Suzuki of Newmarket

Bump! I came here to actually write a positive review, but I am now terrified. I just purchased a new bike from them and will be picking it up Friday.......

Just an update. Picked up the bike, and there were no issues. Like I has said, every one I dealt with was great. Tony in sales was straight to the point and a no-bull kind of guy. I would do business with him again(but don't plan on buying another bike for a long time haha). Are all the negative reviews at the same SON? (jk).....any ways that's my $0.02

glad it went smoothly, with the amount of sales they do there will always be negative reviews, i personally wont step in there due to numerous bad experiences few years ago but times change and managements change..
i think a lot of the problems with them are after service, once they get their money they have no more interest in helping you and are a pain to get stuff done once you walk out of the showroom.

I'd say Tony is probably the best guy in sales there. He's genuinely a nice guy, and he actually rides to work almost every day

If anyone has any issues, come see me. I'm a service advisor and take care of the bike and car shops.

That actually makes me feel better (no sarcasm). Glad to see that someone was/is rectifying the service problems,

Problems with any Dealership start at the top. I had a very good friend who has been a technician in the industry for over 30 years working at SON. The owner would try to institute some new "deal of the week" in terms of production and quotas etc., forcing the Service Dept. into producing work too quickly. There were a number of variations to this scheme and it drove him to leave for another shop.
Sales people in dealerships cannot just pull an "administration fee" of $500 out of thin air and put it on a sales contract on their own, this is something that the owner instituted.
Sure SON's prices seem great, but its through misrepresentation. I had a quote from them on a bike and at the time, there was an "admin fee" of $400 tacked on to it (DR200 for my GF). Needless to say, I did not buy it because of this. It's insulting and dishonest.
Just like anything else you buy, you should consider: how is the product supported, who is your local dealer and what access do you have for customer relations issues? In the case of SON, don't expect much other than price.
I've dealt with their accessory dept and Dave and Shawn have been really great............the insult to my intelligence begins when the owner shows up and bull****s you about products that he knows nothing about just to push the sale. He should stick to something else and stay away from the accessory dept's customers.

I bought a used quad from there last summer that was supposedly reconditioned to new. Performance was so terrible so the first thing I did was check the air filter to find it completely caked with stuff. Apparently, "reconditioning" doesn't include something as simple as changing an air filter that is completely clogged with dirt. Their bike service is terrible/non-existent and the sales guys will tell you whatever you want to hear to get your money. Highly recommend avoiding that place.

Please don't... I need my job.

The access dept upstairs is great to deal with. Amazon looked after us in a very friendly and professional manner. Bought a helmet and jacket for my wife. Great prices too.

I think your job is safe there.

Agreed. . .I hate Suzuki of Newmarket. Consistently the worst dealership I've seen. Too many friends who've had too many bad experiences. I remember at the January show my buddy was buying a C50 from them. . . one of their guys started talking to my buddy and was telling him how this C50 could blow the sidecovers off a 1500 cc bike. Not that either of us cared anyways, but it was just laughable.

However, also agreed that the upstairs accessories joint has always been good to me. There's good people up there. A shame that the cash goes downstairs.

Yes we all know how honest Suzuki of Newmarket is but now they also are operating the new Suzuki 407 and Yonge. Wow now they can cover a larger area looking for new fish to reel in!!!!!!!!!!!

Brought my bike in for service and to have the bike checked since I sometimes blow a fuse when I use my turn signals. Dropped off the bike Monday morning and pick it up after work around 4:30 I was told they found the problem and it was an easy fix. No longer then 20 mins into the drive home my bike cut out. After paying 300 bucks I was once again stuck on the side of the road and the problem was worse I blew 5 fuses trying to solve the problem. Before I could turn off my signals and continue riding but now every time I turn the key the fuse pops. I can admit the Suzuki of Newmarket service guy did come pick me up and drive me home.by sitting on the side of the road I met the gtamotorcyle lady she was very helpful and informed me of this site since I am a new rider.the next day my bike was taking back to the shop to get fixed again.i got my bike back the next Tuesday, the bike sat there from Tuesday to Saturday before it was looked at and i was never told about the progress I had to repeatedly call to find out its progress.a week later I was finally able to ride again and another 200 bucks later.Arriving home I looked over my bike and noticed they forgot to put back a few screws and bolts back so now I gotta go back and show what unsafe work they do. I'll never go back

I was getting worried; there were no new reviews of SON. I'm glad to hear they're still alive and up to their old tricks.

As they say, there's two sides to every story.
I'll address these points one by one since you have chosen to comment on this in a public forum . I am the service adviser who was dealing with this

We inspected the bike, The Electrical fault was a intermittent one. As anyone who has worked on vehicles knows. Intermittent electrical faults are one of the hardest things to trace. We found a hot wire had been clamped under a clamp used to secure a remote reservoir hose for the rear shock. When the wire was moved it would blow the fuse. The wire was repaired and we could not get the fuse to blow. We assumed this was the extent of the problem.

After paying 300 bucks

The bill was not just for the electrical issue, There was other work done. Your bill for the electrical work was 1 hour or $94 +hst if I remember correctly .

I received a call after hours as I was heading out the door to go home. I grabbed a truck and trailer and went to pick up the bike. I then drove you home on my own time getting home almost 3 hours late.

As I told you , It looked like there was multiple issues and it may take a while to track down. I said we would let you know when it was done. I never made any promises about how long it would take. My main concern was making sure all the electrical issues were resolved.

The bike was looked at the next day initially. , One additional fault was found created by a hack digging in to the factory wiring, The Fuse blew again, At this point I instructed the Tech to pull off the fairings and the tank and go over the whole wiring system. What we found was both front aftermarket turn signals were poorly installed by tapping into the original wiring and leaving pigtails on both sides free and dangling to ground out. In addition the main harness had been cut into under the fuel tank and not secured leaving it hanging down on the cylinder head. the insulation on the wiring had worn through leaving a hot wire exposed to ground out. There was also another area on the right hand side of the subframe where the wiring harness had been cut into and left unsecured leaving it to rub against the frame.

I had to repeatedly call to find out its progress.a week later I was finally able to ride again and another 200 bucks later.

My main concern was making sure all the electrical issues were resolved. For this I charged 2 hours labour. When in fact the Tech spent well over 5 hours on it. In hindsight I'm regretting giving you a deal on the labour and should have just handed you a bill for the actual straight time. Do you honestly believe the kind of work I outlined can be accomplished in 2 hours ?

Arriving home I looked over my bike and noticed they forgot to put back a few screws and bolts back so now I gotta go back and show what unsafe work they do. I'll never go back

Since you never bothered to call me but instead chose to post here I don't know what fasteners you claim were missing, But if true, Given what was removed , I can't see how a unsafe condition was created.

This is the only time I will comment on this.
As I said, there's two sides to every story. Many people on this forum know me personally and know what type of person I am.

Stand-up guy, that's what kind of person. SON seems to have achieved a fairly negative perception. I'm certain that John is not responsible for that and he would try to correct that perception without fail.

Well this does clear things up a bit. I can attest that electrical problems are the most difficult to diagnose. That's why I'm a huge supporter of DIY.

Yeah, seems the DIY flushmounts didn't work out so well.. :)

John is a stand up guy and very helpful (met him first at the track years ago). Service at SON has a VERY negative reputation long before he got there. A well deserved negative reputation. Last time I went there for service was....5+ years ago? Bike was returned with the front caliper bolts finger tight. I believe it can change but it is going to take time to turn the negative rep around around.

I'll vouch for John's reputation and I was hoping he would post his side of the story.

This, folks, is why you should have second thoughts when buying any bike that has non-OEM electrical accessories - whether it's flush-mount signals or integrated taillights or fancy LED strips or heated grips or ANYthing. About 95% of the time, they have been installed by a hack without either the knowledge or the tools to do it correctly.

Is the power fed through the correct fused circuit ...

Has the correct gauge and type of wiring been used ...

If harness modifications have been made, have they been done in an easily-accessible and easily-replaced sub-harness in case something does go wrong, or were they done to a darn-near-irreplaceable main harness ...

Have the connections been soldered and shrink-wrapped THEN taped ... Mechanical "no-solder" wiring connections will not last. Tap connectors (no soldering) will not last. Electrical tape is not insulation ... shrink-wrap is. Electrical tape is only to hold the harness together and provide *some* protection against mechanical damage to the harness.

Has the harness been secured in place properly to protect it from mechanical damage ...

Intermittent electrical connections can be extremely difficult and time-consuming to diagnose. If you're the one who has done the electrical work in the past then you have a fighting chance of knowing where to look for trouble. For a mechanic going in who has never seen the bike before and has no knowledge of its history, it's a crap-shoot whether he will find all of the problem areas in one shot.

Unfortunately ... labour time costs money. I prefer to get paid for my time spent working. Not sure if the original poster does.

LOL to this!

When I bought my new sv650, long story short, took nearly 2 months for me to finally lay my hands on it ONLY after going in and making a scene about it and taking it to their sales manager.

The owner then came out and proceeded to try and push me into buying another bike simply because they were over stocked with gsx650f's which no one seemed to want.

Horrible sales department IMHO. Can't remember the sales reps name, he was an arrogant prick more interested in my deposit then actually selling me a bike.

The bike itself was put together correctly for the most part. The fairing mounts were a bit tweaked and they somehow gauged part of the fairing...

I never set foot back into that dealership again.
