Scarey things

Opening a door to the outside in the dark ....Gmork scared me...anything that growls that I can't see,View attachment 56870 waving grass in Ghost and the Darkness.
Even my own back yard here in Aus which is somewhat organized rain forest gives me pause.
Reminds me of a remote service call north of Milton. It was at night and I could hear the coyote or wolves howling. Then I had to go to the van, parked in the dark, for a tool.

My last remote site we had a nurse station off the main camp.

Everyone was trying to radio to the nurse to NOT go outside. She didn’t have the radio on her only to open the door and be confronted by a mama bear and 3 cubs.

She was lucky to have seen her before the bear turned and charged.

Had to drive a truck right to the door as the bear wasn’t scared at all.

There's a pack of 6 or 7 (as far as I can tell from the yelps when they're killing something @ 3am) in the ravine across the street from me. They keep to themselves and you rarely see them. Occasionally I'll see 1 or 2 when they come up into the park. I have the dog with me when I'm out there. They see her and disappear back into the bush (discretion>valour).

True / False?

One or two will lure a dog into a secluded spot to play and then the rest of the pack attacks.

Same. Below a certain size there is no effect. Also, deep water

I know a few people weirded out by deep water . Sometimes out in Lake Ontario on a stinky hot day we go overboard for a swim. It’s 60-90 ft deep and people will not get out of the boat.
Once it’s over your head I don’t get 2ft vs 100 , you can’t touch, but it’s not my phobia.

Been there done that. No wind so tether and swim. It spooks me but six feet or one hundred and six has the same outcome.

Lake Ontario is cold but at a certain distance off shore you get the current from Lake Erie and it's warmer.

An old coworker long ago did his open water quality dive on a wreck reasonably deep in lake Ontario. No pressure gauges at that time. When you air runs out, pull the rod on the J valve and you have a few minutes to get up. Hang out at around 15' until tank is empty and then surface blowing out. Sketchy as.

It's not the depth I fear, it's the Mermaids.

Lake Ontario Mermaids ? Scare the crap outta me also .

I did my open water dive test at Tobermory then upgrades for mixed gas and ice near Kingston , we had pressure gauges and also J valves but the J was on its way out . I still wear a conventional watch even though that makes me a dinosaur. I’ve seen batteries go dead.

I trust batteries but always dive with at least two independent timers. Far too many people trust a dive computer with their life.

I had a dog like that. He was 130 lbs of Shepard/Mastiff cross GOOFY pup.
I brought him home to a house with two well established cats... he quickly found his place. He was NOT happy with the situation.
Twas FUNNY
I'd rather fight a 50 pound dog than a 10 pound cat.

I used to be scared of spiders until one holiday in Costa Rica when I thought it would be a good idea to see what’s in the tropical garden at night. Flip flops on, headlight equipped, camera and flash and off we go and then I learned something..spiders eyes reflect the headlight back at you at night. Once I finished crapping myself I realized there’s no use being that scared of a bajillion of the little bastards that were also there during the day but I couldn’t see them and they didn’t bite me for zero reason it was fine. Now every holiday I go out looking to see what I can find.

Edit: Trigger warning….spider pics!

wait until you take a blacklight out and find scorpions!

The bigger the reflection at night the bigger the spider. That’s why it’s so easy to find the tarantulas and bird eating ones in the pics above. Also as you get near you can see them scurry away (lights go) so that’s reassuring too.

Usually where I go there’s a ton of banana trees and at night there’s tons of quite venomous things crawling up the trunks. I’m no expert but I think the ones a I’ve seen were the recluse types.

Then there’s this….taken in Ontario, in my garden. Guess what I think this is…

Add another thing to my list. Heat exhaustion. (Or almost there). Just got back from a 2 day trial up in Parry Sound. The heat, humidity and being out of shape scared the crap out of me. After the 6th section on day one i found myself gasping for air. Scared the crap out of me. Couldn't catch my breath. Oh no. Am i going to be the one with the hospital trip?
My daughter was with me and helped me a lot. Drank 3 liters of water on the 2 laps and it was only 1.5km per lap.
Picture is from the start of the trial art 11:00am.

Wife had her air run out surfacing in Galapagos. Guide seemed more interested in taking pictures to sell to us. He'd checked her gauge and put her on his supply for a while, then back on her own. She was only 10' from the surface at the time, but it's kind of hard to tell at the time. Bcd doesn't work too well with no air, and the person filling the tanks didn't like it either. We did see a dozen sharks at the time, so there might have been some rapid breathing.

My wife died 4 months ago. A female aquiantance asked me to go out with her today. She is a really nice person and wanted company at a local concert.
I was terrified, but couldn't say no. What would she think of me if i turned her down? What if... What if.
We had a great time. Turned a corner tonite. No, i didn't get "lucky".

What are your greatest fears?
Congrats Ric, can't be easy treading new waters.
