So, the insurance black box monitors are here

Papers here say if we allow them to install the black boxes into our cars to track our acceleration and braking behaviour and other stuff we can be eligible for discounts up-to 25%.

I'm not installing that **** into my car. I'll wait till they buy off the pols and make it compulsory. At which time the rates return to what they are now.

But, the thought did cross my mind that it might help the younger riders who need Hayabusas at 18 to save a few dollars.

Yep, if this ain't big brother I dunno what is.

Anyone who does this is gonna have a rude awakening when it turns out no matter how they drive the insurance company may just rule that you're being to aggressive and hey, your rates should go up.

Bring it on. I rarely go more than 120 in my car.

Unless you are really overly aggressive with the gas/brake (which you shouldn't be if driving normally) then I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Accelerate more than 13 km/h in 1 second or brake more that 15 km/h in 1 second and they call it "sudden" and effect your rate.

Times of day driven can effect your rate.

Number of km's driven in a year can effect your rate.

No thanks.

You're assuming they are basing their data on a sample size of you.

Doubt it.

Papers meant actual paper from the company. It's at the office. Didn't mean newspaper article.

And yes, it could be a sample size of 1. Why not? Computers can track it all. It's a wonder the 407 doesn't just automatically mail people tickets for driving at an average speed of 101 km/hr since they have a computerized tick of when people enter and a tock of when they exit. They probably calculated they'd lose more revenue if people stayed away than what the provincial treasury would gain.

If this becomes compulsory I'll bet we'll see a slew of products designed to circumvent the black box. Auto makers will then patch their box and devs will hack it again spawning a cat n' mouse game.
One day we'll all have self-driving vehicles and anyone choosing to drive manually will suffer stratospheric premiums. And the spirit of driving will be dead. An autopilot racing league could be amusing to watch for a few laps though... oh wait, we already have nascar.

I am amazed at the amount of people who truly think that insurance companies are going to give you a discount after the price you are willing to pay has already been determined. Soon your implant will be able to give you a break on life insurance unless it detects you are consuming too much coffee or beer, or its velocity sensor determines you to be a risk taker.

As usual dummies who think they are great drivers and never speed or do anything wrong and should therefore have cheap insurance will get the shock of their lives. If you are monitored full time while driving you will speed, swerve, brake hard, accelerate hard , do more mileage per year than what you told your insurance company and drive thru areas the insurance companies find high risk. You will therefore now have a solid record of how EXACTLY you use your vehicle and it will not help you save money.

Since you're in the business I seriously thought your opinion would be otherwise

I'll have the chance to test out one of these devices for my employer soon. I've already seen the web interface that would be available to the client and it's actually really cool, and I'm pretty excited about it.

To the nay sayers, the goal of the devices is to attract the best drivers with the best rates, so yes, they will result in cheaper premiums if your driving characteristics are similar to those who don't cause collisions. On the flip side, if you consistently drive similar to people who cause claims, your premiums will go up over time. Since we won't have data from the get go, it will just be a flat discount for a few years until the data rolls in, then we can create statistical models to determine the characteristics of good drivers.

We won't care if people kill the speed limit every now and then -- it's not a program meant to apply "speeding surcharges" or anything like that. In fact, the data might even show that people who speed are no more of a risk than people who don't speed. Or, maybe it will show that speeders are LESS of a risk (although giving a discount to speeders might be a tough sell :P). In short, we will look at the data without bias and see what it tells us. It will be very interesting to say the least.

Where or where do I sign up for one of these? I'm sure my premiums will hit the ground and the insurance companies only have the best of intentions. Look at the data without bias? Bull f*****g $**t. Insurance is already the biggest legal scam going today. I hope if anything, there comes a day where someone steps in and the crooks are ordered to lower rates back to earth. Just like everything else in onterrible, your insurance will not go down. Ever. They will find some excuse to stick it to you. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to have their head examined.

If you cause collisions, the insurance company knows and raises your rates. If you don't cause collisions, then why should the insurance company want to know how fast you drive/accelerate/brake? This is a scam. Insurance companies aren't going to spend millions to save the average person money, they're going to spend millions so that they can earn multi-millions.

There's no way this is going on anything I ride/drive, they'd cancel my insurance in under a week, or hit me with $10g's/year premiums.
