Small trailers?

I have one of the HF trailers and the thing is amazing for what I need it for. It has paid for itself 20X plus. (I don't know how but it cost me less than $200 CAN when I bought it). Plus plywood and my modifications.

If you could get one, I would recommend it if its not something you will be using to run a landscaping business with.
I have posted pictures of it on here before.
You are welcome to use it if you need it. Just let me know.
I do know I will need it in July for about a week. Other than that it is perfect for what you need it for.

The dodgy part is the VIN plate in the box. You want to import trailer parts. You definitely do not want to import a trailer.
And IF and WHEN make sure to register it as a home made trailer. Not a kit.

I was focused on the www.htstrailers.com

I think this is the same guy that was at the last Jan Bike show.
It is pretty much a carbon copy of the HF trailer with better quality parts and a higher price tag.
From what I remember when speaking with the guy, they were made in the same factory as the HF trailer in China.
 
Agree. There are a couple of GTAM members who have posted up pics of their rides strapped down to one of those hitch carriers.

IMO it might be fine for a 250 lb dirt bike, but a 500 lb street bike?

Exactly. I was told you don't have to pay tax on a homemade trailer. So I "built" mine.

I don't know enough about trailer certification and rules but I do know its only a 1 time licensee registration fee for the home made trailer and no annual inspections.


I still think that it is absurd that you can make a trailer out of 2X4's with square wheels and have it registered as a safe trailer to use on the road.

Other places in the works make you get a safety inspection for your vehicle and trailer EVERY YEAR.

Then I stripped it down, sand blasted the frame, a little metal, a little welding and it now looks like this:

I'm in a similar boat, need something small, folding, and can be stored easily. Atm I have to keep using my dad's truck to tow/use the bed. All I have is the Golf, and my options so far ?

Should have bought a trials bike and then you could easily ride it onto the roof rack.
 
Can someone just like MAKE their own trailer? If you’re good enough with welding....or can it be bolted together?

Theoretically could it be made from a wood frame? Or is that ridiculous?

Or even bolted together without welds?

YES.
That is the whole purpose of the "home built" trailer.
All you need to specify when registering is color and dry weight.

The HF kit is actually all bolted together.
Some people that may have OCD, welded it as well. Speaking for a friend. ;)

Also, the coupler cannot be welded on. Needs to be bolted on.

Homebuilt is laughable. You just tell them you built it, what colour it is and maybe weight and off you go. I really wouldn't mind if there was at least one inspection to make sure it might survive without flying apart. For simplicity I register trailers as homebuilt. I currently have plates for silver, orange and red homebuilt trailers. Sharpie on the back keeps them straight when they aren't on a trailer.

Importing a trailer is very similar to a motor vehicle with notification at the border, inspection at approved facility, etc. So if you import a trailer it needs inspected but if you build it yourself, no inspection. That's gov't for you.

You can even argue that the homebuilt trailer should go through a more rigorous inspection vs. a kit or a pre-manufacturer trailer.
A company that is in the business of making trailer should and most likely is well aware of the regulations it needs to adhere to as well as proper fabrication methods along with weight limits etc.

Someone that purchased a welder from CT or PA along with some stock metal, may or may not know anything about proper welding and limitations of said metal.
Without an initial inspection (or annual) who is to say that the trailer that was built while drinking a 24 of your favourite brew is worthy of being on the road.

Also, a lot of of these homebuilt trailers are seldom used and often sit outside in the elements detreating on someone's yard. Years could pass between uses and chances are that there are parts that would most likely need to be replaced. (i.e tires).

The intelligent person will do their own inspection and address issues as needed. But the reality is that unless enforced (annual inspection) these trailers will often end up on the road in not so road worthy condition.
