So.....recession time!?

I'd say there is a labor shortage in certain segments , and I'm not saying I'd take any of those jobs at this point in life, but there was a time I drove a forklift and worked in a manufacturing job. What I learned was a cellphone weighs less than a hammer and I like BrooksBrothers more than Carrhart, but that was just me .

I cant hire a part time kid to bar tend at my boat club, its $17 and tips, hand people a beer. Our warehouse is perpetually hiring ( is cold miserable work ) . My wifes hospital is loosing people like the building is on fire, these are +-100k jobs .
I see signs everywhere looking for help.

healthcare is the only segment theres a legit shortage, for obvious reasons, working conditions and workload during covid has been insane

For anyone here who thinks the labor shortage is real, just for fun, apply to a few jobs in your field(Im assuming not many here work for minimum wage)and see what the response is like.

If its legit, you'll probably get offers left and right, and big pay raises too, if not, then you'll know whats what

My old company called me to see if I'm interested to come back. Told my boss and he asked me 'you told them eff off right?'

'Nope, asked them how much they're paying'

He laughed, I laughed, and then I told him I was serious. LoL.

I'm waiting to see what my old company comes back with. I currently work in gov't role, and we are losing people left and right to the private sector simply due to money. I mean the OMERS is nice...but is it worth it? I don't know. I'll see when / if an offer comes in.

OMERS is great but you need to put in the years to get the number up. As you have a younger wife, they pay something like 66% to her if she outlives you.

If the old company comes back with a dumptruck load of money, throw it in the market (or investment property if you prefer) and you may get to your magic number faster than the pension train (or not).

That job is perfect for people looking to make connections. Lots of successful people drinking and telling you their secrets. That's a hell of an interview.

For years that has been the case in my field. Starving for competent talent. Most of my competitors have expanded their ownership pool too far imo (>10% of staff have shares) so it spreads the profits thin. They are often looking for six figures for 0.x% to buy in. Basically a ponzi scheme to buy out the generation above. Ownership pool more than doubles every generation. I'm not interested in that model even though it has proven to be profitable so far.

No need to force anyone, just nudge them along. Here's a plot of land, house, etc with minimal property tax, or whatever else.

It's tough though...lot of open space in Canada for a reason. Nothing there, no one wants to live there. Chicken and the egg type of thing.
There are pilot programs in place to do this, half of them are in Northern ON, the other half scattered across the west.
Got any specific companies? I know MANY guys in brampton that dont know about this, but would legit love it

Interesting, I wonder how many of the 400k+ come through this program?(Id be willing to bet few)
Lots. In many northern mining centers they have a colloquial term that identifies 'Indians'.

I have applied for one job in my life - my first. If you have a network, demonstrated capability, and some reasonable career accomplishments, invest some time in a good Linked-in profile. Employers and recruiters will hunt you down.

I'm not sure if I get more unsolicited calls from headhunters or Duct cleaners.

I applied for my third job , 1st two landed in my lap , 5th job now and 3rd complete career change .
It was sooo much easier back in the day . Now people train for careers .
100% duct cleaners for me .

I never trained for a career and had several wholesale career changes. Early on my dad gave me some advice: 1) When people duck under the table - volunteer, even if you're going in over your head. 2) Built solid, transferrable leadership and management skills - you will be able to communicate with everyone. 3) Always have a shiny goal you can achieve quickly- it's doesn't have to be earth shattering, just something that aligns with the company vision. Once attained, do it again.

I started in the PC world (DEC and Osbornes) as a techie, moved to the facsimile business as a product manager, on to PSTN infrastructure in strategic marketing, then to my own textile business, then retired, then to teaching at a big bank, and finally to hardware manufacturing.

After rejoining the work place I made a rule that I'd leave the job if I woke up 5 days in a row not wanting to go to work. The bank did that to me after 5 years, haven't had a single day like that in the last year.

I remember how happy I was when I got 11.4% mortgage....back in the day....
Yup been there. Our last house was at 12.25%. We had a Mazda truck loan at 16%!

Were regular homes 1 million or even half a million back then?
Your point is what?

I didnt have the money back then to buy a regular home. I bought a townhome hours away from work.

Had 1 car.
Didnt vacation.
Used 40 year old hand me down furniture.
Didnt save or invest
Threw every penny at the mortgage to lower the amount going to interest

I had friends who lost homes when market values corrected because the banks wouldn't renew mortgages.

Given what I made I lived within my means.

Assets can be over valued.

Because a house today is a higher % of income the system should ensure low interest rates?

My income back then wouldn't be minimum wage in today's world. So?
This^
I couldn't have said it better

Problem is we live in zombie capitalism, corrections are no longer allowed, consequences be damned.

No housing correction allowed, no stock market corrections allowed, no companies allowed to fail (bailouts)

I remember a time when investment came with risk. I feel old.
So true. It will end. It's just been put off and will be really ugly because of it. I've been saying this for years. I have to be right at some point.

An Indian friend told me there is a new scam going where it is easier/faster? to get your Canadian citizenship if you settle out east and then they jump ship once its issued and move to the GTA with their friends. Not sure if there is truth to this but if so I'm sure it doesn't take long for plane loads to be doing the same thing once word reaches back home. I was on a flight 4 years ago routed through Delhi and the two guys beside me were coming to Toronto for a 1 year work visa...would bet my house they're still here.

It is true, you can get fast pathed if you meet the qualifications in 2-16 weeks. You'll end up in a designated center, you have to stay there until your PR comes thru, about 1 year. You need basic English, 1 year of experience in your homeland, and about $15K in cash to fund your settlement. You also need to find a skills matched job and get an offer (not hard in most of the participating centers).

The hospital has a lot to do with the Dofo and bill 124 and underfunding. Lots of support staff are just part-time and many are leaving for greener pastures :(.

Yeah go look at StatsCanada for areas like sault ste Marie. Majority of non whites are Afghanistan, Pakistan etc people

The alternatives didn't really put up much in terms of a 'better' option.

But you are correct...we got what WE, as a collective, voted in. Shame on us.
I am disgusted with JT's Liberal Mafia and disappointed the PC's lost a war they could have won if they spent as much time fighting the Liberals as they did fighting themselves.

Started working last week, a former Manager called and asked if i wanted a job. While negotiating the contract i had a former Director call and ask if i wanted a job. Feels good to be valued.

Then today a family friend called and asked if i would be interested in taking over the day to day in their family business as their children are not up for the task/interested and they want to retire. Oy!
