Selling on kijiji....

Kijiji is frustrating this year. People are asking outrageous prices for old bikes. So they're getting bashed around a bit. Some deserve it. I use this site to get a real price on the bike as when the market settles, that's what you're going to get for it:

The guy formerly known as Mladin.

Interesting comparison. Listed a reasonably popular non-moto item last night which sold this morning.

Kijiji - 15 views, 1 response
Marketplace - 93 views, ~10 responses

The 1 Kijiji response was a tire kicker, and probably 7 of the Marketplace responses were as well, with 3 normal buyers.

The quantity and nature of the responses on Kijiji are directly related to what customers are attracted to what you're selling.

I sold a 1989 Case skid steer this spring for nearly twice what I was offered in 2017. I had 15 inquiries and 10 solid offers to buy.

A few years ago I sold a 1999 Harley twin shock dyna glide. I received more kijijidiot messages and calls with that bike than EVERYTHING else I've ever advertised combined. Dreamers, schemers, guys who want to chat about why they'd love to buy a bike but...(don't care), traders - one guy offered a watch!, and finally a guy who showed up with a truck and money.

I'm thinking about selling my KTM 1090, (link provided by Maverick to the blue book site was very helpful - Thanks) but I'm just not in the mood/head space for all the "I read on the forums.." self anointed mechanical geniuses asking about desmogging, farkles (I HATE that F'n word!), and all the other nonsense and one-off mechanical catastrophes you can find on various forums and you tube. As always I'm sure there would be a nice guy out there who would pay and be an easy trouble-free transaction, but I just can't be bothered right now.

Also it seems to me there are quite a few big ADV bikes for sale that have been advertised for quite a long time. Admittedly, many seem overpriced.

I expect I'll just keep it or trade it in.

I flat out state I won't reply to the "Is this available" in the add. List something just to get 20 of those messages? No thanks, don't need the money that bad. I'll still get those messages but they get deleted without responses.
I'm finding anything under $100 it's just less of a headache to donate it instead of trying to sell it.
Worst one's were when I was listing a snowblower this Spring. 30 "Is this still available" idiots, someone asking me to deliver it (for free) to Ottawa), and some lowballs. Sold it for asking (was a more than fair price) and still had others sending angry messages that I didn't respond to their "Is this available" messages.
I don't waste others time when I buy things. If something's listed fairly and especially if it's a pensioner or low-income I don't lowball them.

Try selling baby items for $20 or less. The amount of idiots my wife deals with I just told her to either toss it, donate it, or drop it off at Value Village or some kids place.

What's your time worth? What else could you be doing with that time that would benefit you more than the $20?

For the under $50 stuff have a garage sale and get rid of all at once.

People are hilarious on Kijiji. from personal experience bikes will either go at the beginning or end of a season and usually the absolute bottom of the barrel people are looking mid season. When I get offers that are 50% less than what I'm putting my bike up for I usually just send them ads that are more in their price range which are Ninja 300s. People want what they can't afford and then get mad about it.

The people who don't complain I actually reward them. Early this year I sold a GSXR 600 to someone, he was willing to pay the price I listed, i let him know that the front wheel hugger was slightly damaged from a disk lock, he was still willing to pay the price I listed, I dropped the price by 1k despite his willingness to pay the price because he wasn't a troglodyte like the rest of the people on Kijiji and he was easy to work with.

Honestly i don't even understand the ridiculously overpriced thread on this forum - who cares what someone is selling something for? Surely if it is unreasonable then they won't be able to sell it. People get so bent over literally nothing - go live your life stop worrying about other people. The best is when people get upset about starting prices when you're not even firm and willing to accept lower offers - imagine being that new to the internet that you don't know regardless of how reasonable your starting offer is you'll still get clowns who will over you 50% less REGARDLESS of what you put.

When i notice people getting lippy with me i tell them i'll give them the bike for free if they meet up with me in person - surprise surprise they never entertain the conversation at that point.

And having bought 4 motorcycles on Kijiji now, i've always been respectful, never offer less if the price is firm, never confront people about their prices if i don't agree with them, in fact i've overpaid on multiple motorcycles and that's on me for being antsy to get to riding again.

Motorcycling just seems to attract a whole new level of mad, broke people compared to other hobbies i've been in.

It'll change come winter and spring time. Too many people who are clinically braindead in the middle of the season

Yeah, not worth the hassle. I have shelves full of hot tub chemicals as people hand me boxes and boxes of them (usually a couple hundred $$ worth when I see the prices on top of bottles) when I take their old one to the dump...tried putting a few ads up but quickly realized it's not worth the messages back and forth, taking photos of this and that, and countless people stopping by my place for $20 here or there. Then dealing with the complaints when one is %90 full and not %100 full.

For lowballs on bikes and cars I kindly ask them to show me some other ones listed priced at their low offer....crickets.

Just throw an assortment of chemical in as a freebie when someone buys a tub from you. Keeps your storage under control and makes for happy customers.

My method is simple when I buy, I usually email them saying 'here's my budget for this item. If you're willing to entertain it, let me know and I'll come at the earliest opportunity. If not, what's your best price?'

The bike I bought now I had a deal with the original seller, and he gave me his best price (which was what I was willing to pay), and even the person that bought it from him and was selling it...I used @Mad Mike 's method of 'here's my price, valid until I buy something other' and she sold it to me for that price. Worked out great.

While selling...'no' is a full sentence that I use often, but have no issues haggling if that's how the seller starts. Low baller for 50% of my asking price...get a simple 'no'.

When I sold my X the buyer asked about the bike, showed up on time, and offered full pop. I gave him all the accessories I had, rode the bike to his location (after I asked if he's going to stab me), and then found some more parts laying around so I emailed him and he came buy to pick those up free of charge.

To me, it's a simple game of give and take. 9/10 times I find the item I want for a better price than listed...except my plyobox. Guy posted for half of what everyone else was asking, so now I have a nice table to lay junk on beside my work desk.

Well now I know who to call once I buy a hot tub!

It's not just bikes. The ads are free so no cost if you go fishing for a sucker. Replies are free via internet and full anonymity.

Lowballs should be completely ignored. If you want to waste their time reply "Let me think about it" They can stew forever and turn down other opportunities until the season ends.

I sometimes respond back that offer is too low to consider a counteroffer.

If we agree on a price texting back and forth I tell them that the price is fixed as agreed. If they open up negotiations again once they get to my location we start discussions back at the original posted price. Never had anyone balk at this.
