Shell Gas Station Policy

you used to go grocery shopping and make stops at the LCBO with your FF on? Hell, I have an open face and remove it if I'm spending more than 30s in a place.

Aint reading the whole thread. But I do this. I wear my fullface anywhere I go. Sometimes I'll have to take it off at the lcbo if they ask for ID, but if they dont ask for ID everything is all fine and dandy (and a foot+long beard sticking out of my helmet probably helps with the not getting ID'd.)

If a gas station employee ever told me to take it off before paying (I usually do pay at the pump; but sometimes I might want to buy a drink. especially water on a really hot day) I wouldnt. I wear glasses, and sunglasses over those glasses (which I do take off.) So to take my gloves, then glasses, then helmet off. put glasses back on, then pay (all while trying to find a way to balance holding my helmet, gloves and wallet). then take my glasses off, put helmet on, put glasses back on, put gloves back on. **** that.

If they need to ID me they can just tell the cops to look for a big red dirtbike with a neon yellow helmet. That's a better description than "dwarf with a big bushy beard" anyways.

Pastafarian trend is old hat; pun intended
All hail the Almighty Spaghetti Monster!

Dude this is a real problem. In what culture or society is face covering not considered criminal behaviour? I mean pluralism can work, but we can't cave to religious nuts and let them have their ways. What's next? Honour killings are ok for certain sects of a certain religion? Polygamy is ok for Mormons and others?

From the earlier link:

"Lindsay Miller describes herself as a "Pastafarian" and a member of the "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster."

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles refused to let Miller wear a spaghetti strainer in her driver's license photo. The American Humanist Association filed an appeal on her behalf, citing the registry's exception for religious head-wear.

The registry reversed itself and Miller got her photo, colander included."

Looking at the problem more generically, what legally constitutes a a religion?

Didn't Charles Manson have a religion with followers?

The Christian symbol is the cross, a cruel execution device. Had Jesus been born at a different time the Christian symbol could be a gallows, guillotine, firing squad or huge ax. Christians could demand the right to carry around huge axes just as Sikhs can carry Kirpans.

To me it is logical that a religion has to be "Recognized" in some way by the government but does that link state and religion? Catch 22.

If a religion met state approvals members would have to obey all of the religious rules not just the ones that were convenient or gave them an edge.

One could argue that a strict Muslim woman would not be out without an acceptable male chaperone and that he should handle the transactions.

Could a male clerk refuse to serve a Muslim woman to protect her honour?

The problem is far deeper than the helmet/ headwrap issue. We're looking at the big picture through a carburetor jet.

Polygamy's okay, just move to Utah, son. The place has awesome mountain activities and twistys right out your front door, too, all you gotta do is give up the booze (which is easy for some of us).

ANYWAY I agree that allowing a burka is BS, in certain scenarios; have any of you traveled to a muslim or buddhist country? In many places they make women cover up their ankles and shoulders, to coincide with their religious and cultural norms, i.e. foreigners must conform to their standards while visiting, regardless of where the foreigners are from.

Why can't foreigners be asked to respect our cultural norms, regardless if they are unwarranted or bred out of paranoia? They are our societal norms and they should respect them, or GTFO. Freedom to practice your religious beliefs is what makes this country great, UNTIL it begins to impede on our safety, or ability to enforce the laws that ensure our safety.

Well said, I'm a non-muslim Egyptian and as a child my family lived in Saudi Arabia while my dad was working there. Mother was harassed into wearing a hijab. **** those ****ers.

I saw a lady today that made me giggle on the inside a bit. Wearing headscarf for modesty but had the biggest fake breasts I've ever seen in the tightest bright pink shirt she could find.

On another topic related to gas station policy: What's up with buying propane lately? They treat it like it's nuclear waste or something.

3rd to last time I went and got it at Esso the lady came out and opened the cage and then made me dig out 6 empty ones to get to the last full one in the back and then put them all back in.
2nd to last was at Metro. Lady comes out and waves the key in my face and says, "All I do is open the cage." Again, made me dig through empties and fulls to find a good one and then clean it all back up. I asked her what would happen if I were to just take my new tank and leave the rest there, since I don't work there and shouldn't be handling their product and she said, "Well then I would yell at you to get back here and put it away!"
Last time was Esso again, a different location. This time they just threw the keys to me and told me to go get it myself.

Would make more sense to have a trained employee handling the stuff than just letting customers do as they please. For all they know I might think it's fine to toss one across the parking lot.

Then you are ignorant
No... actually I'm not.... I'm just intelligent enough to realize there is no difference, and I'm sick and F@$k'n tired of religious idiots trampling Canadian laws, EXPECTING to be treated differently than others simply because they believe some B@llSH!t fairytales that were made up thousands of years ago.
Religion has NO PLACE in the creation of laws. Keep that B$ to yourself. If you think there is a difference you are part of the problem.

I worked with a non Muslim from Egypt. He got out of there as fast as he could and has never been back. He has family he's not seen since (and that was decades ago) and he still says it's not worth going back to see them.

Because our politicians pander to the foreigners to get their votes.
They are new therefore easier to chorale.

I think anyone should have the right to see the person face when in public or working e.g. parents asking to see the face of the school bus driver.

Just asking but can someone walk into the MTO and say they don't want to show their face due to religion...and the person is white let's say.
Can the MTO ask you what religion is that? Wouldn't that be discrimination or violating the Human Rights Code by asking such question.
What if the white person says they are 'insert religion here' e.g. Muslim...does the MTO then ask for how long or prove it or I never heard of that religion? The person says as of 2 days ago...does it make a difference.

Also, what if the person covering their face is a TTC bus driver...as well has if a crime is committed how does one identify the person.
Before someone states that eyewitnesses are often wrong...at least they can get the gender and likely skin color right...just saying.

As I said, wait until some bank robbers catch on to robbing banks in Muslim garb...watch how quickly the rules will change.

Again, this is about getting votes and $ for political parties/campaigns imo.

I really doubt it would change here in Canada, all because Canada is Supposed to be about tolerance, accepting etc. (Look how far the gays etc have come now with their acceptance). Its almost fashionable to be a homosexual here.

but the French, they have always had the balls to do things, and speak up.. They have bans on face covering: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_ban_on_face_covering

and Quebec they wanted to follow through too.. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/news/quebec-hijab-ban/
