Speed limits

I respect the road and ride responsibly given the road conditions, but I have a problem with ridiculously and irrationally low speed limits. I'm sorry, I just can't respect the authority of whoever is responsible for setting speed limits so low. If the majority of people think most of the posted speed limits are too low, why can't we get them changed? There are cynics who say that speeding fines are a source of revenue rather than a way to keep the roads safe. I think that many accidents are caused by frustration with these unnecessarily low speed limits and the speed differential between those that follow the rules and those that see the lack of common sense in painfully slow speed limits.

Why bother, if they raise the speed limits, some donkey will just block the fast lane anyways.

THe speed limits do seem to be painful at times, but with the abysmal level of driving skill I have witnessed on our roads, a higher speed limit would only cause more carnage.

Search the site and google the 400-series change facebook page.

There was a petition, research etc. etc. done and the transport minister for ON still refused to even consider it. He even admitted to being passed non-stop doing 100kmh on the 400s and holding up traffic in 40/50 zones, but nope.

This. It's a huge problem in this toilet bowl of a province. Go out west where it's 110 and people understand that lane is for passing, not annoying people because you drive a mercedes and are the most entitled human being on the road.

Even if the majority think they are too low (debatable, many people will scream "please think of the children"), good luck getting the majority to sign something to that effect. The backbone of funding the police system is speed enforcement and speed kills marketing.

Hold on now, I also have a Mercedes lol.

If Mercedes made a motorcycle, your head would explode!

Or most places in the States, interestingly enough.

One time the bf was driving me home up the 404 super late at night (read: no traffic), there was some old geezer in a minivan turtling in the carpool lane doing about 40 km/h slower than everyone else.

My personal pet peeve is people who insist on doing exactly speed limit as they go down a valley (that they then have to floor to get back up to speed going up the other side). Then you get a lovely convoy of red lights behind them because ONE guy doesn't understand physics.

Not that hard to hit the speed limit and hit cruise control. Pretty relaxing actually.

110 km/hr would be ideal for the 401; even if they chose to leave it at 100 km/hr is parts of the G.T.A.

I would still drive at 120 km/hr if they raised the speed limit so it would not affect my driving at all. Kind of a ridiculous speed limit since the flow is usually at 120 km/hr plus in my experience from Windsor through the G.T.A. regularly. Police are often out and about but are not pulling people over doing 120 km/hr. The defacto speed limit seems to be 118-122 km/hr.

Other highways are whacked. Highway 6 between Guelph and Hamilton should be 90 km/hr not 80 km/hr. People regularly do 95-100 km/hr and do not get pulled over. The police nail the people doing 110-120 km/hr.

Speed limits are a joke in Canada. Freeways (400-series in Ontario + a few extra multi lane highways) should have a 130 km/h speed limit. 100 km/h for a multi lane highway is the biggest joke of a speed limit I've ever witnessed.

It's like farming money.

You let everyone go 120ish and then regularly pluck a few ripe tickets. Pluck too many tickets and everyone will slow down, pluck too few and you'll get a crazy mess of speeders. They've got us nailed at the perfect revenue balance point.

If you get a 125km/h ticket when everyone else is doing 115-120, it's basically a 25kmh over the limit ticket for doing 5-10kmh over the prevailing traffic. If the speed limits were set at 120kmh and strictly enforced, now you're stuck with pidly 5kmh over the limit tickets!

And? Speed limit should be 130 km/h but heavily enforced. Like it is in Europe.

they should also enforce the 'minimum' speeds required on a hwy.

Ideally, slow lane would be 100, and every lane change to the left would be +10 km/h faster. Never going to happen though.

Yeah they should. But they never do. And they should have a law and enforce it for the ****ing idiot drivers who hog the left lane. And the idiots who merge onto the highway at 60 km/h. And the idiots who don't signal. God, I don't understand how so many people suck at driving.
