside the lines because the driver was blocking it.

True, was just adding some perspective.

I say that because putting vehicles in the midst of pedestrians is inherently dangerous and I'm tired of almost being taken out by some entitled cyclist on a virtual daily basis.

The cyclist is not a pedestrian. He isn't supposed to be there. It's the same thing as a car coming the wrong way down a one way street. Yes I will try and avoid colliding with him. No I am not at fault if it happens. If he had dismounted his bike and walked it across the crosswalk, then you would be right.

Guy cut in so close that the truck driver couldn't see him? I know my niece sticks up here arm when walking in front of a truck.

Saw a young girl on a bicycle take out a little old lady getting off of a streetcar. Girl took off. One of her peers on the streetcar identified her to the EMS that showed up, and she was soon back with the bike in the trunk of a police car. Little old lady survived but had a concussion and some nasty bruises. Cyclists need to think things through a little more thoroughly in my opinion.

sounds like a private property scenario, hopefully you don't get sued involving ins.

Don't think it's Ontario, but it could be.

I've accidentally had my highs on the bike. The problem is that if you don't use them all the time, you may hit the switch by accident, and not notice until the next time you look down. Lots of bikes seem to have this issue. For me it's useless to try and identify one brand of car or bike, when I've seen just about every type, even some rare ones, doing something stupid.

Some vehicles have the high-beam indicator badly placed. Tall folks (me) and short folks can sometimes find that when the seat and steering wheel are set to comfortable positions, the rim of the steering wheel blocks part of the instruments, and if that happens to include the high-beam indicator, it's easy to not realize that the high beams are on. I hate it when the auto manufacturers put important idiot lights along the top of the instrument cluster (and short folks probably hate it when they put those along the bottom). Put something unimportant there ... put the important stuff smack in the middle.

I installed a double-bubble windshield on one of my bikes because the stock one blocked the entire upper half of the instrument cluster.

I'm thinking Joe opened the front door of the office he was leaving, and that would suggest the lady slammed into the door of a fixed structure, persumable with some sort of promenade for pedestrians. If she can successful sue someone for that, all hope is lost

Pretty much this. There is a poured concrete sidewalk with curb, and then along the doors, parallel to the sidewalk, a ~36" strip of paving stones. Presumably to indicate the swing of the door.
Luckily for me, the way the door swings, when she hit the door it slammed back into my right shoulder. If it had been the opposite, and hit my left shoulder that I am rehabing, I may have thought about a lawsuit. That would have set me back months and a few thousand dollars in chiro/massage/acupuncture /physio. That's the other thing...she wasn't just leisurely riding, she was going a bit on the faster side. Surprised the glass didn't break.
