Soccer/football thread 2022

I know very little about soccer but did watch the Japan Spain game.

I'm puzzled why the second Japanese goal was allowed. The video showed the ball going out of bounds, being kicked back in and then into the net. I'm sure the Spaniards didn't like the call.

Other than the constant cry baby stuff it's a good game. Do you get penalized by your team if you aren't a suck every time someone touches you.

Very very tight call, but here's what's considered in and out of bounds.

Would have been something if both Japan and Costa Rica qualified from that group. Good on Japan coming back from a goal down twice against two very highly rated teams.

Being a ref can be tough, even in the other football. Where was the ball, the players foot and knee in the micro second that would result in the direction of travel of many millions of dollars?

How many frames per second and how fast was the ball travelling?

60 MPH is 88 feet per second. Standard cameras run 24 frames per second so the ball movement from frame to frame on a standard camera could be several feet. Ultra high speed cameras can catch a bullet in mid air.

I'm not protesting the call but "What if....."

Imagine how the Germans feel about it.
That goal knocked them out. At least Spain still advanced :)

that's exactly why they use VAR now and don't rely solely on the refs on the field. As per the article, data points collected 50 times a second so 50fps?
IMO, they should use this tech in other sports.
boxing, especially since the refs all seem to have different thoughts on what 10 seconds are. (jk, how else would the corruption work)

So in 1/50th of a second a ball traveling at 60 MPH / 100 KPH would go 1.76 feet. 88/50. Sometimes you have to live with the picture you get.

Dang, I was happily ignoring this World Cup with all the teams I was cheering for either not in it or bounced early (Italy, Canada, Wales). But now with Morocco, there's a real underdog story. They're also the last team not from the traditional European/South American conferences....

It was satisfying to see Ronaldo on the bench for the majority of that game today. He’s the poster boy for entitled jerks.

The Moroccan keeper (who was born in Montreal, btw) must have really studied the Spanish penalty takers prior to the game. He had their number for sure. I enjoyed watching the Moroccan players take their penalties. No stutter-step, Brazilian two-step, mambo garbage. Just step up, pick your spot and hammer it home.

well..except for the winning penalty which was just a **** you to the Spaniards.

Moroccan defense and goalie are top notch. Only let one in so far this world cup (Canada) and that was more a goalie mistake.
Know who I'm rooting for.

I hate PKs to decide a game, but I cannot think of a better (practical) way.

It works for sure but I don’t think it represents the work put in or skill by one side vs another. It’s more like flipping a coin. There are teams that seem to play for penalty kicks and Croatia are one of them.
