Someone complained about our house to the city

So today a Municipal Standards Officer came by the house and stuck his card on our door. I have read that they only come by if someone has filed a complaint about your house. I think it is about our grass or fence OR the noise from my bike.

Should I just ignore the card or try and contact the officer? Anyone been in this situation before?

Anyone work for the city of toronto that can help me find out who complained ?

do they not make any note of the intent of the visit?

If it is about your grass, cut it please, I hate neighbours that do not have any interest in maintaining their property.
If you are having wild parties and being inconsiderate, maybe you need to tone it down
if your bike is too loud, do what you can to be respectful, don't run up your street at redline

hopefully your are a good neighbour, if you have a neighbour who is just b!tching for no good reason, that's too bad

good luck

Throw it in the garbage, but also consider the possible reasons for their visit and try to 'be a good neighbour'

What you can complain about your neighbors grass? People have too much time on their hands.

Excuse me as I have a few calls to make.

Nope. Did not mention a reason for the visit.
We do maintain our property, but not to the standards of our retired and have nothing better to do neighbors. However, the maintenance we do at this point are for the weeds that have taken over the lawn. We have tried our best to get rid of the weeds but it is a losing battle. Our only option right now is to re-sod the entire yard, but this would be a project to be completed once we have done the interior renos and actually have more money for proper landscaping.

Other than that I think we are good neighbors. No loud parties, say hi to those who are friendly, and keep to ourselves most of the time.

some people just have nothing better to do than complain.
I hear ya about the retired nothing-better-to-do-all-day-than-landscape neighbour.

Whether the complaint is justified or not - they're probably going to continue trying to contact you. Why not just call and find out the reason for their visit?

i had this happen my dck neighbour kept doing this all the time to my house. specifically at me.
i called the number and spoke to the officer. first time it was because i parked a commercial vehicle in my driveway over night (work truck). apparently its against city of toronto bylaws to park a pick up in your driveway... or for this matter anything with black letters on its plates.

second was for my dog "apparently barking too loud" all the days they had reported a barking dog my dog was with me at work

all in all call and act polite and they usually will tell you whats up, how to fix it, and in my case turn a blind eye. =D

in the words of the officer.... your neighbours think me and my team have nothing else f-ing better to do than watch for a dog.

I'd just continue as you were. If it was an issue which actually required some attention, they'd leave a note or make a call; not just drop a card. At the very least, your neighbour could approach you. It's not up to you to follow up on your neighbours likely petty concerns.

they leave a card every time they visit... the first one is a courtesy thing. after the second and third visit they start writing tickets. just saying.
either way in the end what happens is.

A. you get a court date.

B. the officer contacts the person who made the complaint. tells them to keep a two to three week log of all the events that you did that apply to the complaint.

C. both you, your neighbour, and the officer will all meet for the first time and legally duke it out..

if your neighbour fails to log everything or fails to show up... you win. most neighbours wont do this because they dont wanna openly burn bridges. seeing how they will have to continue to live next to the person for years to come.

I'm surprised that someone from the city actually did something. The complainer must have really made a fuss.

Negative, the only way to stop goofs from making complaints like that is to show em whos boss.
Take off your pipe and do a quick spin around the block for the next 5 nights or so at different hours of the night. That will show em :D

Anyone who says they don't care about the appearance of their neighbour's house is either:
a) stupid
b) not a homeowner
c) lying

Cut the grass/weeds....holy crap.

The card is typically left at the door to advise you of the visit. Normally a registered letter will follow indicating what the problem is and the penalties for not correcting the issue.

You are correct sir..the registered part precluding the recipient from claiming they didn't know about the problem and the penalties which will follow.
