State Farm renewal raises my Super Sport rate 275% on BMW

Phoned yesterday to cancel my policy for a bike that i just sold on the weekend.

Was going to put just fire and theft on the Race bike, the agent basically just told me to go elsewhere.

My policy was due to expire in April, and i asked her if she had any idea how much my rates would have gone up when renewing. I was given the same story about "unable to do".

She did however mention that earlier in the day they had a customer whose old rate was $1300 and had increased to $2900.
 
So what are the options for someone like me? I love my 750 and I don’t want to part my ways with her. Yes, I have an SS but I don’t ride like a maniac. I am safe until September 2016 since I paid $1400 this year (my policy runs from Sept to Sept). Here is my situation:


  • M, 28, GM2, Single, G for 6+ years, M2 for 3+years, will do M next season
  • Live in East York
  • University of Waterloo graduate
  • I have a 99 Civic Si coupe that I drive onlyduring winter
My SF agent told me to be prepared to get hit by as much as $3k or even above. I figured if that happens I will totally stop driving and pay insurance for the bike on installments.
 
I wouldn't wait until September, everyone else will be looking to move to other companies and we all know that when there is more demand the prices go up for a particular insurance. My Bike renewal with SF was not until may, I already switched to another company that offered me cheaper prices than even my current rates with SF.

Well I just got my renewal from TD on a 2010 Yamaha Roadstar 1700 cruiser. The increase is 30%. Tie to begin calling other companies. Nothing has changed, on my end, (other than 1 more year, 36 riding experience).

Same story--just got my TD MM slips in.
Ex500
Went from $1100 year 1, to $880 year 2, now to $1250 year 3.
Clean record.
Nearly a 40% increase.
 
Yes with me TD is "claiming" the 30% increase is because of the number of claims on my type of bike.. Now they did pay out, (so far about 17,000, for medical and bike repairs), on my collision, BUT they will be recouping those costs from SF, as the SF client is 100% at fault. My bike roadstar 1700 isn't the most popular bike around so likely very few other claims. I guess the "accident forgiveness" I am paying for doesn't count, as I still get a 30% increase on the very next renewal...lol

I have checked with two other companies, who are also in the ball park of what TD wants. FYI I called one Allstate agent she said Allstate won't do stand alone bike policies. I didn't believe it so I called another agent and she said they do stand alone bike policies BUT there is a $250 "surcharge" for doing so, obviously Allstate won't be getting my business, (Yes I qualify for their underwriting, non SS, over 50, and 35 years full M).

Buddy at work with 6 or 8 bikes (I've lost track, he has a garage full) just got his renewal notice recently from TD and he got a huge jack as well. There's a BMW touring bike amongst them which may be the culprit - no accidents, no claims, nothing has changed, and he's been a rider all his life.

He's gonna shop around he said as he's none too impressed.
 
Unfortunaly it doesn't mean squat for the Ins- companies if you have no accident/clean claims/etc
when they raise their rates it is for everybody...sad but it's true. They want to kill the motorcycle industry in Canada.

It seems TD isn't terribly interested in continuing with the motorcycle market, and state farm isn't interested in some portions of it...but that doesn't automatically mean either are trying to "kill the industry". There are other insurance companies out there.

Why do you think people complain and make their comments in here??
Most of us we ride ss/naked bike/ and sport touring. In the last 5 years rates went up and still are going up, that's one of the reasons a lot of guys are selling their bikes to go to the track.
If i had a bike like yours im pretty sure i would'nt complain and my insurance statement will be a lot less.

You can't blame the insurance companies if their spin on their numbers is actually correct - the same numbers I hold in disbelief.

Insurance companies want to reap the greatest gain whilst losing the least amount of money possible. Their numbers show sport bikes in the 600cc + category have a massive amount of theft and a huge amount of crashes. Smaller cc bikes have fewer crashes and smaller injuries. So why bother insuring anything considered a SS, or even remotely in the SS market?

Basically, I'm saying that since insurance is responsible to their market shares for profits, they want to maximize profit. Sport bikes are a "loss leader" for the most part - why bother insuring them if overall you don't make any money or lose X% profit when they are covered by your system?

I detest insurance companies and their "rape and pillage" fees and structures, but if you look at it strictly business, I'd do the same.
 
Just for fun I was getting quotes from Aviva, Allstate and lastly SF. All were with bringing my car as well, (Allstate will only do a stand alone bike with a $250 surcharge). The quote from Aviva was a a slight decrease, (less than $50 per year but the car was $250 more than I currently pay) Allstate is about $100 per year more for the bike but more than $300 less per year for the car). Then I called SF

Licenced 35 years, no at faults in the last 10 years. 1 10 over the limit ticket. Car was about $100 more per year. Bike 1700 cc Crusier was more than double what my TD renewal, (which is already a 30% increase over last year). My TD renewal is $1452 per year SF wanted $3108.96 per year. So perhaps it isn't just SS's that sf does not like. If I were expected to pay over $3,000 per year for a bike I would sell the bike LONG before I paid that rate again at 54 years of age..lol
 
^ Yeah State Farm bases rates on engine size, so they're not friendly to big-bore cruisers.

Anyone with an SS and 30+ should contact All-State. Best rates by far.

What could you start a class action law suit over? if your really that ignorant ill spread some light for you to what insurance company's do. lets start with them totally neglecting one of a humans rights in this country, that being you shall not be discriminated against due to your gender. Since the day I stated driving because I am a male iv had to pay higher rates. easily double from what a female would pay. and just to put it out there i have a clean record. now when i called today to state farm to give them an ear full about my 200% increase i brought this to their attention. they responded with well sir your not decimated against because of gender its a statistic. i then replied, why do we have driving records for? all they do is if we get a ticket or a claim you can charge us more, but if we over 10 20 30+ years prove that we are not part of that young and lots to learn demographic that make those statistics then why do we have to be punished for there actions. a driving record should be all that is looked at, not your gender your age or where you live. we should just be a number in a system. if you base your life on a statistic and punish everyone because history has shown us it can happen then i guess you'll also agree never to get on a plain with anyone that looks like, well don't make me say it.


Now for all the people that say well you have to pay to play, i hope you have to sell your cottage to pay for your insurance to ride that bike a few measly months of the year. must be tuff.... but in reality the reason we have a government is to take care of its people. without us there is no them, sure i agree driving is a privilege not a right. could you tell me why other province governing body's do there job, why does BC and Alberta have insurance that is monitored or ran by the government to make sure the company's are not taking advantage? i mean lets face it insurance has the best business model iv ever seen. you must have this product, they charge insane amounts of money for there service. if you dare choose to use the service you pay for they will increase your rates to high hell. they do anything and everything they can to find a loop hole to not provide what you've paid years for. most people will empty their accounts to pay out of pocket to avoid calling them, and this does not apply to all but isn't insurance there if a mistake is made by someone. oh and last YOU MUST HAVE IT. well it just doesn't get any better then this.....


i now have to touch base of the fact that SS get dinged harder then any other form of two wheels. weird iv never seen a Harley or Vespa under a car, or speed for that matter. unless they have a dam magic bubble that forms around them i wonder why people feel that those types of bikes are not capable of reaching speeds that could cause serious amounts of harm to there riders or others. only thing i know is SS can just get to those speeds a bit faster.

with all this being said im starting to feel that this and the greatest generation are just to scared to stand up and fight for what they feel is right, we all just bend over and take it. i will be starting a Facebook page a thread on here and contacting the media to inform them that if this government doesn't start to protect its citizens from unjust discriminations and company's taking advantage like this that they can expect a PEACEFULL protest this year. maybe right in front of city hall. its time for everyone to stop bitching about it on here and get up and do something about it. lets band together and do something for once. if they raise our rates because some of us drive to fast well lets go really slow and maybe that will get them to start on the already promised insurance decreases that we have been patiently waiting for from our government. i am tiered of getting lumped into a group and having to pay a price for it, its 2016 and now more then ever we are fighting to stop those types of statitics and stereotypes.
