This is my third Thanksgiving ever since I moved to Canada and I have no fking idea what the Thanksgiving festivities are like.

Can anyone suggest a place or an event I can go to as a single person and not feel unwelcome?

I could be wrong but I don't think there are any public Thanksgiving events for anyone to attend to. The only ones I can think of would be food banks or shelters that may organize a dinner for the less fortunate.

It is a significant "holiday" in the North American traditions and culture but it is mostly celebrated privately with family. Its even bigger in the US. In fact they consider it to be bigger then any of the religious holidays.

I also never grew up with it as it is not part of Polish traditions. However, since immigrating here, we do "celebrate" it with family by getting together for a turkey dinner. I actually don't care for turkey but that's just a personal preference.

yeah it's not usually celebrated in public, more of 'invite your family over and smash some turkey together'.

I can take the gravy but I file the cranberries in the same category as pineapple on pizza.

If you want to get the essence of Thanksgiving then I would suggest donating your time to helping organizations like Scott Mission or Salvation Army, more specifically helping the kitchen staff. Helping serving meals to those who can't afford that basic need is really eye-opening. It may be too late to get an opening b/c opportunities like these are quickly filled and require screening but totally worth the experience alone. Christmas is also a prime opportunity to see honest people helping out through shelters and soup kitchens. If you get the role of dish washer your going to notice an increase in grip strength afterwards, win-win.
 
As @oioioi mentioned, it’s not a big deal in our traditions so for us it’s just another reason to get together with friends and family for a gorge fest.

I don’t like turkey. I don’t like cranberry, and I don’t like the stuffing.

But that’s just a small part of the event. I like the beer, whiskey, and having a laugh with friends and family.

A few buddies and I would have a ‘traditional’ Thanksgiving at Swiss Chalet as we went one year and then never again. Due to commitments it’s shifted over to next week.

And then swear 100% you’ll never drink or eat that much again…

One of my favourite memories is a Thanksgiving during university. All our parents were gone so a few buddies and I loaded up on vodka and Swiss chalet…

Good times…
 
Cranberries need to be done right , cranberry jelly is wrong ,real cranberries cooked down in orange juice then thinned out with countreau or Gran Marnie or however you spell that .

I’m no huge turkey fan , but it’s 3 times a year so I’m in.
Same with stuffing/dressing , made right it’s awesome, there are some poor stuffings around . And gravy is its own good group , so many ways to F up a basic sauce . My Scottish SIL likes to put diced organ meat in hers . Liver and heart and kidney . Yikes .
