The big pharma companies don’t have as much of a presence in Canada anymore which doesn’t help at all. Merck and Astra Zeneca moved out of Montreal years ago. Merck's groups went back off to the states. Not sure where the Astra Zeneca crowd went.

Well if it was Trump, it would have been about him putting himself first (or maybe just golfing and his documented habitual sexual assaults), not putting the US first (like pretty much Trump's entire presidency). At least his legacy is clear.

Completely agree. Not sure why we have ZERO facilities or companies in Canada that can produce a vaccine like this but we are now shown to be completely unprepared for anything like this. I think it was in this thread or on another forum that I read there is approval for a company to start building in Canada, they would be capable of producing the vaccine but by the time they would be up and running, best case scenario, it would be October or November.

I think we need to have the capabilities, but if that is true then it seems like they are just throwing it out to look good despite it not really offering any help to the need for vaccines now.

This is the fault of our leadership, not the US or Europe. One of the reasons countries draw borders and defend them is to protect their citizens At a time where each jab can mean the difference between life and death, do you blame a leader for protecting what's inside their boundary first?

You missed something that I explicitly wrote out. "Conservative ATTITUDE. (Not necessarily solely confined to the political party)"

Up until a year ago ... A vaccine factory in Canada would have been (and was) vulnerable to budget cuts by ANY government that didn't see the value in having it. And that's assuming the government had any say in the matter. If it was privately run ... we're a small market ... it would have been (and was) vulnerable to production consolidation to somewhere else in the world. And that's what happened.

The only way to ensure that we have that capacity within our borders ... is to either have it government-run (in conjunction with research labs) or have sufficient financial support to a private company to encourage it to keep production capacity here.

How else would you do it?
