Students owning bikes & Osap

Students don't make enough to pay taxes. All money made they keep. If you have parents who disqualify you from government loans as they want to drive their cadillac the only option is to live rent free at home. Work two jobs over the summer months. Stop making excuses.

You realize the basic personal amount is only like $8k, right? And there's CPP, EI, and any other potential deductions, so if you work during the school year you are definitely paying taxes. As has also been mentioned, not everyone can live at home while going to school (for a variety of reasons). I didn't.

Also, your second statement is pretty judgemental. For example, my mother made a pretty good income (which made it hard to qualify for OSAP), but had two kids going through school and her savings mostly got wiped out in the divorce. She was not driving a Cadillac, I can assure you (and even today I drive a better car than she does). Now, try to reconcile living away from home (ie paying rent, buying food, etc), going to school full time, and trying to afford tuition, books, student fees, and a $1500 laptop rental (mandatory as part of the program), on what you make during the summer and what you can eek out during the year. It's not easy.

Just yesterday I saw an article in the Star that the student unemployment rate is at 13% and climbing. Things are getting worse for students in Ontario, not better. So while there may be some $15/hour jobs, there are certainly not enough even minimum wage jobs for everyone. Also, everyone is capable of working a back-breaking, labour-intensive job (although I certainly have, and for far less than $15/hour). That doesn't make them lazy or unmotivated (although I certainly agree that lazy and unmotivated students exist)

So you can understand my frustration when people are buying motorcycles with OSAP money and those who are actually trying to get OSAP so they can go to school but can't it.

Hmm, way more than that. not to mention that your tuition + books + living allowance is a tax credit that adds to that.

Roughly an $8K federal allowance and another $8K provincial? Something like that? Then add on the benefits of a T2202A and a myriad of other deductible things..

When I was in school I always got enormous tax returns.

no, the base is closer to 11, fed and provincial vary, and you also get a credit just for working that is an extra grand, the amount you paid for CPP and EI are also credits, as well as public transit ( there are more but those are the most common ones that students will enounter)

The federal and provincial allowances cover the same income, they don't get added together. example you make 10 k, the federal part gives you 15% of that back while the provincial gives you whatever % your province's tax rate is. ( about 7) giving you a total of 22%(ish) back.

its 5 am here, so pardon the bad explaination.

That makes sense.

What are you smoking? Students working full time most definitely make enough for taxes even at min. wage. The only work that doesn't get taxed is of the cash payment variety. You're also assuming that jobs get handed out like hotcakes. I'm fortunate in that my employer likes my work enough to keep me on the roster while I'm away so I can work the day after I get back. I have experienced and qualified friends that have been back since April that got turned down everywhere they applied.

And you're also wholly ignorant to the fact that many students aren't welcomed back home for free.

Wow, the parents income disqualifies you from government loans, you are not welcome to live at home rent free, and no employer wants to hire you? There is a pattern here.

I believe if you make under a certain amount you get most of your taxes that were taken away each pay check back when you file your taxes at the end of the year. I could be mistaken.

+1 to the fact that not everyone is welcome to stay home

A form can be filled out to request the employer not take off the taxes.

This coming from a someone with an iphone. Life is rough for you. Spend more time worrying about yourself. Concerning yourself with what others are doing is a waste of your focus. If anyone wants a job hard enough you will find it. It may not be a great job but it will be a job.

You do that by writing in "E" at the bottom of the tax form you fill in when you get the job.

NOTE that you can only do this if you actually have enough credits to take yourself down to 0, you can't do this if you actually make decent income but just don't want to pay till the end of the year.

You know iPhones are not expensive? Unless you're getting them the stupid way.

I survived school, and I'm actually doing pretty well, thanks. I've been out of school for nearly a decade. What I am concerned about is other people who are trying to get an education. And not using my hard-earned tax dollars to subsidize a bloody motorcycle.
