I never in the past took mental health seriously. My employer offers numerous courses to help educate their staff. I'm just now realizing there are many different challenges people are facing. Some times is the person sitting right next to you without any signs.
Most men, there's never any signs.

""How are you?"

"Living the dream!" - means anything but...

We all tend to take on too much.

It's all around and has been for years. These were all people I knew,

- the kid who had a locker next to me in high school
- a best friends brother
- my cousin
- my nephew (he watched a guy commit suicide by subway - didn't likely help)

Pretty sure I'm missing another one.

Just like we all have someone close to us or know of someone affected by Cancer, they same can be said about mental health. It's just not talked about as much.

My cousins BIL (her husbands brother) committed suicide 2 days before my wedding. I partied with him the week before at my bachelor party.
My cousin was supposed to be in the wedding party. She was there for pictures but the whole family skipped the reception.

RIP.

My first experience was at 12. A friend was caught with a Playboy book in his bag at school, he shot himself before his dad came home from work.

About 10 others in the last few decades.

I think it's called spotlight effect when the person making the error thinks that for the rest of their life the spotlight is on them for an error in judgement. In reality, people forget but it's tough at the beginning.

All a decent dad would have done is burn the book (after reading only the articles). It would have been a good time to open up a discussion on the difference between love and sex, reality body types etc.

It's a bigger problem when a 12-year-old boy isn't interested in a copy of Playboy.

I bet if you ask and most men are honest, it would surprise you who contemplated taking their own life
Unfortunately you are correct.

I think every man / woman I know has contemplated it. Hell I have over the years.

But it’s a permanent solution to (typically) a temporary problem.

I have my children and wife to think about and they keep me going through the roughest days and nights.

Me… never, the though has never crossed my mind .

I’m sure a few others have thought of ending me.
