Stolen bikes

2wet is on the right track but overreaching a little. Most dealerships now are marking the main body panels with the vin (and adding $500+ to the invoice). I didn't see any that were marking mechanical parts (although it could happen, due to the number of parts, accessibility and size of many parts I doubt it happens often).

No...the V.I.N is the actual unique number or the "serial number" of cars or bike. And every other part in the car/bike has its regular part number, when they manufacture your motorcycle or car in japan, the manufacturer has part numbers on almost anything that is put in the vehicle, and all those part numbers belong to that V.I.N the "Family" or that bike/car. So the parts in the car or bike are linked to that one unique V.I.N i.e serial number of the bike/car.

So for example when in California street racing, when cops bust street racers, they run their engine part numbers through the system, and 99% of the time they catch racers with stolen parts, those part numbers link back to its original V.I.N (serial number, unique number, the original vehicle it was put into), and that's how easy it is to figure out that the street racer had a stolen engine, and that parts in his car were from another car.

So if someone stole your 1000RR's radiator, and some racer on a cbr 1000rr in cali got booked for street racing and cops ran his radiator part number and it matched your V.I.N, that guys is ****ED! as long as your bikes radiator was reported stolen. and as long as someone on the other end runs the part number...if its reported stolen, that person with the stolen part is done for...reason those kids get booked in cali, is because they are stupid, they just steal parts from one car and sell it to someone else who has no idea and put it into theirs, all locally too.

Professional thieves, take the whole car, whole bike, rip it all to parts, destroy the VIN and part numbers, and replace them with fake untraceable numbers and VIN, and sell the stolen stuff with never used numbers, usually in 3rd world developing places where no will ever check.

A part number is literally that; the number of a part in an assembly. It is not an individual identifier, but rather a number that indicates what replacement part type would be used, if required. A serial number is a unique identifier, that can be used to track a specific item. Not all parts in an assembly are labelled with their part number, let alone possess an individualized serial number. There are services and kits that can be used to acid etch a unique identification number on key parts but if you think those numbers are on everything by default, then I need to know what the colour of the sky is in your world.

You also need to stop bypassing the swear filters, or you're going to start accumulating infractions. Try using words instead of literary expulsions.

The most common thing is the acid etching of auto glass, which is one of the big ticket items that thieves want. My own vehicle is so marked.
