Shell Gas Station Policy

Then you are ignorant

Well wait a minute: Was it a man or a woman wearing the niqab? Robber or devout Muslim female?

If it was the former, the identification dilemma persists and from that perspective, it is no different. Behind that motorcycle helmet could be a robber or an innocent rider. Policy is to have him remove his helmet just in case.

The fact that they cared about the motorcycle helmet but didn't seem to care about the niqab suggests one (or more) of several possibilities:

- they have not yet been robbed by someone wearing a niqab
- they have been robbed by someone wearing a motorcycle helmet
- they're discriminating on cultural or religious lines (i.e. they're okay with their "own kind" but not white dudes)

No matter what, I suspect they'll change their tune when they're robbed at gun or knifepoint by a guy disguising himself with a niqab (and it will happen, someday...)

When you think about it once you are inside the building and helmet is still on what does it matter if you intend to rob them...wait hold on while I remove my helmet and put the ski mask on...lmao. They want better safety then lock the door so no one can enter while wearing a helmet...but wait you have free gas then. So better yet must remove helmet before pump starts.
There are holes in there stupid policies.

The policy makes no sense, and you just struck out with a stupid employee with a bee in her bonnet that day. Move on. Been to many gas stations, shell included with my helmet on. I walk up with wallet in hand looking to pay. What's the security risk? lol. Had I paid at the pump with the helmet it, it's just the same - still haven't seen my face.

Also, although it is private property they don't have a free-for-all on any rules and policies they wish to have. This is Shell, in Canada - not some fourth rate country where there might be a gas station that can get away with selling gas to only white christians (as some absurd example). If you're offended and feel discriminated against, then write your MP (?)

Self defense POV I'd rather my helmet than a veil. If I was attacking then a helmet would rock as protection.

Legally I could walk around with a rifle strung on my shoulder. Imagine the look on her face if I bump in there with my rifle. She'd turn white

I'm kinda tempted to try.

I live local, I have the boobs, could fake the head thing and gear. Someone lend me a street legal bike?

Interesting conundrum.

If you go topless, i'll leave the keys in the bike tonight for you. :)

Remember the sign at McDonald's? "No shirt, no shoes, no service"?

It's their private business, they can require what they want. It is your choice whether to buy from them. I pay at the pump myself.

BTW the get off bike spiel at shell is supposedly concerns of static electricity sparking vapour.

I've heard that, which I've always questioned. As I understand it, getting in and out of your vehicle, and discontenting yourself from the pump handle repeatedly are the best ways to initiate a spark. So would sitting on your bike not be less hazardous? Unless it did catch fire of course lol

Didn't mythbusters cover this once?

Never had a problem leaving my helmet on at Shell... most of the time I pay at the pump but go in when it's not working. The shell I go to there are very pleasant too...

I always dismount when filling my bike. Since mine has a centre stand, it's the easiest way to ensure a complete fill. I have previously had issues with credit and debit purchases at gas stations, so now I always pay in cash. If it is just a quick gas stop I never remove my helmet. I typically use Petro-Canada or Esso, as well as the 7-11 here in town and have never been requested to remove my helmet.

As was asked earlier on, do they have a notice posted on or near the door advising of this "policy"? If not, then I would question whether it even exists.

Not sure, iirc my understanding came from a news report. Anyway this video seems to back that up

Didn't read the whole thread. I remove all clothing when paying for gas. It's my own personal policy. Safety first.

I stopped at a Shell gas station today...Thickson and Taunton in Whitby.
After fueling my bike I went in to pay and was told by middle eastern woman that I MUST remove my helmet before coming in.
I asked why and was told it is a security risk.
My face needs to be identifiable for security cameras. Even though they have my bike and license plate on video.
I did not remove my helmet, paid and left.
While I was getting back on my bike I witness a Muslim woman with a birka get gas and go to pay without removing the birka.
I contacted Shell head office and was told this is a policy.
Interested to hear your thoughts on this?

They should put that in writing, maybe at the pump? Another simple but elegant solution from a half wit. And my interesting thought is that I wouldn't want to do business at my private property (I'm here to change out your shower head) with an obscured person.

I can't believe how many of you keep you helmets on when your not on your bikes. Its the first thing I do after getting off the bike. Anywhere. Although from some of the responses, some of you NEED to keep it on while walking around.

Agreed,,,,and actually for me it's the second thing, the first is to take the gloves off, so I can get the helmet off.....

it's nice to get some fresh air on the head, and in the helmet, feels so much better going back on.....

I think I only kept it on once, and that was in the morning going to work, was late, and running on fumes, pulled in, paid at the pump, fueled up and hustled quick to get to work on time...but still had to take the gloves off.....

Man, 2004? That video looks like 1994. We are getting OLD. Too blurry to see properly, but it looks like the lady pops back into the cab to spark up. Maybe some ash drifted into the fumes, or an extinguished lighter/match was still in her hands. Gasoline fumes are super volatile, as any child playing with gasoline quickly discovers.

Did not read the whole thread. Just a few bits and pieces.
Usually pay at the pump. Have a modular helmet. If I need to pay inside I open the helmet, lift the visor. Never ever had a problem. Shell only for me.
Plus I never talk to a Lady with my helmet on or if I have a baseball cap on always remove it as a sigh of respect.
When I remove my helmet that is when it gets funny. Quick 100 metre dash. Lol. English accent goes a long way. OK Mate? or is it Mate`es?
