It really irks me when people throw in their old helmets. It's a bit like selling your house and throwing in some used underwear.

Well yes and no....my first bike bought instantly on the spot, the used helmet was ok until shopped around, free is free and always nice too have a spare.

Maybe I'm annoyed because I'm an XL so I can't fit my head in the vast majority of random helmets.

I wouldn't touch a used helmet or a used child seat. You may never know if these were in an accident until it's too late.

If your a bit worried of that then your in the wrong sport, riding a bike is really a 24 hour daily risk that a helmet is only a small part of the safety, but I see your point, I needed it just to get home from few blocks away.

Sport? I don't ride track, so for me it's a hobby. And you know, if for you extra $100 is not worth the price of your own brain, then you're in the right 'sport'.

I have an old mountain bike helmet with the chin bar smashed in, would you like to use that? I'll even give it to you for free.

Maybe a bit harsh. I wouldn't ride with a used helmet because the amount I do its easy to justify spending that money on a nice, guaranteed safe one I like. At the same time I'm not going to crucify anyone who wears a used one. They should at least know the risk they're taking. You can't tell if a helmet is damaged by appearance alone. IF you're involved in an accident and IF that helmet is damaged and IF the impact is on any part of the helmet that's damaged, the helmet isn't going to help you.

You could still wear a used helmet and get some protection out of it, and you could still get killed from an impact wearing a brand new top of the line helmet. When you wear a used one that hasn't been tested, you're decreasing your chances of survival.

Maybe you should worry about yourself instead of others, my post did not advocate buying or using a used helmet,if I want to get home from a sale wearing a used helmet
or riding a Harley thats my choice. I obviously went out and bought new gear, spliting hares as usual. :)

Fair enough, but this is what I was responding to really: "If your a bit worried of that then your in the wrong sport." I don't know how to take that other than 'man up', which downplays the importance of having a helmet in good condition, as they are essentially single-use devices.
