Tankless Water Heater???

yup got a Rinnai R75LSi this year
$2,400 installed upfront but applied for and got:

$315 Fed Gov't Grant
$315 Prov Gov't Matching Grant
$300 Enbridge Gas Credit
$210 Fed Gov't Home Renovation Tax Credit
and save $24/month on the rental of the hot water tank from Enbridge.

I don't notice a significant difference in the time it take to get hot water out of the faucet when demanded compared to my hot water tank.

why is this problem worse than with a conventional tank heater?

The delay is noticeably longer than a tanked setup, but not enough to discourage me from buying it again. A lot of e-reviews have serious beef with the delay time. Not sure if those folks are really impatient or have a legitament problem.

Sounds like a set up with the small tank added on might be the way to go.

Good opinions...the grants are definitely a pro! :)

I was about to get one installed in my house, but was told by the dude who came by my house I would have to replace my gas line to accommodate tankless heater(3/4 pipe to 1)at a cost of about 3 bills. He also was cool enough to honestly tell me not to do it because he said I would just break even with the cost involved in having tankless as opposed to traditional tank. But I have big jacuzzi tub that can't fillup with the tank that I have now, oh well back to the drawing board :p

I was thinking about that too, but my financial advisor(wife:p) doesnt want to rent one plus our regular tank. Direct Energy said they may be able to install the tankless for free and I would just pay the rental fee, but its too far from the gas main and because I have gas fireplace and furnace on the 3/4 pipe dude said I couldnt get around needing to replace the pipe. I think Ill just have to fill the tub caribbean immigrant style...keep boiling the kettle, lol :)

I go tmine, was about 3700 installed.
hot water wait is about 5-6 sec, I can set the temp to what ever I want (keep it at 120), love it!

Tell your friend to get a storage tank if he wants to get rid of thatcold zone. You can go from a 2galon to a 75 galon, but a 10 is normally what we put in.

Thus negating most of the advantages of tankless lol. I'm not a big fan of them. It does take a while for the hot water to come and they can only be problematic when you just want warm water or a trickle of hot.

A tankless would be great for the application that you have in mind. As for the piping, the techs were correct. It has to do with the gas pressure, pipe size, the distance and the load. If your piping isn't designed to deliver enough pressure to your appliances, they won't work within the specs, they're more prone to failure and can cause a hazardous condition.
