Selling on kijiji....

I NEVER negotiate via Kijiji, marketplace etc.

I’ll make arrangements to view what is being offerred, answer any questions etc. I‘m happy to respond to inquiries too.

Ultimately, a phone call can help the direction of things.

The pics and price should be enough to provide a good base. Assuming they like what they see and the price it’s listed at.

After that, make the effort to see the listing as it was advertised and make your offer. I find low ball offers less often in person.

When it comes to safety. I generally put it on the buyer. I can get it safetied. But, what is their expectation? I don’t want them to crap on me or the shop that does the certification because they bring it home and a buddy says it needs something and it should have been taken care off etc.

I usually offer the option to have them take it to a guy or shop at their own expense.

I’ve seen all kinds and I don’t mind telling them to look elsewhere. It’s not a fire sale and most often I’m listing a toy for sale. If your budget is half of what I’m asking, you are looking at the wrong listings.

If list it too high, I expect crickets.

I have little time for resellers etc.

This is nothing new. Who remembers Auto Trader Bike magazine. Came out on Thursdays. You list your bike with 1 black and white picture, put your phone number. Same thing, people call, most never showed up, or low ball you, or act like jerks. Only difference, no internet, no texts. lol

My favourite Kijiji guy asks to come see a Ducati I was off loading , gets to house and announces, I’m not in the market , I just like to look at bikes and talk bikes with people . Oh ok , bye bye now .

I don't mind sorting through the chaff on Kijiji, honestly. Very easy to do via email/app

Marketplace is like an alien culture to me. I'm not even sure is if a "good" ad is productive or if it just ends up confusing buyers... or the algorithm

I buy and sell a decent amount of stuff on both Kijiji and Marketplace. Kijiji has more “normal”people, Marketplace consistently has more people. Searching for stuff on Marketplace is a total PITA as you can’t search by latest and the algorithm rarely shows you the same thing twice if you have already looked at it.

If something isn’t selling, it is either niche and waiting for the right buyer to see it or it is just plain priced too high. There are a ton of dreamers trying to sell stuff for way too high of a price and it just sits, the stuff that is priced well and in demand moves pretty quickly.

When I am selling something and it doesn’t move in a week or two and I want to get rid of it I start dropping the price until it does sell. Also I always expect to bargain the price a little, some buyers just won’t buy unless they feel they got a little bit off the asking price, regardless of how good the initial price actually is.

Things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

I'm on the Tracer buy / sell forum on FB Marketplace. Reasonably focused and relevant for Tracer sellers located in the GTA area. Obviously I'm not buying odd's and end's from someone in Malesia.

The general FB marketplace is total garbage. Minimal categorization and sort capability. FB could have assigned a student programmer for a couple of months to make it a better site, but they couldn't have been bothered.

Market is odd in that if you ask for a specific item it will start showing you other stuff before you see all of what you asked for. If you ask for Honda they'll start showing you HD before showing all the Hondas.

Home Depot also does that. You do a price / stock check on an item and they tag on "You might also be interested in".

You want to get a price on a bathroom sink and you might be interested in a lawn mower.

You don't have the funds to buy that lawn mower to go along with your bathroom sink?
Just step over hear and sign up for our credit card and we will give you XXX months no interest.
I just seen an ad for a Tim Horton's credit card!!!!

Put the box of donuts on layaway. It's not like they're going to get that much staler than they already are.

There are definite advantages to Kijiji & Marketplace
It is much easier to lie to potential buyers in text than to their face.

I've never had a problem buying or selling on Kijiji or FB Marketplace. When selling, I always post a detailed ad with good quality pictures. When buying, I don't waste my time with a poor quality ad or weak pictures. I've found amazing deals on gear and bikes through both, as well as giving away amazing deals on gear and bikes. Everyone I've ever dealt with has seemed reasonably normal too.

I do, if I get that gut feeling. I've won more than once doing so.

Kijiji ad in Guelph. "Mountain bike. New Brooks seat. $140". Small grainy pic. Looked at it with my magnifying glass and squinted. I couldn't read it, but recognize the slanted font. Phoned. It was his GF's bike and she bought a new one. I'll be there in 30 minutes.

Brodie Bikes' top of the line Tange Prestige frame, Shimano LX/XT mix. Mavic rims, Panaracer Fire XC tires, Avid brakes, Salsa cockpit parts. MSRP would have been around $1,100. The best retail price around for a Brooks B-17 seat at the time was $189 + tax. $73 more than I just paid for a new one with a high end production framed bike attached to it.

I've sold plenty on Kijiji. Kijijidiots inquire every single time without fail; it just comes with the territory. You just heave to learn how to discern true buyers from the rest. They ask more details questions and are genuinely interested in the condition of the item before making plans to meet.

I've also learned that the large percentage of kijiji browsers are mentally jerking off when surfing kijiji; hence the abundance of "is it still available" queries even if the ad specifically states that it is and not to ask. They get post-nut clarity once you respond back.

My personal fav is when I'll post something at 10am and I get someone asking if it's still available at 10:01am. Kijijidiot!

Marketplace is the WORST for "is this available?" responses to go un-answered. Couple of people told me they hit it by mistake. I have noticed the view count on marketplace is almost 10x as high as kijiji on the hot tubs I sell. Kijiji views have been pretty dead the last couple years and %90 of my sales are through marketplace.

Had a great kijiji experience this morning. Bought a 2023 yamaha bws125 scooter (for what I don't know, lol) Posted for $3700. I asked what his best price would be over email - $3300 he tells me. I thought great, that is well below market value. Went to view, literally brand new, never seen rain, says he bought as a retirement present to himself. He offered me a few times to throw a helmet on and take it for a spin. I agree, ask him do you want a deposit? nah...want to hold my truck keys? Nah... I went down the street and back quick knowing it was as new. He showed me his bill, bank draft copy from when he paid $6700 in April for it o_O 🤯 Now needed money to fix his roof/chimney. Also said was posted on Autotrader for 4100 and had a couple people lined up to see it.

Asked if he can get any closer to 3000.....$3100? Said I have to pay for safety and stuff. He happily agrees. Counted out 3000, then went to hand him the extra 100 and he says, go ahead and keep it to use for the safety and what not. Offered me his almost new helmet as well when loading it up. Great case of money talks/being the first to make the trip to see it paid off. So many times I have found fixed/lower income people to be the most generous, for tips as well at the end of a job.

I dunno I wouldn’t necessarily fall into that category.

I take the post at its word unless the pictures are sketchy.

“Still selling? Where are you located? Will you take $x picked up? Where do you want to meet?”

Done.
