Selling on kijiji....

Sucks...so many low ballers and people who don't respond...had a guy interested in my bike supposedly from Muskoka...we emailed back and forth, agreed on a price and that I would get it certified...I asked for a deposit in good faith to show his seriousness, and he responds saying that's an unreasonable request and he retracts his offer...WTH?

Was I being unreasonable or is he being a you know what?

P.S...listed for $6,199...agreed on $6,000...asked for $200 deposit

I've met some real jerks and some really cool people through selling on Kijiji. Bikes, parts and gear.

Personally, I would go ahead and safety it as it makes it easier to sell, and I wouldn't ask for a deposit - I'd just sell to the first person that meets my target selling price.

Last bike I sold was a TU250X. Lots of lowball offers in the GTA and some ridiculously rude messages in the process. A reasonable offer from a very polite, well-mannered individual in Montreal - new rider, first bike - he really wanted the bike. He wanted to take the train over and ride back, but then registration and licensing is an issue - and I was concerned for his safety as a new rider tbh. Ended up loading it in the cargo van we had at the time and making a weekend trip to Montreal out of it, dropping it off at his door. We agreed on a "delivery fee". Didn't ask for a deposit as we got good vibes just from talking to the guy. Worst case, we enjoy a weekend in Montreal and bike goes back with us. We're still in touch - he even visited us while passing through Edmonton late last year.

I just remembered... When we arrived at his place, he had prepped little snack packs for my wife and I for the drive back, fresh fruit, granola bars, crackers, juice, water etc... Shows you the kind of person he is. Don't get discouraged - there's some good people out there browsing on Kijiji as well! :)

I’m met some truly OK people , and some truly jerks .
Don’t take any of it personally, it’s just a transaction and if someone is being a bit too demanding, move on to the next fish.

The problem is trust. Sellers do not trust buyers. Buyers do not trust sellers. Also, people love to kick tires. They will ask "Is this bike still available?" just to be told yes or no, then moves on to the next ad lol. It could be a long or short process selling a car or bike. Good luck!

Nope you are doing it right. I never do the safety until paid as it expires and becomes useless.

I've used Kijiji once or twice a year over last 10+ years. It's 50 / 50 as to respondents. Lots of fools and lots of decent people. I never give my address until I have a cell number and we've exchanged a text or two.

More lately, I've pulled back from selling things as I don't want people to come to my house, in particular if what I'm selling is in the garage. Why give a prospective thief a preview of your bike, your tools, what the locks look like, the brand of your garage opener etc.....

I'm with SS, I wouldnt do a safety unless I had money from the buyer. They can disappear and leave me with a useless piece of paper that I had to pay for. $200 deposit seems low to me tbh. I wouldnt be surprised if someone wanted 500 or 1000 to have it safeties and ready for me.

I sold a sailboat and the guy wanted it delivered. I can't remember what I asked for deposit. At least $500. Transaction was smooth.

I was curious what an mt07/fz07 was "going for", and I use that term loosely on kijiji. $6 grand for an 8 year old bike?

Some are dreamers asking far more.

Inflation.

Supply and demand.

Whatever you want to attribute it to...

Msrp is $9999.00

Likely get a bit off at the end of the season.

If I was in the market for one, I'd be considering a brand new one, with a warranty.

I rode a 2017. Fun bike. Usable power for the street. Needs suspension work.

Kijiji can get frustrating. I've had good interactions, and bad. Having an agreed upon price, and then some d-bag buyer trying to lowball when I'm dropping the bike off at his house. He even agreed it was in "way better shape than he thought from the pictures"... that one ****** me off.

Recently bought a b&b tail rack for my wr250r, shipped from a guy in Calgary. Good transaction. Part was 1/3 of retail. Minimal wear.

There's decent people out there, and also alot of jack-wads.

@ifiddles
Keep trying. If it doesn't sell, lower the price a bit. How much $ is your time and sanity worth?

Here's how that works without the deposit.

You've agreed to the $6000 and taken the bike off the market.

He shows up and finds an excuse to to renege on the offer, the tires aren't as round as I thought they'd be. My wife must have found my stash and taken a few hundred. Whatever. I've only got $5600? Pretty please?

Now you either start the merry go round again or get stuck with the loss.

With a deposit you say "Gee too bad about you being short the few hundred. There's a bank down the street that will give it to you on your credit card. I'll hold the bike until ________ for you to get back to me." "Can't do it? Gee I'm sorry, my hubby spent the deposit."

All these idiots make it easier for me to buy stuff. I make a phone call and actually speak to the guy, then I show up as promised with either my trailer or a good deposit. THEN I make an offer and remind him that if he accepts my offer he's done with all kijiji BS. That last bit really hits home with most sellers.

And yeah never cert till it's sold.

A mechanic friend will look at the bike and advise of any safety snags so I don't get caught promising anything I can't reasonably afford to fix. When the sale is in hand he does the official safety. I forget what the forms cost him but they aren't cheap.

Unless you price your bike low it could take a while to sell so being too far ahead on paper is money out of your pocket.

I was helping a friend sell her Royal Enfield. Within hours of listing the bike (for way under market value) a guy shows up to look at it. He's dressed and hair done like a bollywood actor with a gucci endorsement. I'm in my flip flops and painting shorts.

He seems nice enough at first, but you hear him say things like "the tires are in great shape" (rear was balder than Homer), "I ride a bigger bike" (almost drops the 500cc Enfield), "I really want the bike" (proceeds to offer 30% under asking). I tell him he can leave.

We negotiate to 15% under asking, safetied, but (despite a 2" thick wallet), he only has $5 so he can't leave me a deposit :ROFLMAO:

I say we can do that deal when he comes back with cash, it's first come, first serve, until then. He says he'll be back in the evening after work.

An hour or so later, someone else reaches out with a much richer offer, as-is, and offers to leave an e-transfer sight unseen and come get the bike right away. Again, this bike was way under market, and if I was a Royal Enfield fan I would have bought it for myself.

Sure enough, the serious buyer shows up within an hour with a truck, a trailer, a friend (or employee?) to help him load. Unlike the first guy, this dude (also Indian) wasn't wearing any labels, but you could just tell from the way he carried himself, how he showed respect for both your time and his own, and how he treated you, that he was both the real money, and just an overall good, quality human being. The guy he brought with him was equally kind and respectful and I'd hang out with those guys any day.

As for the first guy... When I told him the bike was sold, he offered me asking price! Dude, if it was worth asking price to you, you should have offered it.

I have a screenshot somewhere. I'll attach it if I find it.

The six grand is a large drop from the seven asking price.

Games usually on both sides.

never ridden a RE, but would like to...gotta see what all the hype is about

As a rule I rule out everything from the motherland (especially the women), maybe RE are nice?

On a side note,
I went to OVC for the photo tag game, the name certainly fit the owner, he was old and cranky.

Maybe the confusing lies with the "Deposit". What is the agreement on Deposit between the seller and the buyer?
People low balling, not showing up, not wanting to pay the agreed price, etc. is nothing new on Kijiji. Both parties are coming from the totally opposite point. What one considers reasonable/fair might not be to the other. Would you deposit $200 to meet someone at a gas station?

99% of the time is a waste of time when dealing with people on Kijiji
Sadly, you are forced to do this to get to the 1% that actually have an interest and money and are reasonable.

I list on both Marketplace and Kijiji.
I always add 50% to the price on Marketplace over what the price is on Kijiji.
If anybody low-balls the price to 50% then I respond yes but never respond to where the bike is.
I never tell people where they can view until I have had 3 intelligent responses.
If in doubt I will meet at somewhere other than my home.
I respond to offers to trade by telling the I will gladly trade for $20.00 $50.00 and $100.00 dollar bills.
Piss me off and I will send you down a dead end muddy road in search of an address.
I have been known to out a****ole the best if they annoy me.
If my asking price includes extras such as parts and manuals I do not list this in the add.
Low-ball me and the extras go into the garbage.
I have trashed whole bikes rather than sell at a ridiculous low price.
There is advantages to being old and grumpy.
