The "Are you thinking of a new bike for 2024?" discussion thread.

Didnt want to create a new thread, but purely hypothetically, if Im looking for a beater, offroad, thrash around adv bike, is a budget of around 3k realistic for a used klr?
Just barely. I would go for the iconic gen 1. The lightest and best at enduring mild "get offs" unscathed. Also the worst brakes and suspension of all 3.

I should really buy a truck tho..

decisions, decisions
imo a hitch is the best way to go, much easier to load/unload bikes from a low trailer than a tall truck bed.

But if you're gonna go truck, go toyota, had a silverado for a while, every week something broke.

I used to love Kijiji, but gave up on it a year or so back honestly. Now it seems just overrun with businesses instead of actual private sellers. Try looking for tires, for example - 50,000 returns from businesses and hardly any actual private listings, which is often what I'm looking for.

I see it's still the same.....business, business, business........

FB marketplace has it's own list of frustrations, but at least there's actual private sales there vs just being overrun with business postings.
Same thing happened to eBay when it first came on the scene.
It was a huge international garage sale. Then it turned into a cheap way for business to sell crap. Today, its almost impossible to find a private ad on there.

It's especially ironic since Kijiji is owned by ebay and when it was introduced, was designed to put the "private seller" back into the equation.
Its even more ironic that Kijiji is only in Canada and not in US.
You would think with their larger population and market, they would also have it there.

Craigslist is the defacto standard there despite never really catching on here. There was even a beef between CL and KJ when KJ first launched, I remember. But for whatever reason (Lets be real, it's $$$$$) eBay decided to just turn Kijiji into an ad-factory. I think things really turned the corner for Kijiji when FB Marketplace becamse a thing and really took off, and now they're just limping it along trying to still pay the bills honestly.

FB is such a disaster to search or do anything with I hate it.

I'd go Suzuki DR650 if that's your criteria. Compared to the KLR it's a lot lighter and does offroad better at the expense of slightly less comfy on road. Unchanged in 20ish years so parts are everywhere.

I’ve always got the itch. But my itch is simple and cheap.

I’m debating between giving the Ducati one more season to impress me (may buy real windshield), or going into a new direction with the VSTROM / Versys / Tenere lines as the options.

🤷🏻‍♂️

Variety is the spice of life as they say.
How about the Triumph Tiger 660?

By all accounts a brilliant bike.

Would really like a new-to-me bike sometime this season.
Don’t get me wrong… I absolutely *LOVE* my KTM RC8r. Freaking brilliant bike. But for commuting or trips, it’s not the right tool.

So, I’ve decided I’d like something a little more vertical riding position.
Looking at the KTM SuperDuke, KTM Duke 890, Aprilia Tuono, Suzuki GSX-s1000. Would like to add the Ducati Diavel or Streetfighter to the list but finding one that hasn’t been abused to hell isn’t an easy task.

Superduke or duke 890 imo, let me know if you want a test ride.

Didnt find the tuono as fun on the street.

What don't you like about the Scrambler? I was considering the Cafe if I can get my hands on a clean model.. which seems reasonably impossible.

skip the SF, the motor heat is misery.

Nothing specific that I dont like about the Scrambler. Its more a matter of the bike not being ideal for the type of riding I’d prefer.

I prefer longer rides and with the <200km per tank and lack of wind protection it just doesn’t fit the bill for the majority of my style of riding.

It is a great bike and I quite enjoy it for what it is. A short hop here and there and less than a 3hr ride it is fantastic for.

That’s why I may just keep it another season to get to know it better. 2023 was a waste of a season for a variety of reasons due to personal commitments.
